I'm not going to lie to you — I'm not a nude beach b*tch. I'm barely even a naked-in-the-locker-room b*tch. I don't need to see all that.
However, as a born-and-raised Vancouverite, visiting Wreck Beach feels like a rite of passage. The famous stretch of sand near UBC is not only Vancouver's most iconic clothing-optional beach, but it's also Canada's largest nude beach.
So, despite my reservations — and my overwhelming preference for keeping my clothes on in public — I decided it was finally time to see what all the fuss was about.
From the infamous stairs and the impossible parking to the strict no-phone rule and surprisingly respectful atmosphere, here are nine things that stood out to me during my first trip to Wreck Beach.
If you've never been to Wreck Beach before, then know this — someone will offer you some down there. Maybe even for free.
Within minutes of setting up my towel, I watched vendors stroll up and down the beach selling everything from cold drinks and snacks to, well, more mind-altering products.
The hippy energy at Wreck Beach is honestly one of my favourite things about it. There's something undeniably charming about spending the afternoon in the sand with my friends, pretending to read a book, while entrepreneurs who take e-transfer wander past me.
It's part beach, part FB marketplace, and part time capsule from 1973.
You will see more seniors than influencers
I'll admit it: I had a very specific image of a nude beach in my head before I went. I imagined bronzed twenty-somethings, impossibly attractive Europeans, and at least three people filming a "day-in-my-life" TikTok.
Instead, the average age skewed much closer to "eligible for a seniors discount at White Spot."
And honestly? I loved it...

Especially now, with temperatures soaring well above 30°C and tropical nights making even light clothing feel oppressive — being naked is the most natural response imaginable. Naturism isn't just about comfort, it's about feeling genuinely at home in your own skin, free from the constraints of fabric and social convention. The body breathes, moves, and simply is — unencumbered. With at least ten more days of this heat ahead, going clothes-free isn't a luxury, it's practically a calling. Nature intended this. 🌞 🌊

Some of us grew up in cities, amongst multicultural communities in which difference was normal and folk were encouraged to embrace one another’s cultural quirks and traditions without judgement. So we celebrated a different religious or cultural holiday every other week, because we were friends with people from all parts of the world, of all religions, and sharing in celebrations and cultural moments was normalised, wherever you personally came from.
Other people grew up in more homogenous societies, communities in which the majority – if not all – of the people around you were of the same ethnic background, the same religious beliefs, and most probably came from generations of people living in the same place. Here, difference meant strangeness, and while some communities are very welcoming and happy to embrace differences, other places saw that ‘strangeness’ as a threat, something to not be curious about but to be hostile to, and reject at all costs. And what a sad place to grow up, what a sad attitude to have.
The American woman in this story has been abroad once, to Europe for her honeymoon, and she’s very proud of that fact. Her daughter even married a Spanish man, and she’s very grateful for the grandchildren that have been borne from their marriage. However, a shock revelation when she was snooping on his computer led her to reject his culture, and to reject the multicultural upbringing that the couple are giving her grandchildren.
