I met two more plot neighbors at the #CommunityGarden today, and harvested some new potatoes. I have one more potato plant left there (that's not ready for harvesting but close), and more in containers at my #HomeGarden. Leaving the dirt on the harvested potatoes, and storing them for a week or two before we eat them. I may plant some more in the community garden and might be able to get a second harvest before the season is over.

We had 100°F / 38°C heat for several days this week and I thought it might be useful to report on peppers.

Most of the peppers I grow are the species baccatum - exceptionally long-lived perennials that can be cut back in winter and start blooming in March/April. They’re also extremely cold tolerant.

Well, a couple of new cultivars are showing that they’re not heat tolerant.

MIT scientist created a new type of solar panel that is transparent. It picks up only infrared and ultraviolet light. These can be used on windows or any clear pane (like cell phone screens) as well as flexible surfaces.

“They estimate that using coated windows in a skyscraper could provide more than a quarter of the building’s energy needs without changing its look.”

Switzerland is densely cloudy in winter when energy is needed the most. So engineers installed solar panels above the clouds on the sides of mountains. It’s so effective that they’re expanding the project to other mountains.

A quarter (!) of Pakistani households now use solar panels. This seems like a major win for the climate and Pakistan’s energy independence but if you read the whole article, it puts lower income households at a bigger disadvantage.

We recently started this project (sweet potatoes growing ) bug am looking for someone who can help us out by teaching us how to grow these potatoes effectively. The potatoes grew well and healthy looking but they didn't put on any potatoe over there down when we reached the day of harvesting , the we couldn't get anything.

Peppers and beans this week.

Update on rat situation: I caged and netted my pepper plants but now they are digging underneath the cages! They even managed to move the bricks I placed around the fencing. So I bit the bullet and ordered solar-powered electric fencing. Won’t arrive until Friday.

So far, their favorite pepper seems to be ají habanero, also my favorite for drying bc it tastes like sweet saffron. 😭

Sustainable solar-powered desalination!

“Desalination has always been an energy-hungry way of turning salt water into fresh water, making it largely the preserve of wealthy countries with abundant fossil fuel reserves.
Yet, an outdoor demonstration prototype in China has managed to exhibit year-long stability with zero utility energy costs, thanks to a new type of photothermal material.”

Beans this week. Romano purpiat, edamame and Celine. The edamame are supposed to be tankuro.

I saved the seeds from last year. As a mature shelled bean, they were black. When they were ripe for eating, they were mottled black and green but this year the beans inside are totally green. Has this happened to anyone?

Peppers and fruit the rats/squirrels did not eat (or tried once and rejected)

Ají cacho de cabra
Ají chinchi amarillo
Grenada seasoning
Peppapeach stripey

Physalis grisea and wild tomato

Ones they did eat were ají habanero, ají dulce orange and thunder mountain longhorn. The first two are heatless but the last one is 70k SHU.

My local coffee shop is so heckin' cool! They're doing a clothing swap *and* a clothing/textile repurposing workshop class in July. First time on both, I believe!

Support your local businesses (not billionaires!)-- you never know what coolness they're doing.

Okay one more. I don't mean to inundate you with good news.

"Copenhagen’s city government reported in early July that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 and 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety and comfort of cycling."

It's #SolarPunkSunday so a reminder that my new book is available for pre-order in all stores.

It's the story of an old woman struggling to fit in because her village has a very tight sense of community, yet she likes to be alone, so she takes on a leadership role so as not to appear anti-social. But, a coloniser invades, and she has to coordinate their defence, yet they have no army, no weapons. How will they survive?

Proboscidea louisianica, devil’s claw. Native vegetable to the south east. It’s a bit like okra but is so far growing better bc the slugs avoid it.

The flowers are quite smelly, like perfumed pee and the odor is very strong. It’s noticeable at least from 20ft away. The vegetable pods smell like sweaty feet but ppl swear they taste good cooked. We’ll see…

Gardening for heat, substitutions.

