Happy to get this close shot of a Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) at Bidadari Park, Singapore on 6 Dec 2025. A common bird in urban and forest areas, I usually only see it from a distance: but not this time.

My record shots of the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) currently residing at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on 9 Nov 2025. It was staying inside the forest, so not many opportunities to get shots. Still, happy to be able to glimpse a wild bird that has not been seen in Singapore for over a century. 🙂

I'm taking my time transferring my observations from #inaturalist to #observationorg

I'm rather enjoying the slow pace. I get to know the new platform step by step and I come across observations I had forgotten about, like this Ameles pectini.

If I didn't know it by the snow outside, I'd know northern winter was setting in based on the increase in IDs for rarer species and multiple IDs for less-popular taxa from the same experts in a day on #iNaturalist

A cute and friendly endangered tuna (#Anguilla dieffenbachii) New Zealand Longfin Eel sunbathing in a mountain river in the Kaimai ranges. Fellow trapper spotted this one as we were crossing the river.

Suppose #iNaturalist fully enshittifies (and so do all other similar #wildlife ID apps), embracing LLMs to replace human IDs with slop text, or otherwise turning evil.

What trustworthy resources would you use to identify your favorite taxa instead?

I especially welcome book / field guide recommendations, since maintaining reality-based print libraries seems essential in this historical moment, but I'm open to whatever else you might suggest.

I find juvenile Atlantic Tripletails *(Lobotes surinamensis)* to be rather amusing. In most cases, a fish lying on its side on the surface of the water is not in good health, but the ocean sunfish will do that to entice birds to remove parasites from them. This fish was only about 6 inches long though, so I suspect that in this species the behavior is a form of camouflage-- perhaps mimicking dead leaves-- or perhaps temperature regulation, but I couldn't find anything definitive.

NEWS FLASH: We have CLAMS living on campus!

As part of last week's Sustainability Week at #LincolnUniversityNZ, our freshwater ecology tutor Elysia Harcombe did some kick sampling along a farm ditch. Yes, she found clams!

It's the first record on #iNaturalist of clams on campus, or anywhere in Lincoln (and we've been kick sampling in the Liffey Stream through Lincoln for several years in my biodiversity class).

There are records of some clams living in the Yarrs Lagoon wetland reserve to the south of campus, but that's about 3 km to the south (which is downstream and is not connected to campus).

A Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha) spotted at Pasir Ris Park, Singapore on 21 Sept 2025. An uncommon resident (with Near Threatened status), and the centre of attention of birders who took turns taking shots. The bird was calm and probably wondering at all the fuss.

A Finlayson's Squirrel (Callosciurus finlaysonii) spotted at Bidadari Park, Singapore on 16 Sept 2025. This individual seemed to be curious about the human taking shots of it and stayed on the branch for a while.

This is an introduced species and still mostly confined to this park in Singapore.

The male and female Asian Fairy-Bluebird (Irena puella) spotted at Thomson Nature Park, Singapore on 17 Aug 2025. The male's bright blue feathers caught my eye while I was taking shots of another organism, and I quickly switched to get these shots.

These birds are uncommon resident birds and usually stay in the forest.

Between #GiveUpGitHub and #iNaturalist jumping the "AI" shark, I'm extra grateful for infrastructures like @Codeberg that have democratic governance mechanisms to give contributors a real vote and power in decision making.

I hope more folks use those opportunities to find infrastructures that they can actually co-own, instead of wasting time & energy in dictatorial platforms that at best "make the community feel heard" (notice the subtle difference between being heard and feeling heard).

A male Horsfield's Baron (Tanaecia iapis) spotted at the Lornie Park Connector, Singapore on 2 Feb 2025. The contrast between the bright blue border and the rest of the dark butterfly can make it a challenge to get the exposure correct.

While the male is distinctive, the female is brown and easily mistaken for another species of Baron.

Last year I wrote a paper on how "GenAI" is a risk for #citizenscience (it being an academic paper it's still slowly dying in review). One of the points was that using "AI" devalues the contributions made by human volunteers, leading to contributors (rightfully) disengaging.

Yesterday, #inaturalist announced an "AI"-partnership with Google, and unsurprisingly that's exactly the backlash they got…
