The side on shot reveals its bird like face with and eye and two little palps that resemble a canary's beak. Its wings are held vertically but slightly open in a V shape. Overhead shot of small 1.25cm arrowhead shaped moth on a finger. It has a velvety or brocade appearance in plain silvery grey on the top half and a more intricately patterned bottom half. The main feature of the bottom half is a silvery grey heart shape in the centre with one half of the heart on each wing, so would split if the wings opened. Surrounding the heart, left, right and above are variations of brown smears and splodges with hints of gingery-gold. There are also three white stigmata on each wing. Above the heart is a thin white shuttle or dart shaped streak. Below this and slightly more towards the outer wing edge is a tiny tear-drop shape. Then, in the bottom half, either side of the heart is a white arch/crescent/kidney-shape. The very end of the wings are chequered in white and brown

This #linocut block print shows 3 fireflies (Photinus pyralis, the common eastern firefly or big dipper firefly) in a field against the night sky. These bioluminescent insects are the most common firefly in N America, & they use the light organ on their abdomen to signal potential mates leaving their tell-tale trail of a j-shaped flash pattern. Hence the common name “big dipper firefly”.
