Google obviously knows how user unfriendly it is to enable developer mode and how this will effectively make it impossible for the vast majority of non-technical users to access any third party app stores. This is as malicious as malicious compliance to EU law goes. I cannot think of a more aggressive roadblock they could have put up, even forcing some to choose between third party app stores like #FDroid or #IzzyOnDroid and banking apps.

There is no doubt about it, this is not about safety.

* 3 because of not adhering to the "first basic rule": to build the APK from the tagged commit 🙈
* 2 because of failed libraryStripping (so we needed to find the matching NDK and install that for them
* 1 not yet fixed as we could not yet figure the cause

Hopefully this will give #FOSS devs an incentive to shift app development to #mobilelinux if Google pushes ahead with this.

There ARE alternatives. I'm fully aware that they are, for the most part, not prime time ready, but they DO exist, and they've come a long way.

Maybe Google doing this will be a blessing in disguise, as it may just be what's needed to give #linuxphones a push.

I, for one, will switch to one form of mobile Linux or another, if Obtainium/F-Droid/IzzyOnDroid are killed off by this.

Current Google IzzyOnDroid block status: block still ungoing even though Google literally doesn't list a single "suspicious" URL anymore after we made the false positives unreachable for them.

This is ridiculous. 5 days of almost 1300 clean FOSS apps being blocked by Google for "malware" that doesn't exist. Zero proof, zero accountability, zero recourse.

IzzyOnDroid is clean and we work hard to keep it that way.

Google is now marking EVERY SINGLE APK at our repository as "Malware site issue". Congrats, "Safe" browsing.

Of course there is not a single malware there, everything is scanned multiple times. And I bet they excluded *.google.com from their scan or the entire PlayStore would be red by now, too…

We are receiving reports that Google flags our repo as "having dangerous apps" or being a "dangerous site" – texts being very vague, no proof given (nor did they inform us). They also link to a page they call "Transparency Report" – which is of the same vagueness, but definitely not transparent (transparencyreport.google.com/…)
