Here's something new that I learned. In Spain, and likely everywhere else:

You get sick, say you bleed abundantly from a surgery that went wrong, and you have to stay in ER for a day to have you fixed. You lose a lot of blood and need to stay at home for a few days because you cannot work.

So: stress, trauma, money spent to go to the hospital, others helping you, etc..

The hospital gives you medical leave, as is normal.

Great? No.

Guess what?

First few days you do not get paid from work. The next weeks you get 65% of the salary.

So you are fucked health wise and in this system apparently is normal to not even get paid from your job...I mean you can't fucking work even if you want to, and you can't even get any help.

I cannot work because I bleed...
Oh..ok no problem here medical leave.
Thanks. Oh wait and I also lose money because I lose blood?
Yah...if you don't work, you cannot get paid...
But...but I cannot work for a few days...I need help...
Yah. Well. That is the law. Take care!

If this does not sound insane to you, you have a serious problem. You are part of the problem actually.

I did not have pain, or much at all, for the past 1-2 weeks. I have no clue why, but wow life feels damn different. I will continue my medical investigations into this but the body can be such a mystery even now when we have so much technology and knowledge.

But well. Fantastic.

Soon I will meet with the most fantastic friends on Earth to see the eclipse on the 12th of August. I am focusing on organizing that. I want to make sure we can see it through my telescope, but we can also record it. This week am doing more tests. The Sun will be super low for the eclipse - 20:30 Madrid time is the full eclipse. And 21:00 is the sunset. We may miss it if we are not at the right location...

Excellent point. I agree with your (implicit) position that the present-day model of infinite growth on a finite planet cannot continue (and will, therefore, collapse). This economy cannot be made circular either. Efforts to entirely replace fossil fuel use with "renewables" will, paradoxically, hugely increase the use of fossil fuels.

(For the record: I fully accept that anthropogenic global warming is happening, and that use of fossil fuels is the most significant causative factor.)

For more details in support of your argument, look at the article linked in the quoted post, by a guy who works in supply chains and logistics (and who used to work in manufacturing earlier).

Unfortunately, many posters here seem to be smugly lecturing you, without getting the fairly logical and obvious point you are making. That's because none of them are trying to work out the energy and, more importantly, material logistics of setting up the infrastructure for so-called renewables. Once you look at the raw materials that go into the manufacturing and installation of this infrastructure, you realize this setup isn't renewable at all.

Yet, advocates of green technologies still believe that we could “somehow” electrify the recovery of critical minerals, and continue with civilization in a “business as usual but greener” manner. Ok. Here are the issues:

1. Google is an Ad Company. So their incentive will always be to serve you ads, collect data. You are their customer. They do not simply make these tools to help you, and make it easier and more reiable to search for stuff. Ask yourself how will Google, and others, make money off of these "AI" tools now? It will be even more deceiving and sneaky.
2. In a sane society (not trade-based) these tools would be tested a lot. For accuracy, for what the outcome can be if billions of people use them, etc.. Did Google do that? I doubt.
3. If Google removes the search results and replaces it all with "AI" summaries and explanations, two things happen: Complete reliance on the biggest Ad Company for answering your search queries. And second, people will further drift apart from understanding that trust was a key factor in knowing if a source is valid or not. Like where is the info coming from. Now it will simply come from the AI God. Blackhole.

In theory to have access to a faster and more reliable way of finding information is a must in a world that is saturated with information. BUT the way it is done now it will make rich people richer, and the consumers more "consuming".

It is simply a normal evolution of a trade-based society. As it is in the offline, it is in the online too.

Same society, same shit.

That is great and frustrating at the same time. This "enshitification" is totally a natural result of trading stuff. There is 0 difference between supermarkets putting a 5.99 price on food, or putting candies where people stay in line to pay, or deceiving people with those old ads on TV, and Facebook, Youtube and the like adding clickable ads in the middle of a video or making it play the next video automatically, or not making it clear what is a post what is an ad....

These are trade-based goods and services, and for them to sell, you have to engage in these "marketing" practices.

THIS IS NOTHING NEW!

Pretty much all companies and individuals do these in order to sell shit. All need to be biased towards their own business. Even the local small businesses are doing it. Everyone does it.

So instead of selecting a few of the most outrageous practices, call them shitty, and point the finger at them, better do 2 things:

1. Understand why these products are "shitty". It is trade, the need to trade, that makes people put more ads, collect more data, etc.. Currency, data, or attention trade.
2. Simply make 2 categories: trade-free and trade-based. If a product or a service is trade-free, it means it does not want anything from you, the user. Not your data, not your currency, not your attention. Therefore why would it want to make that product or service shitty?

Makes no sense.

Anyway, thank you past me for spending so many years creating these. They are really valuable books and they completely changed the way I see the world.

My coffee is cooling, and I probably ought to get up to top off the cup. It’s still drinkable, though, and with my feet propped on the edge of the desk, it may be a few minutes before I muster the motivation to walk the thirty feet into the kitchen.

Speaking of coffee, I went online yesterday to buy the same gourmet beans I picked up last month, only to find the price had climbed yet again. My first reaction was a startled oh wow, followed quickly by the decision to wait it out and settle for a less expensive brand.

Still, I can’t help but wonder how much of that price is tied to tariffs. The administration may have lifted the coffee duties, but surely there are lingering adjustments baked into the market. After all, tariffs had spiked to nearly 50% just weeks ago. Add in Brazil’s droughts and Vietnam’s floods, and supply is bound to tighten. Shipping across South America only complicates matters—though the danger seems to fall more on small boats than on large vessels.

Gunboat diplomacy appears to be the order of the day in those waters, with the navy striking and sinking small craft. It’s hard to make sense of. If traffickers are losing boats, surely, they’ve already found other routes. Assuming they’re clever enough to adapt, what exactly are these destroyed boats carrying? It can’t be that the navy is blasting away indiscriminately, Yosemite Sam–style… can it? I hope not. Still, some of the targeting feels questionable, and I know one thing for certain: I wouldn’t want to be fishing in that region right now.

Meanwhile, the price of beans continues to rise.
