🧼🧪 Researchers found that #fatbergs form when calcium in sewer #water reacts with fatty acids to create a process called saponification.

This is gadgetbahn gold by @philip

In the 1950s, the Victorian government was seriously considering a 40-seat helicopter bus service from the roof of Southern Cross Station to Moorabbin and Essendon Airports: youtube.com/watch?v=O9Ybkpk3Ka…

It also predicted that, by 2003, helipads would be built all over Melbourne for the thousands of people commuting by helicopter bus each day.

Needless to say, it never happened.

This reminded me of a caravan park I spent my high school years cycling past (The Glade in Bunbury W.A.) which I'm duly surprised to look up just now and see that it still exists.

But this does lead me to wonder what the history of caravan parks was like for Melbourne: how many there had been, when they (mostly) vanished and how urban planners and governments treated their demise.

Sounds like something to ask @philip to cover sometime.

Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?

We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.

Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at calbike.org/events/webinar-ser… or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.

If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2…

@yy on why urban grocery stores should prioritize bike parking over car parking:

- You don't need a car for groceries
- Grocery access is an equity issue
- Car parking is expensive and subsidizes the rich
- We can have 10 more customers park per spot
- Induced demand works both ways
- Spillover benefits
- Built for the future

🌿💡 Researchers at South #China Agricultural University are using phosphor particles to turn #succulents into natural light sources.

These #plants absorb sunlight and emit a visible glow for several hours after dark. The #technology could eventually reduce #energy needs by providing light for city streets and #gardens.

In the urbanist discourse, there's rightly a lot of discussion about barrier-protected bike lanes. But I think there should be more advocacy for dedicated bus lanes as well.

FOR THE BIRDS

🐦‍⬛ Non-native trees are commonly used in urban settings, but a new study out of Sweden finds that native trees provide more resources and are preferred by urban birds.

🐛 Another study out of the University of Glasgow shows that common woodland birds produce more chicks when surrounded by a greater abundance of native tree foliage.

One more quick byproduct of my MDEM development: a bivariate map integrating volumetric structural data (SAR) with surface temperature (LST). This approach identifies the exceptionally intensive dissipative role of volumetric vegetation structure (trees and tall shrubs). By accounting for these high-performance cooling elements, we can better understand how they supplement traditional landscaping to enhance the city's overall thermal resilience.

Good timing for NACTO (an association of North American #cities and #transit agencies formed to exchange #transportation ideas, insights, and practices and cooperatively approach national transportation issues) to have its 2026 Designing Cities conference in #Minneapolis, May 12-15. events.bizzabo.com/designingci…

"For anyone outside of #Minnesota who wants to help, the best thing you can do is #vacation in the #TwinCities or hold your next #convention here.”

"On the outskirts of #Copenhagen, one municipality is adjusting its streetlighting system in a way that departs from decades of urban convention. The solution looks minor. But the reasons behind the shift reflect a broader convergence of #biodiversity policy, #climate targets and #infrastructure design."

I've made use of the new 10-minute service on the Sunbury line to visit St Albans.

This is one of the few outer suburban areas to have a traditional shopping strip (likely the result of a pre-existing town captured by Melbourne's expansion).

Traditional commerical strips with separate small landholdings are critical for independence and innovation.

Most post-war suburban areas only have consolidated single owner/manager commercial centres that prefer low-risk chain retail and hospitality.

It's why pre-war development areas tend to be fun and interesting, while post-war development areas tend to be bland and boring.

I must come back to see if the local IGA supermarket has a deli.

Denmark is painting the town red—for the bats. In a world-first initiative, the municipality of Gladsaxe has switched to red LED streetlights along key roadways to protect local nocturnal wildlife, particularly bat species sensitive to artificial light.
The core scientific insight is that traditional white and blue light spectrums disrupt bats' echolocation and feeding patterns. Red light, however, offers a safe, sustainable alternative that maintains public safety while preserving the local ecosystem.
This isn't just a quirky experiment; it's a smart blueprint for eco-conscious urban planning. The shift reduces light pollution and energy consumption, demonstrating how city infrastructure can meet global sustainability goals (like the UN SDGs) and successfully coexist with nature.

I'm in Newbury for the week without my car and frankly it's so much better. I'm 5 minutes walk from the railway station, 10 minutes from the town centre shops and I don't have to think about parking at all. The Car Club means if I do need a car, I pay for it for the duration I need it for.

This is what 15 minute cities are all about, not some stupid conspiracy.

To prioritize sidewalk funding, it's useful to know where there's pedestrian demand. Walk Potential calculates this by analyzing how many of 20 different categories of amenities are within a 10-minute walk.

I'm in the process of releasing Walk Potential as a plugin for the QGIS, a free desktop QGIS app. This will make it easier for people to try it out and use.

Back in Bradford for a site visit after a day fiddling with wires at the National Railway Museum.

Having been involved in the last big shake up of Bradford City Centre to create City Park in 2010/2011, it's brilliant to see even fewer cars and even more planting.

The curse of creeping deterioration.

Imagine if your candidate for mayor came up with the plan of turning a green, cool, climate-resilient city centre with good air quality into a gigantic, hot, stinking car park within a very short space of time. Promising to significantly raise the number of traffic fatalities and environmental death rates among the old and the poor and worsen the living conditions for all inhabitants.
