Elaboration on my don't care vote: I think it's totally fine, and that a lot of people are offended too easily on behalf of others, an opinion that solidified largely as a result of people trying to explain to me why it wasn't okay that _I_ wasn't offended by something that they perceived as derogatory towards _me_.
(additional context: the word 'gimp' also refers to a type of plasticky thread, which is where I first heard it. That is, _as an art supply_. So when I heard about GIMP the program, it sounded like a good name to me.
also, lol
> Interestingly, when I searched Wikipedia for GIMP, I came across an entry for the GIMP Project, which is a modern dance project in New York that includes disabled people. I guess gimp isn’t considered a derogatory term by everyone.
so, yeah.
The insistence on universalizing personal feelings of offense into the assertion that the term in itself is _offensive_ is such a harmful attitude IMO that it actually pushes me from ambivalence towards being positive towards GIMP as a name.)
that is an interesting extra data point or two, and an interesting conclusion; I can +1 the calling that insistence harmful but still voted don’t care either way.
It's not the insistence on the _name_ itself I view as harmful, it's the underlying philosophy, and the closed-mindedness. It's the "you're a _bad person_ if you think this is acceptable" attitude.
"I'm offended on behalf of other people with whom I have not consulted, and thus _you_ need to _change_."
Every time I've had a confrontation with a "neoliberal" it felt like arguing with a "far right" individual. Closed mindedness is closed mindedness, no matter what views you have.

Als Antwort auf pixx • • •That's the "white neoliberal with more time than sense" kind of attitude I alluded to before.
Not that I'm accusing anyone here of that. It just kinda whiffs of it in general.
But I can respect someone wanting the name to not have negative associations/connotations for noble reasons.
