I drove from Amarillo, Texas to our place in rural northeast New Mexico yesterday afternoon. Conditions started out completely cloudy, but by the time I was climbing out of the mesalands and back onto the high plains - firmly in the middle of nowhere - the clouds started to break up. Looking back down at the mesalands, I saw the light and shadow creating interesting patterns and giving this scene a depth it usually lacks. I parked at the top of the climb, and I walked back a ways to be able to photograph the scene from the roadside. - Harding County, New Mexico, USA #NewMexico #americanwest #americansouthwest #nature #landscape #mesa #mesalands #rural #shadows #ranch #outdoors #Fujifilm #Tamron

@shifter And all this time I thought I was breaking the law. 🤔 😆 #NewMexico

TBT Late Afternoon Diablo Canyon Oil on Canvas 48" x 72"
This was a commission, and my first oil painting, from a photograph I took at Diablo Canyon 8 years ago today. I had been working almost exclusively in watercolor and some acrylic before this, but the collector wanted a 4' x 6' painting, and my friend the excellent painter Madison Cawein suggested I try oils.

First horned #lizard (aka "horny toad") of the season -- a fairly big guy, and such beautiful colors! I don't think I've ever seen colors like that on a horned lizard before.

Tularosa Basin and White Sands National Park
Apache Point, Sunspot, NM

@KrajciTom Somewhere near your neck of the woods, I believe. I was up looking at the observatories that day ~10 years ago.

Movie set cabin at Valles Caldera, NM — built for Ron Howard’s “The Missing” (2003) with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett. Still standing, still convincing.

7. ART (rapid transit) bus no 766 red line bus from downtown Albuquerque station near the Amtrak station.

Seems like their buses are fare-free.

Was kind of hard to find the bus stop (poor signage, closed sidewalks, no pedestrian crossing signs..) but I made it.

Fun fact: I don’t know any about NM or Albuquerque or transit here. Will update when I find out more

The bus is almost exactly the same as the AC Transit 1T in Oakland

Gil Kerley's shop, Quirky Books in Albuquerque, N.M., became a haven for unhoused people. His neighbors were not happy. Alexander Sammon writes for @Slate about the complicated rise and fall of the Quirky camp. "I pressed Gil one more time on what possibly could’ve motivated him to do this, to risk his store and his neighbors’ stores too for people he barely knew. 'I just believe you have to help people at the bottom,' he said. I believe he believed that," Sammon concludes.

White-crowned Sparrow
Alameda, NM

There was a loud chorus of white-crowns in the quince thicket this morning. I suspect they will move north for the season early this year.

I love the sign near the bottom of the Nail Trail. Supposedly the name comes from a militant hiker long ago who spread nails on the trail to discourage bikes. Fortunately I don't see much of that attitude these days: most trail users here are friendly. I've never encountered a bike on the Nail Trail, and I've only walked it myself; it doesn't strike me as a good bike trail (very steep, very rocky in places), but I guess some advanced riders like it.

Quince in Bloom

Should have taken pictures days ago, but was just too lazy, so these are a bit past prime. This is only about an eighth of the whole thicket. Years past there were not even a fraction of this number of blooms and the birds ate most of those. Maybe there will be fruit this year.

Voilà! The secret to my corned beef! It contains, alongside more traditional ingredients, things we we’ve harvested ourselves and imported from as far away as #NewMexico and #China!

I usually include at least one ingredient brought back from our travels over the previous year, but this has been a weird one and the only place we went was… #Ireland. (I do have a delicious bbq sauce I got in Belfast, but that doesn’t really fit.) #PaddysDay

Nine states had their warmest winter ever recorded

In addition to a lack of snowfall compared to the historical average, these nine states had their warmest year on record.

By Jesse Ferrell, Mar 11, 2026

"Winter barely showed up the way it usually does for millions of people from #Oregon to #Texas. Nine states logged their warmest meteorological winter on record, defined as Dec. 1 through the end of February. These dates are agreed upon by meteorologists for record-keeping and comparison purposes, but the historical average dates of the lowest temperatures varies from city to city.

"NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, which has records back to 1895, said this winter was the warmest in Oregon, #Nevada, #Arizona, #Utah, #Wyoming, #Colorado, #NewMexico, Texas and #Oklahoma."
