I arrived in Chicago on August 7 sometime after 10 am. Because I didn't know that most of Indiana uses Eastern Time, I was disappointed that I did not gain an hour of sleep due to time change when announcements woke me up. I like it that the Viewliner roomette's upper bunk has windows and unlike the Superliner, I can sit up on the upper bunk. This is Chicago Union Station. While waiting for Empire Builder scheduled at 3:05 pm, I went out and had some Chicago tavern style pizza. While this is the originating station of Empire Builder, it departed over half an hour late. #chicago #amtrak #trainstation #architecture #photography #darktable

Another stark contrast can be found in Bruxelles' South station. This is the main station in Europe's capital, but one of the grimmest on the continent. At least if you come by public transport.

The tram stop is in a dark tunnel leading to a closed gate. Once you find your way inside, half of the staircases to platforms are randomly closed for no apparent reason. The main monumental building on the Eastern side is abandoned.

I exited in Brussels Central. The underground platforms were reminiscent of the RER tunnels in Paris - dark and grim - but the station building above was a great piece of art deco architecture! #Brussels #TrainStation

We passed several Belgian stations on the way:
- beetroot station of Noordenkempen/Brecht with its car parking lot and no bicycles in sight, just after the border,
- Antwerpen's undergrounds,
- Mechelen and its new canopy in construction,
- Brussels North, that the staff described as full of pickpockets. Quite funny considering the platforms were totally empty. The evening light was nice though!

It's all in the details...

At the moment, I’m carrying the Olympus Trip 35 in my pockets again.
It’s a very pleasant little camera, and it had been quite a while since I last used it.
Usually I carry a half-frame camera with me, but during these dark grey days in Belgium I just don’t manage to fill those 72 frames quickly enough. This way, though, I get to dive back into my Trip 35 archive again!
