#Transport for #London has doubled the area of #wildflower verges across its network to 520,000 square metres in two years, equivalent to around 72 football pitches. The expansion forms part of efforts to boost biodiversity and improve climate resilience across the capital.

New sites have been created in Enfield, Bexley and Sutton, while existing verges in areas including Redbridge and Hillingdon continue to provide habitats for wildlife and accessible green spaces for residents.

TfL’s approach, introduced through pilot schemes in 2019, involves reducing mowing and removing grass cuttings to encourage wildflower growth. The verges provide food and shelter for insects, birds and small mammals, while also helping to store carbon and reduce emissions from maintenance work.

Surveys carried out with Butterfly Conservation recorded around 720 butterflies from 22 species in 2025, with average sightings rising by more than 50 per cent compared with the previous year.

Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum hircinum) at Berrow, Somerset. This species is on the edge of its range here in Britain, but appears to be expanding its range, potentially in response to climate change. This one was growing on a sand dune near a golf course and was around 30-40cm high, but they sometimes also grow on road verges, and can reach heights of 90cm.

Burnt-tip Orchid (Neotinea ustulata) at Clattinger Farm, Wiltshire. Burnt-tip is now rare in Britain. It formerly grew around Bath - in 1834 botanist Charles Babington (who referred to it as 'Dwarf Dark-winged Orchis) includes records from Claverton Down and Wick. The last record for it in Bath was 1913.

Fly Orchid (Ophrys insectifera) at Morgan's Hill, Wiltshire. The flowers are usually pollinated by two species of solitary wasps (Argogorytes mystaceus and A. fargeii). The scent of the flower is similar to female wasp pheromones, and the male wasps attempt to mate with the flowers, causing the pollinia (sticky masses of pollen) to become stuck to the wasps, and transferred to the next flower.

1 of the joys of keeping a Perpetual Journal is seeing what happened this week in previous years. Here’s my PJ art of Tucson nature observations 1, 2 & 3 years ago this week. In ‘23 we got snow. In ‘26 the temp’s been over 90°!

Our Barrel Cacti have stopped blooming for the season & are now topped by yellow fruits (and yes, we’ve seen a 😍Bobcat recently, but just walking through our yard not lounging as I drew in 2023 for this Perpetual Journal page).

This is a native white vervain (Verbena urticifolia seems likely) volunteer that popped up in my still-developing native #wildflower garden. So similar to the other native vervains but the inflorescences are so delightfully wispy!

The stem of Brown Sedge (Carex disticha). Even those parts of a plant which may seem plain and ordinary can be extraordinary, In this case a cross section of the stem of this common sedge reveals the letter D running through it.
