#Review: Spider-Man: Brand New Day – A #Hero for the #Surveillance State?

At first, #Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks like another emotional #superhero #story. Peter Parker has lost everything. No one remembers him, not even MJ. He searches for his #identity while trying to protect #NewYork. The #film spends much of its time on #trauma, #loneliness, and #mental #health.

But behind this personal story lies a political #message. The film presents mass surveillance as something necessary and even heroic. This is where the #movie becomes much more interesting—and much more troubling.

Spider-Man uses powerful surveillance #technology to watch the city. He collects video from many security cameras. He scans every face to find criminals. Even the #police admit that this is probably #illegal. Still, the film treats these actions as acceptable because Spider-Man is one of the "good guys."

Jean Grey—now portrayed by Sadie Sink (She kept her role a huge secret beforehand for marketing reasons.) in the Marvel Universe—falls into the facial recognition trap set by Spider-Man's surveillance program. If, by the end, you feel sorry for Jean Grey because the script wants you to and you’ve let yourself be swept up in the drama, then please remember that at the beginning of the movie, Jean possessed an old man and sent him running into the street so he would be brutally run over. She’s a mass murderer who’ll stop at nothing to achieve her goal. She could easily achieve this goal with her incredible superpower, but she makes it unnecessarily complicated by first freeing the Scorpion, which is what draws Spider-Man's attention to her in the first place.

This idea has a long #history in popular culture. The strongest comparison is George Orwell's 1984. #Orwell imagined a #society where every citizen is watched. Surveillance is presented as a tool for #security, but it destroys #freedom. In Brand New Day, the situation is different because Spider-Man is a hero, not a dictator. Yet the basic question remains the same: Who watches the watchers? If one person can see everyone, who controls that person?

The film never really asks this #question. Instead, it assumes that surveillance is good as long as the right people #control it. This is one of its biggest #weaknesses.

Another interesting comparison is The Dark Knight. In Christopher Nolan's film, #Batman creates a machine that can monitor every mobile phone in Gotham. Lucius Fox calls it too dangerous because it gives one person unlimited power. Batman agrees. He uses the system only once to catch the #Joker and then destroys it immediately.

Brand New Day takes a very different approach. Spider-Man's surveillance technology is not treated as a #moral #problem. Instead, it becomes a normal #tool of #crime fighting. The ethical debate that makes The Dark Knight so powerful is almost completely missing.

The transcript also compares Spider-Man's work with modern surveillance technology. Peter Parker works closely with the Department of Damage Control and helps collect huge amounts of personal data. The review argues that this creates a positive image of a close relationship between #government institutions and powerful technology companies.

This makes the film feel surprisingly modern. Today, governments and private companies collect enormous amounts of digital information. Cameras, facial recognition, smartphones and artificial #intelligence make surveillance easier than ever before. The movie reflects this reality but rarely questions it.

One of the most interesting contradictions is #PeterParker himself. He wants #privacy for his own life. He hides his identity and wants to escape public attention. At the same time, he watches everyone else and scans thousands of faces. The film never fully explores this contradiction.

This creates an uncomfortable message. Privacy seems important for the hero but less important for ordinary citizens.

The citizens themselves hardly have a voice. They mostly watch, cheer and accept Spider-Man's actions without #discussion. They never decide whether they want to live in such a #society. They simply #trust the hero.

As #entertainment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day offers impressive visuals and emotional performances. However, its political ideas deserve much more attention. The film normalizes mass surveillance while presenting it as an act of kindness and #responsibility. It replaces difficult ethical questions with emotional storytelling.

Unlike 1984, it does not warn us about surveillance. Unlike The #DarkKnight, it does not seriously question its use. Instead, it asks the #audience to trust the hero completely.

That may be the film's most surprising message. The greatest danger is not an #evil government forcing surveillance on its people. The greater danger is that we willingly accept surveillance because it is carried out by someone we like.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day succeeds as an emotional superhero #drama. As a political film, however, it raises fascinating questions without giving convincing answers.

En este articulo queremos explorar el tema de las pluralidades – o yoes plurales, subpersonalidades, partes, o que termino prefieres utilizar. En nuestra cultura occidental domina en lo general la idea o el ideal de un yo único, y tener más que un yo a menudo se cualifica como un trastorno – esquizofrenia o trastorno de identidad disociativo . En otras culturas, la idea de un yo único parece absurdo, y la pluralidad de yoes es lo más “normal”.

James Fadiman y Jordan Gruber escriben: “En los inicios de la psicología, la única controversia real se daba entre dos grupos: uno, formado por científiques y filósofes que consideraban que todo ser humano poseía varios yoes, y otro, compuesto por destacades clíniques —que trabajaban en el desarrollo de las primeras teorías sobre las enfermedades mentales—, que opinaban que los diferentes yoes solo aparecían en su población de pacientes.”

Ich habe gerade gelernt, dass wenn du dich fragst ob du ein Narzisst bist, dann bist du höchstwahrscheinlich keiner. Hast du dich das schon mal gefragt?

Allerdings schützt es dich nicht davor, dass man vielleicht nicht doch ein Arschloch ist.

Bei Führungskräften ist eine geringe Form an Narzissmus angeblich gut. Narzissten wird nachgesagt besser zu verhandeln und mehr rauszuholen. Ausserdem strengen sie sich bei der Arbeit mehr an, weil sie sich darüber definieren und dafür gewundert werden wollen. Ich frage mich allerdings ob dies nicht zeigt wie kaputt unser #System ist? Ein gutes Geschäft ist wenn ein Narzisst den Partner maximal über den Tisch gezogen hat. Man könnte sich auch ein System vorstellen wo beide gleichermaßen von einem Geschäft profitieren. Allerdings widerspricht dies dem #Kapitalismus wo man den Profit maximieren muss, um erfolgreich zu sein.

