A colony of false turkey tails is growing on one of our old crab apple trees. We have 3 old crabapple trees - 1 in front yard & 2 in backyard. They've all hosted both true & false turkey tail fungi before.

Just back from a phenomenal 8 days on the Wonderland Trail with @andrewbriscoe in Mt Rainier National Park. The trail more than delivered on its name and I was continually at loss for words to describe the beauty of Tahoma. Truly she is the queen of the Cascades.
I'll fill in this thread with pictures and stories as the week goes on. For now I'm struggling to adjust to being back in civilization and NOT walking 10-11 hours a day. It is awfully nice to be clean again.

Saturday "Run"
Completed a 20K trail running event on Saturday that was as beautiful as it was painful! With over 1,000 meters of elevation gain (and descent) it was mostly a fast and steady walk straight up the mountain with some running during any flats.
I was treated with an amazing view of Mt Rainier near the summit, waterfalls and crystal clear alpine lakes. It was everything I've dreamed about for running views. Downhill portion was rough!

Did my best to get these shots, it was very dark under the canopy of trees and a fast bird, so high ISO was essential.
This was my first time seeing this bird with my camera, I've seen one 4 to 5 times previously including the afternoon before while running or hiking with my camera. The next day I went to another location far from where I saw one running and the first thing I heard was it's loud and obnoxious call. Since I'd heard it the day before I knew exactly what it was and found it quickly.
These birds are really cool and look so much like the cartoon version of Woody Woodpecker.
On another note... Sky Shark got very few likes yesterday and is unhappy.

North America River Otter 🦦
Well here's a new one, didn't even know we had these here. I was out taking some photos yesterday morning and had called it quits. As I drove home I saw an eagle fly over a lake so I decided to stop. Some eagles and hawks were very upset up in the trees but no good views. I did a short hike to get down by the water where I did spot a Bald Eagle across from me. I took some photos and scanned the tree tops until I heard some grunting. To my left were two otters sitting on this log who had seen me first. One quick photo and they jumped in the water. I hiked further around the shore and back but never saw them again.
