My son-in-law uses the "holzhausen" method of stacking firewood. Holzhausen means "wood house," referring to the house-like shape of the wood pile. See firewood-for-life.com/holz-hau….

I prefer the traditional 4 by 4-ft linear woodpile (last photo) because it's easier to keep track of how much wood you have, as one cord is 4 by 4 by 8 feet. But the holzhausen is great if space is limited.

The word means "dwelling place". In a church, it is the fixed, secure box that houses the Eucharist outside of Mass.

When visiting Mount Martha a few months ago I took a morning walk with some friends along the Balcombe Estuary Boardwalk Circuit. It's an absolutely gorgeous walk. The place is beautiful, and the thick trees provide a nice shade that allows the sunlight to filter through in a very satisfying way.

I'm dropping this in as a #shittember entry. In my eyes, the focus isn't really great on the image and I can't get the lighting dynamics quite right. I like the image but posting this one makes me a bit uncomfortable, and (at least to me) #shittember is somewhat about easing up on yourself, freeing yourself of those performance criteria, and just doing it anyway, so here it is.

Spontaneously, we took a photo walk in the woods to complete our homework 😎 We strolled along the paths, and it was fantastic what we were able to discover when focusing our attention on the little things, the small scenes, and shifting perspective to just above the ground. Once again, an inspiring and almost meditative experience.

One more of the stunning Welcome Swallow from today's adventure, because I think it's too good not to share.

I visited the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens for the first time today, and the grounds were stunning. While I was there I was lucky enough to have a Welcome Swallow pose for me on a branch overhanging a body of water. I don't recall ever having seen one before - perhaps because they're so small and speedy. They're very beautiful birds, and there were quite a few of them flitting about at the gardens here today. I hope to see more of them.

Another walk on the Yarra River Trail today brings some fluffy new family members to the area. Here we have some Australian Wood Ducklings foraging through the grassy riverbank, with (I believe, based on the feathering) mumma in the background.

Passers by were happily observing and quietly snapping shots of the family of at least 8 ducklings plus the two parents. Aside from a small Mynah close by that was flying about and being a bit of a nuisance, the ducks and ducklings where largely unbothered by their celebrity status and were much more interested in what they could find on the ground.

"almost all of our modern towns and cities are formed out of materials that have been extracted, smelted, superheated or synthesised through the intensive use of fossil energy. Cities are, literally, monuments to extraction and emissions, the focused expressions of mining, burning, melting, sintering and moulding the mineral contents of the Earth"