El impacto de la traición: Cuando la confianza se rompe en el centro del ser

La traición no es simplemente una mentira o un error de cálculo en una relación sino un fenómeno que fractura la base misma de la seguridad emocional de una persona. Cuando alguien en quien depositamos nuestra confianza absoluta decide actuar en beneficio propio pasando por encima de un acuerdo explícito o implícito se produce lo que en psicología se conoce como trauma de traición. Este impacto es profundo porque el cerebro humano está diseñado para buscar refugio en los vínculos cercanos y cuando el refugio se convierte en la fuente del daño la mente entra en un estado de confusión técnica y emocional. La víctima no solo sufre por la pérdida de la persona o la situación sino por la invalidación de su propia percepción de la realidad lo que genera una desorientación que puede durar años.

A nivel emocional la traición activa las mismas áreas del cerebro que el dolor físico provocando una sensación de vacío o presión en el pecho que es real y medible. El daño psicológico se manifiesta principalmente en una hipervigilancia constante donde la persona afectada pierde la capacidad de relajarse incluso en entornos seguros porque su sistema de alerta ha aprendido que el peligro puede venir de donde menos se lo espera. Esta ruptura de la confianza básica afecta la autoestima ya que el traicionado tiende a buscar en sí mismo la culpa del engaño intentando encontrar una lógica a un acto que fue una decisión ajena. El proceso de recuperación no consiste en olvidar el suceso sino en reconstruir lentamente la capacidad de discernir en quién confiar sin que el miedo al pasado sabotee el presente.

La traición es como demoler los cimientos de una casa mientras los habitantes están durmiendo dentro. No se trata solo de reparar una pared rota sino de cuestionar si el suelo que pisamos es firme. La recuperación de este daño requiere un análisis honesto de los hechos y la aceptación de que el control sobre las acciones de los demás es inexistente. Solo mediante la validación del dolor propio y el distanciamiento de la fuente del conflicto se puede comenzar a restaurar la paz mental entendiendo que la integridad personal permanece intacta a pesar de la falta de integridad del otro. El tiempo por sí solo no cura la traición es la gestión consciente del trauma lo que permite que la herida cierre sin dejar una infección emocional permanente.

This account, this corner of the fediverse, has become one of the places I let those questions be noisy in public. What does healing mean when the conditions that harmed you are not gone, only rearranged into more respectable shapes? What actually happens inside a counselling relationship when disability or neurodivergence is present but unnamed, or misnamed, or politely ignored? How do we begin to notice the ways power and unspoken norms travel through even the most well-intentioned helping professions? How do we hold culture as something we are constantly creating and being created by, something we may need to grieve and interrogate and occasionally celebrate, often all at once, sometimes in the space of a single conversation?

I keep circling back to the interior labour of this work. The slow, repetitive practice of building emotional regulation when your nervous system's default setting is red alert. The awkwardness of learning self-compassion when sharp self-criticism has been your most reliable survival tool. The moments that feel like failure because you find yourself reacting in an old way, when in reality this is precisely how recovery moves, looping back on itself, revisiting old ground with slightly different eyes. The way trauma and joy can sit shoulder to shoulder in the same hour, the same therapy session, the same breath, and how unnerving and holy that can feel.

Rauch and Ansari suggest that silence can be deliberate and strategic, a form of self-regulation rather than withdrawal, a boundary rather than an absence. I think about this in relation to the freeze response, to the moments in my own history when going quiet was not giving up but holding on. The body stills because there are no safe words yet. Sometimes the silence is the story. And learning to hear it as such, to receive it without rushing to fill or fix it, is one of the things I am still practising, in music and in therapy and in the ordinary, unglamorous dailiness of trying to stay present in a life that sometimes arrives all at once.

I am not arriving anywhere with a finished theory of how any of this is supposed to work. I am coming, again and again, with fragments and questions and a stubborn intention to tell the truth as I understand it in the moment I am writing. That truth is often partial, often shifting. My understanding of myself, of trauma, of disability, of care, keeps moving, and I want it to. I would rather be inconsistent and alive to new information than seamless and rigidly wrong.

If you are still reading, you are already participating in something I care about. A space that treats complexity as ordinary rather than excessive. Where being too much is not an accusation but raw material. Where intense feeling and rigorous thought are both welcome at the same table. Where healing is not a linear journey toward a fixed destination but something more like learning to live inside unresolved chords without pretending they have resolved. Where music is both metaphor and method, both a way of speaking about change and a way of practising it in the body.

True silence does not exist. What we call silence is simply what we have not yet learned to hear. The fullness of life in quieter tones. The heartbeat of thought. The whispered rhythm of resilience. The steady murmur of healing is underway. And when we learn to tune into the music between the notes and into the truth held in breath, we do more than survive. We begin to sing again. This time, in a voice that is entirely our own.

I am not here to introduce myself so much as to keep turning up alongside you. To keep writing from the middle of things, not only from the rare polished moments that look good in hindsight. To keep noticing the small, ordinary, unglamorous ways humans find their way back to themselves, even inside systems that were never set up with them in mind. If any of these threads brush against something in your own story, then you are part of the imagined audience I write towards. And maybe, in a slow, imperfect, occasionally dissonant way, part of the choir that is still learning how to hear itself.
