“Insects are helping everything else work as part of intricate, coevolved systems. You can’t just pull individual organisms from ecosystems and expect everything to keep going,” says Alex Wild, curator of entomology at the University of Texas Biodiversity Collections.

So happy to see the Draba every spring. They were one of the first “micro” plants I noticed six years ago in my naturalist infancy, an early reward for looking closer

I'm working on lots of cool projects at the moment with some super talented people. #ForestGarden #FoodForest #wildlife tower with a local artist.

This is a sketch of a Tŵr Gwyllt (Wildlife Tower) that the artist is currently working on, and I'd like to adapt the design for edible perennials and #NativePlants, as well as habitat

March 18, 2026. Field notes. The wind and heavy snow of the weekend covers native plants. This round headed bush clover stem is sturdy, often lasting two winters. This stem will return to the upright position as the snow melts. These plants have lovely winter color and striking seed heads. The seeds are attractive, they are small legumes. #minnesota, #nativeplants, #pollinators, #megafauna, #Zone4b

FOR THE BIRDS

🐦‍⬛ Non-native trees are commonly used in urban settings, but a new study out of Sweden finds that native trees provide more resources and are preferred by urban birds.

🐛 Another study out of the University of Glasgow shows that common woodland birds produce more chicks when surrounded by a greater abundance of native tree foliage.

There’s a lot of anti-gardening/GYO discourse online right now. It seems to be a reaction against the no-lawn movement. Their “reasoning” is that gardens use more water than grass.

It all depends on what plants you grow. #NativePlants do not require any more water than typical rainfall.

So here is a comprehensive list of edible native plants to southeast/mid-Atlantic zone 7-9. Let me know if I missed any. 💚

One of the photographic "treasures" that I hunt (well, not really, just occasionally stumble upon) are plants that express unusual colors when flowering. 😀

Here's an Early Onion (Allium praecox) with entirely white flowers (normally white and pink) that I found recently on a local trail.

I'm working on creating a native plant area along the side of our driveway. Included in the planting is red-flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum). It's beginning to bloom now, giving Anna's hummingbirds a boost. #nature #photography #botany #nativeplants #flowers #spring

1 of the joys of keeping a Perpetual Journal is seeing what happened this week in previous years. Here’s my PJ art of Tucson nature observations 1, 2 & 3 years ago this week. In ‘23 we got snow. In ‘26 the temp’s been over 90°!

The buttercups are out! Right where I was expecting them to be. Spring is coming!

The buttercups should emerge soon. Need to make a visit to the hilly part of my favorite park tomorrow to check. The first native flowers of the year

I am now officially an iNaturalist ambassador 👨‍🌾🕵️‍♂️🪿🍄🐝🌻

My first project is organizing a BioBlitz (people come together at a place and identify all the living beings they can find) for the marsh near my apartment.

It's happening on April 25th to coincide with the City Nature Challenge.

It will be co-lead with Ryan Bartlett, a local native bee expert, who'll be bringing fun gear to safely catch insects and ID them.

Our findings will lay the groundwork for more intentional stewardship of that land.

Native San Diego plant #422 in my ever-growing collection: Eremothera refracta.

Commonly known as Narrow-leaved Primrose, Narrowleaf Suncup, here it is seen growing out of granitic gravel in a wash in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.

In spring 2023, I stepped outside just minutes after the lawn had been sprayed and saw a beautiful American robin pulling worms from the same grass.
In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. That afternoon, I canceled the lawn service. Since then — and for as long as I own this property-he will be safe in my yard.
