why does @threadsrelay@sekretaerbaer.de exist? for instances that want to federate with #threads, this account is completely useless, as threads will eventually find the instance. for instances that don't want to federate with threads, needing to do more than blocking federation with threads.net seems weird.

@Workload (The unnamed one) a look at @Threads Relay profile would answer your question :

his is a private channel relay on the topic "Threads and the Fediverse".

Channel relays are automated accounts (bot accounts) within Friendica that share/boost content based on rules, such as hashtags used, keywords in the message, media or other rules.

Posts with the hashtags fedipact, meta, threads from the public posts of the Fediverse / ActivityPub network are automatically shared/boosted by this relay/bot

Channel relays are automated accounts (bot accounts), within Friendica, that share content based on content-related rules, such as hashtags used, keywords in the message, media or other rules.

The sharing is private, so only accounts that follow the relay/bot can see the shares/boosts.

This relay/bot is inside the Fediverse / ActivityPub network and not outside of it. The posts are also only shared/boosted in Fediverse / ActivityPub network.
This relay/bot is not a bridge to another network (such as Bluesky) and does not share posts to other networks.

that answers what it does. that doesn't answer why it does it/why it exists.

i could easily make a bot that just boosts the entire arson.wtf global feed, but why? what is the point?

@Workload (The unnamed one) the point is that this account/relay collects all posts with the mentioned hashtags as described and makes them accessible by boosting users who follow the relay in one place.
Als Antwort auf OldKid ⁂

so basically just the equivalent of going to the #threads hashtag on a well-connected instance im using arson.wtf as an example - for a more well-connected one, go to a bigger instance and find their #threads tag tracker, or having your instance add the #fedibuzz relay to their relays with a #threads hashtag in the parameters - i see no point in there being a dedicated opt-out (even if i use the #threads hashtag, that does not imply i'm opting in; it's not like a more specific #threadsrelay or #iwanttooptintousingthethreadsrelay hashtag) bot for doing this.

@Workload (The unnamed one) the difference to fedibuzz is that you can search for more than one hashtag with a realy. You can refine the search by saying, for example, that you only want posts with pictures or in a certain language.

@OldKid You should not use the term "relay" in the name. Many people seem to confuse this with a bridge.

This could prevent such misunderstandings.

@Threads Relay @Expo

Als Antwort auf Hamiller Friendica

@Hamiller Friendica at the beginning i also thought i would give the account a different name, but then decided on Realy because it describes exactly what this account does.
Als Antwort auf OldKid ⁂

this is a relay. your bot "relay" account is not one. i did not add your domain to my instance's relays list, hence it is not a proper relay, as is the widely accepted term amongst people i've talked to.

Als Antwort auf Workload (The unnamed one)

@Workload (The unnamed one) It works in exactly the same way as a relay. You only see the posts it boosts when you follow it. You are only aware of the existence of the relay because it has boosted your own post. This is one of the differences to other relays within the Fediverse. If they boost a post of theirs then they are not notified.
And it is a relay that normal users can also use and not just the admins of the instances
Als Antwort auf OldKid ⁂

ok so my main issue is really that it is opt-out, rather than opt-in. a relay requires all participating instances' administrators to opt-in, whereas your bot just takes any posts it sees with a hashtag on any instance, opted in or not, and boosts them.

@Workload (The unnamed one) yes that's true but only public posts that every other Fediverse user can see and boost. So he is like every other user within the Fediverse.
and as it says in the profile
...If you do not want your posts to be shared please send us a message to @Oldkids Relays from Oldkid and we will block your account from further sharing.
Als Antwort auf OldKid ⁂

we're already waiting on that lol

So he is like every other user within the Fediverse

except the bot is automated and not a human interaction (yes ik #nobot exists, however sometimes some people want to allow specific bot interactions, without implying bots should be allowed to interact by default)

@Workload (The unnamed one) so posts from the instance arson.wtf was excluded from boosting.

btw fedi.buzz also has no opt-in and any user can follow a hashtag relay from fedi.buzz.
enter @#test in your search

Als Antwort auf OldKid ⁂

thought they only federated with instances that had fedi.buzz in their relays list? am i missing something?

currently encountering this when tryna check that test user

Sorry, I’m not a technical person but it seems you’ve asked a great question. I hate threads/zuck as much as anyone and don’t want them near me here. Should I block the threads relay account? Unfortunately my instance reversed positions and now federates 😡
Als Antwort auf DB

@DB The relay has no connection with Meta. It only boosts public posts from the Fediverse and makes them accessible to users who follow the relay.
But of course they can block the account if they want to
