W3C tech mentioned on the web: "What is CSS, and why is it important?"

"CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It is the coding language that gives a website its look and layout. Along with HTML, CSS is fundamental to web design. Without it, websites would still be plain text on white backgrounds.

Before the development of CSS in 1996 by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Web pages were extremely limited in both form and function."

Als Antwort auf World Wide Web Consortium

we used to have to jump through hoops to get colors and shapes right, and use JavaScript (had to be supported in your browser because that's where it ran) to get behaviors: it was a mess. And when one part or another was not properly supported it was really horribly ugly. CSS does not require any remote code execution in the browser ( JavaScript is irrelevant), and when one part or another is not quite supported in the standard that expected way it degrades in a way that is useful rather than horrible. I can't say that I love it, I like it a lot better than the alternatives!
