The Castle of the Teutonic Order, Świecie, Poland 🇵🇱
Part 1 of 2: Construction of the castle and the era of the Teutonic Order (1335–1466)

The castle was built after 1335 on a strategic site at the confluence of the Vistula and Wda rivers. Construction was initiated by Teutonic commanders Konrad von Bruningsheim and Günther von Hohenstein. Work began around 1344 and lasted until the mid-14th century, although completion took until the end of the century.

The stronghold was a square, 51 meters on each side, with four cylindrical towers and a 34.7-meter-high main tower. In 1377, it became the second Teutonic fortification equipped with firearms.

In 1410, during the Polish-Teutonic War, the castle, under the command of Heinrich von Plauen, successfully defended itself, although the city was surrendered to the Poles.

In 1454, during the Thirteen Years’ War, the castle was captured by Pomeranian knights, and after the Second Peace of Toruń in 1466, it became the property of the Kingdom of Poland.

Bay of Gdańsk, Poland 🇵🇱

In the Middle Ages, the port of Gdańsk was established on the bay. From the 13th century onward, it became one of the most powerful trading centers in Europe, thanks primarily to its accession to the Hanseatic League and the growing trade with the countries of Northern Europe, Central Europe, and Scandinavia. The port’s centuries-long history cemented its position as a major trading hub, bringing the city fame and economic power.

In the 19th century, the port began to be modernized and expanded, but the real breakthrough came in the 20th century, when the modern port of Gdynia was established within the bay, independent of Gdańsk and accessible without the need to use the Free City of Gdańsk.

Since the 1920s, the bay has become a strategic point in Poland’s economic development, enabling the development of ports that remain important logistics and shipping centers to this day. Today, the Bay of Gdańsk is not only the regional economic artery but also a place of significant importance for tourism, science, and environmental protection, symbolizing the region’s historical and economic development.

Port of Gdynia, Poland
Part 2 of 2: Development

Gdynia quickly gained importance, becoming not only a port but also one of the most dynamically developing cities in Poland. By 1938, its population had increased from approximately 1,300 to 120,000, reflecting intensive urbanization and infrastructure development. The city acquired modernist architecture and a unique urban layout designed by Stanisław Filipkowski. The port expanded, taking on military, commercial, and fishing functions, playing a key role in the development of Polish exports and enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. It was a symbol of Polish sovereignty and independence, an important “window to the world” for the young state.

Gdynia’s development was brutally interrupted by World War II, but after its end, the city was quickly rebuilt and continues to play a key role in Poland’s maritime economy. Today, Gdynia is a testament to the determination and vision of the Second Polish Republic, combining history with modernity on the Baltic Sea.

Port of Gdynia, Poland
Part 1 of 2: Construction

After regaining independence in 1918, Poland gained access to the sea, but faced serious difficulties using the port of Gdańsk. Gdańsk was established as a Free City under the patronage of the League of Nations, which limited Poland’s freedom of maritime trade. This resulted in numerous blockades and difficulties, particularly evident during the Polish-Soviet War of 1920, when Polish access to the port was closed. This situation forced the authorities of the Second Polish Republic to decide to build its own, independent seaport. In 1920, engineer Tadeusz Wenda identified Gdynia as the best location due to its naturally deep waters and favorable geographical conditions at the mouth of the Chylonia River. The formal basis for construction was provided by an act of the Sejm of September 23, 1922. Work began in 1921, and the temporary port was officially opened in April 1923. The first merchant ship, the French freighter Kentucky, arrived at the port on August 13, 1923, marking the symbolic beginning of Poland’s maritime expansion and the construction of Gdynia as a modern port city.

The New Motława River, Gdańsk, Poland

The New Motława River in Gdańsk was created in 1576 by digging a watercourse that connected the Bersen Sandbank with two closed ponds, creating a new navigable branch of the Motława River. Initially, it served as a defensive moat protecting Gdańsk’s granaries, which were a key element of the city’s economic development. In 1599, the New Motława River was widened and deepened to allow for free commercial navigation and expand Gdańsk’s port capacity, which became one of the most important trading centers on the Baltic Sea.

The New Motława separates Granary Island from Ołowianka, Długie Ogrody, and the Lower Town, creating a unique urban space. The water level was regulated by the Stone Lock, built between 1619 and 1623, which protected the city from floods and controlled water flow.

After World War II, the New Motława River fell into oblivion. However, in 1997, to celebrate the city’s 1,000th anniversary, a marina was built here, revitalizing this section of the Gdańsk waterfront. Today, the New Motława is a picturesque place for strolls and a symbol of the rich history of the port city of Gdańsk.

The Trinity Tower, Lublin, Poland

It is one of the city’s most important landmarks and a characteristic element of Lublin’s Old Town. It was built between 1826 and 1828 according to the design of the Italian architect Antonio Corazzi, who gave it a neo-Gothic style. The tower serves as the bell tower of the Lublin cathedral, which is one of the oldest churches in the city, with origins dating back to the 13th century.

The tower is about 57 meters tall and is the highest point in the city, visible from many places in Lublin. Its distinctive green-blue pyramidal roof is recognizable from afar. In its prime, it served defensive and sacred functions and was also an important navigational point within the city.

Today, the Trinity Tower functions as a museum — it houses the Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art, where valuable exhibits related to spirituality and Church history are displayed. From the viewing platform at its top, there is a panoramic view of Lublin and its surroundings, making it a popular tourist spot.
