Eleven Mile Reservoir with Spinney Mountain and more-distant peaks. I had gone up into the mountains to try to escape some very hot weather, but despite being at an elevation of about 8600 ft (2620 m), it was still quite hot up there (88° F/31°C)– and the sun's intensity seemed greater at that altitude. - Eleven Mile State Park, Colorado, USA #Colorado #lake #americanwest #nature #landscape #outdoors #hiking #summer #mountains #RockyMountains #Fujifilm #Tamron

"Time to leave." - Me, after witnessing the sudden appearance of a giant cloud of dust to the west, rapidly progressing towards me up TX 217, where I was standing along the road. This was the evening of June 25th, when storms moved through the area around sunset. I scurried back across to the road to my vehicle, hopped in, and no sooner had I closed the door, it started rocking as the wind made its violent arrival. - Randall County, Texas, USA. #Texas #TexasPanhandle #AmericanWest #nature #landscape #outdoors #windmill #sky #clouds #storm #sunset #thunderstorm #rain #summer #GreatPlains #Fujifilm #FujifilmXT5 #Tamron

Mesocyclone of a supercell thunderstorm south of Umbarger, Texas on June 23, 2026. I had driven out that way to try to put some space between myself and the storm, because I wanted to see its structure. I saw a tons of “real” storm chasers out there, so I knew I'd picked a good spot. This storm generated some funnel clouds and baseball-sized hail. I only saw a little rain, since I had intentionally kept my distance. - Umbarger, Texas, USA #Texas #TexasPanhandle #AmericanWest #summer #nature #landscape #outdoors #road #clouds #supercell #thunderstorm #stormchasing #Fujifilm #FujifilmXT5 #Tamron

The three-state border. The yellow concrete marker indicates where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. It is just 15 km from Kilpisjärvi, and tourists flock here to see this spot on snowmobile safaris. While the surroundings are beautiful, the border marker itself is just a man-made rock. The noise from the snowmobiles disrupts the silence of the fjells and causes erosion and compaction of the ground. I have never understood the need to go into nature with motorized means if you are a tourist or hiker. It contradicts all the things nature has to offer you: silence, slowness, and the raw beauty of the Nordic wilderness. Also, you are disturbing the wildlife. For those who live here, it is a different story, of course.

The culprit. This is the Golden Eagle the Rock Ptarmigans were scared of in my last photo. Look at this bird, huge, powerful and so impressive. Seeing more and more Golden Eagles up north really makes me happy. I know that reindeer herders might not appreciate them as much since they can prey on reindeer calves or even hunt injured adults. I am also thinking that I need to get a better lens for wildlife photos. My current Tamron 50-400 is not fast enough nor has enough reach.

Dead forest. It was interesting to see that also in Norway and Sweden there are vast dead birch forests, just like in Finnish Lapland. I believe these were killed by the same bug, Epirrita autumnata, a moth whose larvae feed on birch leaves and other plants, which caused widespread birch die-off in Finnish Lapland during 1965–66.

I’m starting to think that January–February is my favorite time of the year in the fjells. Sure, there are only a couple of hours of light each day, especially in January. But the light has so much variety, from very delicate and subtle to more dramatic. This example is from our February 2026 ski tour to Pältsan.

The very grand Isdalen valley on the day we tried to descend into it. The slopes down into the valley looked too steep and icy to ski with pulkas, and with my friend’s limited ski touring experience we decided to turn back. On the map the terrain looks quite different, but what it never shows is how the snow has accumulated on the slopes or how icy they actually are.

We were caught in this heavy winter storm during our ski tour to Pältsän, and it raged for two nights. I might not be the best at reading weather patterns from clouds or wind, but this time my gut feeling was right. I told my friend we were not going any further, even though we still had plenty of daylight left. We set up camp, and about an hour later heavy gusts and snowfall hit us and did not let up for two nights.

Admittedly, it was pretty neat to be able to sit out on the balcony of our room and see whales breaching in the distance. We were a little south of Juneau, Alaska.

From one of our occasional zoo trips. The space next to the tiger enclosure had a baby tapir running around, and the tiger's obvious interest meant it was striking a quite photogenic pose that day.

Going under one of the reindeer fences found all over Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Lapland. Sometimes there are gates, but often you have to find a spot where the fence does not quite touch the ground and just crawl under. These same kinds of fences also run along almost the entire Finnish Norwegian border. In a past post about a similar situation I claimed that only Nordic citizens can cross the border like this, but I was wrong. All citizens of Schengen countries are allowed to do so.

I chose the wrong path and slipped on a rock, ending up with an open wound that bled surprisingly badly for how small the cut was. The force of the fall was enough that I could have broken my leg, as it got wedged between me and two other rocks. The cut even got infected afterwards and required antibiotics to heal, as it was still open after a month and swollen.

October 2023 in the Pulju Wilderness Area, Finland. On the day of departure I was surprised by the first snow and had to haphazardly pack gear that would let me survive freezing temperatures. I did not bring skis, as I was unsure how much snow there would actually be. Needless to say, my rucksack weighed a ton on that trip. After injuring my knee in a slip and with the conditions turning bad, I had to cut my planned three week hike down to just one. Still, a nice hike 🤣

The bell house at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse from my visit there in early June. Part of this building was recently rebuilt after being heavily damaged in the January 2024 winter storms that wreaked havoc up and down the coast of Maine.

I’d been seeing these Canada geese with their babies on my drive to work and the other day I was finally able to stop and photograph them. They were adorable 🥹 From what I can tell, they were probably between 2 and 3 weeks old at the time of the photos.
