A group of white, translucent mushrooms on a brown shrub stem, probably salmonberry. The mushrooms, most of which are seen bottom side up, have a round, umbrella-shaped (or parachute-shaped) cap, with widely-spaced gills, showing up as whiter lines on the white flesh of the cap. The stalks are thin, white, and about as long as the diameter of the caps. Background; a crumbly log, bright green, wet moss. Crossing the salmonberry stem, there's a piece of fern frond, dead, wet, brown.

The fairies have landed!

Context for new followers: I took this photo in September during the salmon run on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This bear was keeping an eye on salmon going up a stream, hoping to catch a few of them. As you can judge from its body shape, it is very successful. 😁

On a recent photo tour, we had a surprise visit from a sea otter that decided to get its dinner in front of our cameras in a sheltered cove. It grabbed several crabs and clams and used tools to open the clams. We could hear it crush the shells with its teeth.

I plan to go back there as soon as I can.

A hermit crab in the palm of my hand; a little over the width of one finger. He's in a bluish shell, opening upward; he's holding both chelipeds in the opening and there's also one leg visible, up against the edge. The rest is hidden. GrainyHand hermits choose shells into which they can retreat completely, showing no sign of occupancy, so this one is already feeling more confident. The chelipeds are brown, with closely-packed pale blue raised dots. On the outside of the shell, on the left, there's a limpet.

Belted kingfishers are notoriously difficult to photograph. We were lucky enough to witness three of them chasing each other in circles. They were very vocal during their acrobatics.
I interpreted that behaviour as two young kingfishers harassing their parent for food. They were at that stage when they have fledged and are learning to forage for themselves.

Text of the sign: The Elk River Valley provides a good variety of habitats for the Roosevelt elk. Clearings such as the river flats and hydro lines are rich in the small trees, shrubs, ferns and grasses that make up the majority of their diet. The nearby forest provides shelter from predators and severe winter storms. The resident elk herd is made up mostly of females, yearlings and calves. The adult males come down from their summer range in the high mountain passes in time for the fall rut. Look For These Elk Signs: 1. Tracks and scat (droppings) are clear evidence that elk have been here. 2. Many shrubs growing here have signs of elk browse. They appear misshapen, with many short branches.
