With as many as 18 candidates in the Democratic primary for IL-09, it is clear that Illinois desperately needs ranked choice voting for its primary elections. This race could theoretically be won by a candidate with as little as 5.56% of the vote due to vote splitting. RCV would require the winning candidate to have a true majority of >50%, all while mitigating the problems of "spoilers" and "vote splitting."

Why should parties use RCV in primaries? It drives party unity. Under the current system, the winning candidate could win with <50% of the vote when many candidates are running, which leaves many party members disappointed and unenthused with their presidential candidate. RCV requires the winner to have true majority support (>50%), so the winner is a true consensus choice that more voters in the party can actually be excited about.

What would the Illinois Secretary of State's Illinois State Flag Contest have looked like if it used #RankedChoiceVoting? Voters would have been able to choose their first choice, second choice, third, and so on. RCV requires that the winner must get >50% of the vote.
