This is quite disappointing from Robert Kuttner (and The American Prospect) which claims to have the backs of the poor. The #trade did help pull 100s of millions of people from out of abject poverty in #China and elsewhere. #tariffs are literally turning the clock back on the poor outside the #US Why do such experts end up being such petty nationalists? Why can't they be... well... just human?

Trump’s tariffs are more petulance than policy, but strategic uses of tariffs can make economic sense. Look at China’s declining trade surplus with the U.S.Robert Kuttner (The American Prospect)

In an announcement, Elon Musk’s AI company xAI unveiled a new tool called “Halftime” which “dynamically weaves AI-generated ads into the scenes you’re watching.” Instead of cutting to an ad break, Halftime manipulates the characters onscreen into deviating from the script and prominently brandishing a product of a marketer’s choice.

👆 This, right here, is the best explanation why #russians have not given up, continue to have vast funds to finance the war and their attacks against #NATO members, and #Putin doesn't believe NATO is serious about defending #Europe
Too many #European countries remain slaves to imports from russian war #criminals. They continue to trade, funding extreme violence and murder by the russians in #Ukraine

#Trump giving in to #China on #trade (because he had no other choice) has made the #EU even LESS likely to compromise on a #TradeDeal.
Now they're putting an #ultimatum on team Trump. Not out of necessity, but for the fun of it. (And also to further throw them off balance.)
This is going terrible for the #US side.

"With new tariffs, slowing economic growth, chaos in government, and a debt ceiling crisis looming, America is being isolated in ways that most serve Vladimir Putin.
The Trump-Musk administration is, as predicted, oriented around solving problems for Vladimir Putin."

"What makes Mr Trump’s 'Liberation Day' so dangerous is its scale. In 2024, the US ran a $1.2tn trade goods deficit. Only two months from his White House return, Mr Trump has imposed tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, China, all steel and aluminium imports, and foreign cars and auto parts. Next up: friends in Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India and Vietnam."

The Guardian view on Donald Trump’s tariffs: a spectacle of struggle and control
Editorial: The US president wields tariffs not as a policy tool but as an instrument of pressure, rewarding loyalty and punishing defiance – even among alliesEditorial (The Guardian)
"This chart also tells you that you should ignore anyone citing the relatively mild effects of Trump’s 2017-18 tariffs as a reason not to be worried. Trump’s actions then were minor trade skirmishes, while this is all-out trade war."
The infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff played a major role, of course, in precipitating the Great Depression, worldwide economic devastation.

Paul Krugman offers a chart showing the rise in tariffs that Goldman Sachs is predicting Trump to announce today. Krugman comments:
"That bump at the left of the chart is the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff. So if the reality is anything like this, it will be a much bigger shock to the economy than Smoot-Hawley, especially because imports as a share of the economy are three times what they were in the 1920s."
