Using the beach-dune systems as a highway

Many beaches and dunes are allowed to be abused as roads in Australia. This is hostile to wildlife, shorebirds and pedestrians

"Associate professor Craig Styan has been looking at how the beach is used and has surveyed a number of beachgoers. He said while there was no level of driving on the beach that had zero environmental impact, it posed a difficult management question."

"It's almost a paradox … the reason for going is because it's a natural environment, but you being there potentially impacts on some of those natural values."

Pesticide exposure at work may increase motor neurone disease risk – new study

"A new study, published today, has found that being exposed to pesticide at work can increase the risk of developing ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) by 61–71%. The study brings together the findings of eight other studies – but not all of them assess risk in the same way. Here’s why we need to interpret the findings with caution....Overall, the study supports the case that being exposed to pesticide at work increases your risk of developing ALS." >>

Broadscale clearing in NSW

'Invasive native species' "is a term unique to NSW and it's creating a legal pathway to destroy native vegetation."

"Land-clearing concerns spark call to scrap NSW invasive native species code
It has released a report showing more than 3.2 million hectares of native vegetation in NSW are approved for land clearing under the INS code."

"NSW government data released last week showed land-clearing rates rose 16 per cent from 2023 to 2024, with nearly half of authorised native vegetation clearing carried out under the INS provisions."

"The term 'invasive native species' is meant to conjure up images of a threatening, nasty wasteland that we need to somehow improve … but in fact, it's become a backdoor method for broadscale clearing, as far as I'm concerned." Professor Eldridge >>

No roaming cats, more native wildlife.
Successful cat trapping effort leads to spike in Tasmanian devil population

"A dedicated group of Landcare volunteers is behind a five-year feral cat trapping program that has led to an increase in native animals and birdlife in the area. In Australia the holiday season is the season to use petrol gardening equipment all day, every day. Pythons, lizards, frogs and insects are simply shredded and mulched alive.

Robotic lawn mowers and fossil fuel gardening tools are shredding wildlife

"Scientists analyzed 370 documented cases of hedgehogs being injured (cut) by electric gardening tools in Germany. Almost half of the hedgehogs found ... did not survive the injuries.
