"Ancient Towers" for #SaturdayScenery

This desert slot canyon is in the Carrizo Badlands, some 1.5 hours east of San Diego (and then about an hour of hiking with some scrambling).

Ironically, it is also cooler there today than it is in San Diego. 🥴 That the desert is cooler than the coastal areas and inland areas west of the mountains is not uncommon when we have Santa Ana weather, but it's certainly quite extreme at the moment...

The sun was getting lower in the sky by the time I reached Llanthony.

Some great colour in the trees and on the hillside, with a sky blue sky and just a hint of white cloud. It's still warm - T-shirt weather in late September - but the descent was tiring, and it had been a long day.

Just behind me is Llanthony Prior. By now, I was definitely looking forward to a pint and a good meal. And pudding. Oh, and a Welsh whisky chaser 😀

Lentoid Sunset

It's mid-November, and the sun in the south is about to set. It's been a windy day, blustery to begin with but increasing during the day to become the kind of weather where you need to open the car door with a careful and strong grip.

The heavy cloud has been sculpted into the most remarkable formations, stacked and rounded in surreal shapes, coloured beautifully by the setting sun.

Poisonous

Under a cloud of volcanic gases with the eruption behind us, we were looking out to sea.

The vog had passed across Vatnajökull glacier on its way from the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga and had cooled, most of the steam had condensed and the gases - mainly SO₂ CO₂ and H₂S - had separated. The lighter sulphurous gases can be seen above while the heavier ones formed a layer over the water.

Everything you see here is currently on fire or has burned, best I can determine from the official maps. The Babylon fire is currently estimated at 104,525 acres and is 44% contained. Fire activity for the Babylon fire is expected to remain active. Cause has not be determined, but the extreme drought in the area cannot have helped.

[edited to update acres and containment for July 11, 2026]

Rainbow Canyon

It had been a miserable drizzly day. Short bursts of sunshine had provided fleeting rainbows in the showers, but it wasn't until we reached our target for the day - Kárahnjúkavirkjun¹ - that the sun came out at last.

The rain was moving away, I walked to the centre of the dam and caught this brief wonder emerging from the throat of the canyon.

Magical.

Following The River

The russet hillsides of autumn lie in sequence ahead, snaking the road. From under shadow, we look forward into sunshine.

Outwash

Meltwater from mighty Vatnajökull glacier has carried ground rock down through the mountains. Over time, this has been deposited in deltas where the river spreads and the current slows.

The result is these beautiful braided sandbanks, cut and recut by changing water volume, piled up in the quiet times and then swept away by jökulhlaup.

Ice And A Slice

A gorgeous day amongst the glaciers. Clean water glittering, clear sky, clarity of view.

Go Down Like Nine Pins

Cresting the summit of the mountain pass, we were rewarded with this astonishing view. A huge marsh below us, with a river cutting through a sandbank to deposit silt into the sea.

From 690 metres at the top, the road drops almost to sea level within 1.3 kilometres.

Shadow Play

The clouds are trying to hide the sculpted slopes, the sun dapples highlights and creates a serene scene.

In spite, the cloud sits atop the highest peak. In response the sun spotlights the neighbour.

At ground level, sunlight wins, for now.

Cap Cloud

Moist air forced to climb the windward slopes has condensed into a dome in the cooler air.

The pinnacles are embedded in it, almost clasping the cloud with a gentle touch.

This beautiful and ethereal formation evolved on a drizzly day in early October.
