Berry Spectrum

This photo shows a line of southern dewberries nestled among leaves and other plants. I desaturated the surrounding foliage to draw attention to the berries, each one at a different stage of ripening.

ā€œMonterey Cypress Forestā€ — Fog drifts across a Point Lobos landscape of Monterey cypress trees.

This grove of leaning and twisted trees lines the upper edge of a steep, rocky Point Lobos cliff that drops straight to a small bay. You can see the beginning of the slope in the photograph, but if you walked past the trees in this scene you would seen be at the precipice. I made the photograph in one of my favorite light conditions. It had been foggy — the thick, gray kind of fog — but now it was thinning and opening up to let in soft, filtered sunlight. The fog still partially obscures the more distant trees on the far side of the little bay.

White Sentinel in the Trees

I captured this image of a great egret perched in a tree beside a pond near Albany, Georgia. It reminds me of the pond just down the road from our house in Louisiana. When we first moved here, hundreds of egrets and herons would gather in the trees around that pond every evening. In the afternoons, I’d watch them flying in from every direction, all headed to the same roost.

But then a house went up right at the pond’s edge, and the birds must have decided to find a quieter, more private place to settle for the night.

ā€œLake, Forest, and Ridgesā€ — Ellery Lake and surrounding peaks, Sierra Nevada.

I previously shared another photograph made from this same vantage point. That photograph is more tightly cropped and does not include sky. By using a somewhat shorter focal length I was able to include a bit more of the forest at lower left and the rising ridge at the right, though these choices required me to include the sky in the frame.

Pink Blossoms and Feathers

The brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) is a hunter forager, an omnivore. This one visited me one morning, the first that I'd seen that year. The year before, a couple built a nest in a shrub right outside our front door.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

ā€œOld Cypressā€ — An old Monterey cypress tree at Point Lobos, California.

The Monterey cypress trees at Point Lobos are rugged and diverse specimens. This is no forest of uniform Sierra Nevada trees. Each tree seems to have its own personality, formed by its exposure to light, proximity to cliffs, age, and the wind. Aside from the fact that they often grow in groves, many of them remind me of the stunted and twisted trees found at timberline in the highest mountains.

ā€œTrees and Peakā€ — Mount Data and High Sierra forest.

This was a slow, quiet Sierra morning. I had set up camp at Tuolumne Meadows the night before, and this was my first early outing of the trip. I headed up Tioga Road before sunrise and decided to cross the pass and visit some favorite areas on the east side of the crest. I started by going up high where I could photograph sunrise light on the highest peaks. After finishing that — and poking around a few interesting nearby spots — I decided to head back down the way I had come.

Twilight in Color

It’s fun to watch how the colors of twilight change from night to night. One night the sky burned with reds and oranges tucked into the clouds; The next night it’s all soft pinks and cool blues. This one has a painterly feel to it—like someone brushed the sky with pastels—and it’s the kind of image that would look beautiful printed on canvas.

For those who love skies set ablaze with color—sunsets that linger, clouds that speak in texture and light—my gallery holds a collection crafted just for you.

ā€œTrees and Rising Sunā€ — The sun, slighlty diffused by clearing fog, rises behind Point Lobos trees.

Sometimes I arrive at a location with no specific plan in mind beyond ā€œmaking photographs.ā€ That was the case on this morning when I drove down toward the Big Sur area very early. Before Monterey I encountered thick fog, and I started contemplating fog photographs, perhaps at Point Lobos. The fog continued as I passed Monterey, skirted Carmel, and started down Highway 1 beyond Carmel Valley. It looked like I would get foggy conditions at Point Lobos… until a moment later when the fog inexplicably cleared.

Reflections in the Reeds

I see great egrets all over the South, and they’re striking enough that I can’t help photographing them whenever I get the chance. I spotted this particular egret near Beaufort, South Carolina, standing out in that Lowcountry light the way only a big white bird can.

ā€œRural Stone Buildings at Loch Stackā€ — A cluster of stone buildings in Northwest Scotland.

The northwest Scotland landscape is spectacular in so many ways — the highlands mountains of course, but also the coast, and the lower elevation valleys and rivers. It is relatively ā€œempty,ā€ in the sense that you are often out of sight of signs of civilization, aside from the single-track road you might be driving. But empty as it is, it is not wilderness, and there are plenty of little hamlets and isolated homes and lodgings.

Rose Breasted Beauty

This rose‑breasted grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus) stopped by one spring and stayed around for a couple of weeks, brightening the yard every day. Unfortunately, none showed up this year—maybe next spring will bring them back. For the longest time I thought these birds belonged to the finch family (Fringillidae), but I eventually learned they’re actually part of the cardinal family (Cardinalidae). That little mistake meant reshuffling a few photos in my collections. Birds in the cardinal family really are some of the most colorful visitors you can get.

If you’re captivated by rose-breasted grosbeaks and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

ā€œMonterey Cypress Trees, Cliffs and Surfā€ — Pacifc surf crashes against the base of cliffs with Monterey cypress trees.

Point Lobos and I go back a long ways. Shortly after my parents moved to the San Francisco Bay Area — I was four years old then — they began to take us on interesting day trips. A favorite was going to Monterey, which was a much smaller and quieter place then. A highlight of those visits was traveling a few miles south to Point Lobos, where we explored tide pools, walked the trails, and watched sea lions. This was one of the first places where I began to make photographs, likely with a simple Brownie camera and some black and white film.

Profile of a Woodland Guest

I really should get out more, because most days I just sit in my backyard and photograph whatever local birds decide to drop by. This little tufted titmouse was checking out the opening at the top of an old, weathered feeder I’ve patched up more times than I can count. It leaned forward and peered down into the darkness, clearly weighing whether it could slip through the hole to reach the seed below. After a moment of consideration, it abandoned the plan. This image captures the instant right after that moment of curiosity passed.

Tufted titmice are a favorite among a select group of bird enthusiasts. To celebrate these charming creatures, I’ve curated a special collection dedicated entirely to them in my photo gallery. Take a look!

ā€œBlue Doorā€ — Blue door, brick wall, cobblestone street, Shrewsbury, England.

I made this photograph the English town of Shrewsbury. (More about that place below.) If a photograph is ā€œaboutā€ something, this one is about more than one thing. To be sure, it is a record of a specific spot in a particular town, a doorway to a building with a sign for ā€œAlfred Mansell & Co. Auctioneers.ā€It is perhaps a record of some history, too, given the old brick walls, the weathered doorway, and the cobblestones at the bottom of the frame. But most of all, I think it is about color, the ā€œtemperatureā€ contrast between the warm tones of partially-sunlit bricks and the very cool blues of the doorway in shadow.

ā€œTufa, Sky, and Waterā€ — An island of tufa formations under early morning sky, Mono Lake.

I think of this photograph, in part, as a study in tones. I had been photographing a brilliant sunrise in color, but as the first wild sunrise colors diminished I began to think about monochrome. (Of course, my camera being digital, I was capturing color images, though monochrome results were in my mind.) The brightest areas of the clouds were extremely bright, while the facing side of the tufa formations, being backlit, were very close to black. My plan was to control the bright areas in the exposure and then lift the shadows in post, just enough to hint at details on the tufa.

Are You a Threat

This blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was the first bird to show up at my feeders after I filled them one morning. You can see how warily it was checking out both me and Charlie, making sure we weren’t a threat. Blue jays aren’t grazers — they grab what they want and fly off to a safer spot. And this one had a very specific goal in mind: it wanted a peanut.

If you're enchanted by images of blue jays and other captivating corvids, dive into my photo gallery for a visual treat! Take a peek:
