I’m starting to think that January–February is my favorite time of the year in the fjells. Sure, there are only a couple of hours of light each day, especially in January. But the light has so much variety, from very delicate and subtle to more dramatic. This example is from our February 2026 ski tour to Pältsan.

Unfrozen spot in a river we used to stalk Rock Ptarmigans. You need to be aware of these spots even in the coldest months in Lapland. Even a small stream can stop water from freezing or keep the ice weak.

Bárrás rising from the mist. Bárrás was visible for pretty much our whole ski tour, with few exceptions. This was nice as it allowed me to take photos of it in different lighting and weather conditions. It is a very beautiful fjell.

On the drive to Lapland I spotted the first grouse of the season. The warm weather clearly did its job.

The very grand Isdalen valley on the day we tried to descend into it. The slopes down into the valley looked too steep and icy to ski with pulkas, and with my friend’s limited ski touring experience we decided to turn back. On the map the terrain looks quite different, but what it never shows is how the snow has accumulated on the slopes or how icy they actually are.

It was the first of may 2025 when we got a phone call. We should come that same day back to the village to visite a house. Ok... We rented another car, drove to Meltosjärvi and visited a green farmhouse. It was full of stuff and standing there unused since 16 years. But we knew, this is it! This has potential!

On the foot of the Pältsän mountain range. We got lost in thick mist on our way to Pältsähytta, a seasonally manned wilderness hut, and ended up on the slopes of Lássávárri instead. It turned out to be a lucky mistake, as the spot was beautiful and we spent two nights there enjoying the view, scouting the area, and photographing rock ptarmigans, which were everywhere.

We were caught in this heavy winter storm during our ski tour to Pältsän, and it raged for two nights. I might not be the best at reading weather patterns from clouds or wind, but this time my gut feeling was right. I told my friend we were not going any further, even though we still had plenty of daylight left. We set up camp, and about an hour later heavy gusts and snowfall hit us and did not let up for two nights.

On my way back south from our two week hike to Pältsän across Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Quite an eventful ski tour with blizzards, freezing temperatures dropping below -28 °C, cozy moments at a wilderness hut, and some beginner gear problems. All in all it was very much a success, even though we did not manage to complete much of our planned route. I will try to upload some photos and videos in the coming weeks.

Yours truly pitching the tent, or more accurately shoveling snow around the base to stormproof it. The tent is a Hilleberg Kaitum 3 GT, a proper four season tent, but it does lack extended snow flaps on the fly for anchoring in deep snow. Luckily it has been enough to build a low wall of snow against it and make sure all the pole ends are well buried.

I’ve posted a few sunset photos from the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area already, but I could not resist sharing this one. I am also running out of retouched photos since I have not had time to go through them yet 😅 This one brings back memories and a strong feeling of calm and solitude. Though there was a reindeer herder who came by a few times during our ski tour to check that we were okay. I really like Lappish people. Easy going, kind, and you can always count on their help.

Getting really busy with packing and prepping for the upcoming ski tour. I probably will not have much time to upload new photos in the coming week, and then it will be complete silence for two weeks while I am out in the wild. Anyway, I tried black and white settings on this photo I posted earlier and I am very happy with the result. Too bad the phone screen is so small, this looks much better on a big screen.

Going under one of the reindeer fences found all over Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Lapland. Sometimes there are gates, but often you have to find a spot where the fence does not quite touch the ground and just crawl under. These same kinds of fences also run along almost the entire Finnish Norwegian border. In a past post about a similar situation I claimed that only Nordic citizens can cross the border like this, but I was wrong. All citizens of Schengen countries are allowed to do so.
