#AboutW3C

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web Consortium, founded by Web inventor @timbl 🎊

We made a 2:27 video using graphic elements and text running on a timeline from 1989 to 2024 to highlight milestones for #W3C and the Internet.

happy 30th anniversary! Cool video but I don't understand one thing: what do you mean by number of users? For instance, in 1997 it says 3 million users, but by then the internet already had 10x more than that - is it the number of w3.org visitors?

@trobador according to our research, in 1997 only a little over 2% of the world population was online.

@timbl

in 1997 there were ~5.8 billion humans, 2% would then be 116 million users 😀
Just in the US "56.7 million Americans 3 years and above (22.2 percent) used the Internet in 1997"

At 0:57: “unique indentifiers”. Did @timbl spelling striked again? (Regarding mastodon.social/@tef/113210823…) Happy birthday anyway! 🎂

hearing that tim berners-lee has joined mastodon, so i'd like to repost my only interaction with him

(from a Reddit AMA over a decade ago)

This is just bad. Mosaic was the first browser? Y2K bug "didn't happen"? HTML invented in 1995? This isn't ancient history, you can ask the people who were around then

What a story! Vastly important work that the world relies upon and mostly doesn’t know about. A deep bow of gratitude to all who participated, with extra kudos for the W3C Team! Love to all of you.
