Using the beach-dune systems as a highway

Many beaches and dunes are allowed to be abused as roads in Australia. This is hostile to wildlife, shorebirds and pedestrians

"Associate professor Craig Styan has been looking at how the beach is used and has surveyed a number of beachgoers. He said while there was no level of driving on the beach that had zero environmental impact, it posed a difficult management question."

"It's almost a paradox … the reason for going is because it's a natural environment, but you being there potentially impacts on some of those natural values."

Mass starvation of grey-headed flying foxes and premature birth of pups

"The New South Wales independent planner has approved the biggest coalmine project to ever go before it, allowing mining to continue until 2045 at a Hunter Valley project described by climate groups as a “carbon bomb”."

Bandicoots

* Our new research shows humans have maligned bandicoots for decades, making them more vulnerable to extinction

"Tragically, since European colonisation, eight of the 15 existing bandicoot (Peramelidae) species have become threatened or gone extinct. The populations that remain have all declined in numbers due to pressures from invasive predators, such as cats and foxes, as well as habitat destruction. However, humans have also directly contributed to their decline." >>

"I'd like to see them stop killing dingoes in national parks … I think Australia should be ashamed [of that]."

"Meanwhile, there are concerns baiting and killing wild dogs could disrupt ecosystems and cause kangaroo numbers to skyrocket...When you take the dingoes away, kangaroo numbers erupt, a lot of our native animals disappear and our vegetation changes."

Broadscale clearing in NSW

'Invasive native species' "is a term unique to NSW and it's creating a legal pathway to destroy native vegetation."

"Land-clearing concerns spark call to scrap NSW invasive native species code

"NSW government data released last week showed land-clearing rates rose 16 per cent from 2023 to 2024, with nearly half of authorised native vegetation clearing carried out under the INS provisions."

"The term 'invasive native species' is meant to conjure up images of a threatening, nasty wasteland that we need to somehow improve … but in fact, it's become a backdoor method for broadscale clearing, as far as I'm concerned." Professor Eldridge >>

The spotted-tailed or tiger quoll is mainland Australia's largest carnivorous marsupial.

Conservation:
They face significant threats from habitat loss, feral foxes, and dogs.

Threats:
* loss, fragmentation and degradation of suitable quoll habitat through land clearing, change in fire patterns and logging

* loss of potential den sites such as large hollow logs

* foxes and cats which prey on quolls and also compete with them for food
feral cats can also spread diseases which affect quolls

* persecution by humans, who have often blamed quolls for the loss of stock and poultry. >>

WaterNSW criticised for ‘appalling’ decision after hundreds of turtles left to die in wetlands

"Environmental flows refer to water released by the government from dams and tributaries into rivers and ecosystems to restore their health. The Gingham watercourse is home to three turtle species, the broad-shelled turtle, the Murray River turtle and the eastern long-necked turtle."

A powerful photographic exhibition by Helen Grace titled "Justice for Violet and Bruce. Currently on display at the Campbelltown Arts Centre as part of the Biennale.

From Helen's website: "In 1976 Violet and Bruce Roberts were convicted of the murder of Eric Roberts, Violet’s husband and Bruce’s father, at Pacific Palms near Taree in regional New South Wales, after enduring years of domestic violence. The trial was short and relatively cursory but by 1980 the public outcry against the injustice of their imprisonment was spearheaded by a courageous Sydney activist group Women Behind Bars. Violet and Bruce’s release from jail on 15 October 1980 turned on the recognition of the defence of provocation in cases of murder where there had been long-term domestic violence and it led to changes in the New South Wales Crimes Act."