Huazontle, komo and evening primrose. They grow large, produce loads, have a very long growing season with cut and come again method and thrive in heat. I get more out of these plants in the space they grow than broccoli, cauliflower and gailan.

Even better? The cabbage whites don’t destroy them and they’re not water hogs!

Bookmark this thread, friends, for a really thorough read through when you have your coffee and a few minutes to follow all the links. One of my concerns as a near-grad from a program that combines city building, futurism and climate change is that the “climate change” part of it is both the foundation and the umbrella over all and is so vast we cannot comprehend it. The way fish do not know what water is. Even me. The challenge for the rest of my life will be working with that. #solarPunkSunday

Some #SolarpunkSunday musings...

We often talk in my solarpunk bookclub about whether solarpunk needs to be a roadmap and what that might look like. In
@RebeccaSolnit 's *The Beginning Comes After the End*, she talks about how the prefiguring of a better world is already here...

Anyway, my brain needed to get out those #SolarpunkSunday thoughts, carry on 🤣

(and I look forward to any insights y'all have about this, I'm still noodling)

@Joshuakevins12@mastodon.social
we're all co-creating #solarpunk together but the tagline for my podcast that lifts up solarpunk stories says it's about creating (and imagining) a more sustainable and just world and the struggle to get there.

It includes things like radical compassion and community (not rugged individualism).

Overwintering peppers in the greenhouse: the first baccatum to ripen is either ají chinchi amarillo or ají cacho de cabra. The cabra seems to be a little water-stressed/heat-struck so may have ripened earlier bc of damage.

Ají chinchi amarillo was also the first to flower.

French study shows that regenerative farming has a protective effect during times of drought. Regenerative farms produce a higher yield than crops industrially managed when there is water scarcity.

I went with my friend @Joshuakevins12 On camp of farming
What amazed us was that we visited a fish pond, the man who was caring for the fish told us some facts about fish
We saw the fish feeds but were smelling as poultry droppings and left us wondering, he more explored us and saw a poultry farm where there down there was a fish pond, poultry droppings were acting as fish droppings, but we were left wondering both of #pridemonth #solarpunksunday #fediverse #gardening @GarDenIng #biodiversity

Peppers 2026

In the race of overwintered peppers to ripen first, a dark horse wins, Greneda seasoning (chinense). The first one to flower was ají chinchi amarillo and they’re still green.

Unfortunately, all the chinense overwintered in the greenhouse are horribly stunted or died. Even the ripening peppers are too small. The baccatums all grew back normally. Lesson learned: chinense peppers should be overwintered in temps above 50F/10C.

New solar device can desalinate water while also extracting lithium. It also does not produce the toxic brine that conventional desalination plants do.

This would be revolutionary for lithium mining as it is cleaner, cheaper and less destructive than extracting it from land deposits.

In about three weeks, I'll launch my new novella, about an old woman with social anxiety who finds herself organising the defence of a decentralised nation when colonisers invade to steal the tech that makes her village a #solarpunk utopia. This feels like a little green miracle. I got seeds to the sidr tree as part of my #ClimateChangeGardening project where I give out seeds, cuttings, seedlings of edible plants that thrive in heat and won’t lose their crops to unexpected frosts/winter heat waves.

6 months after it germinated (2024), a rabbit destroyed the tree, leaving only a bit of roots left. It resprouted in 2025 and now the tree is flowering! 😊💚

Progress on giant raised garden bed of free woodchips:

The eggshells do seem to help deter slugs but isn’t a 100% solution for the okra.

Cantaloupe isn’t too happy, leaves are getting a little chlorotic. They were seedlings transplanted with extra soil and yesterday was first time fertilizing them with seaweed foliar spray and holly-tone.

Everything else is doing great. All the corn sprouted not sure if it will prosper exclusively in wood chips.
