Whereas the purple and blue I really quite like! #HandSpinning 🧶
Not quite sure what to think of this one… wasn’t expecting the blue to have quite so much green in it. #HandSpinning

From seed to yarn. What a special process. It’s easy to take for granted the amount of processing and labor required for even the most basic item you casually use in the course of your day. Consider toilet paper, for example 😂
I finished plying some yarn last night which is the end of my process—except now I’m considering using the yarn for #weaving. I’m not sure why it hadn’t occurred to me before because I collect woven textiles and love the craft. #FiberArts #Fibers #HandSpinning #Spinning
Today's #FinishOrFrogAlong Q&A:
What work in progress are you most excited about right now? Tell us about it. If you only have one WIP tell us about that one! If you have more than one - why is this one the most compelling right now? What makes it interesting or exciting for you?

I spun an entire 4 oz (113 g) bump today, which isn't really saying much until you see that I've spun it pretty fine. #HandSpinning

What’s your typical (or preferred) way of working through a project? Go with the answer that resonates with you the most even if you sometimes do other things.
Comment with - why do you like working that way? When or why do you make exceptions?
- Straight through, minimal detours (40%, 6 votes)
- Some side quests / other crafts or projects (33%, 5 votes)
- Take pauses or breaks, sometimes long ones (26%, 4 votes)
- Something else (please comment) (0%, 0 votes)
Today’s #FinishOrFrogAlong Q&A!
How do you store your WIPs?
Physical storage and organization of projects is a real challenge. Some of you have already said you keep projects out where they can be seen - others referred to their Pile of Shame (or Pile of Undying Hope) or labeled project bags. Plus different crafts call for different solutions. What works for you?

- Pre-school (1 to 5 years) (44%, 13 votes)
- School Age (6 to 17 years) (20%, 6 votes)
- Adulting (18+ years) (17%, 5 votes)
I store all my patterns in GoodNotes. The primary reason for that is how easy it is to find things there. GoodNotes lets me put everything in folders of my choice -- but, most importantly, has excellent search of PDFs and handwriting. So as long as I kind of vaguely remember a word that might appear in a pattern, I can find it. And, I can edit / scribble / add notes to patterns easily.

Today’s #FinishOrFrogAlong Q&A: What do you use, if anything, to keep track of your WIPs? Notebook, project tags, software, knitCompanion, Ravelry, something else? Why or why not?

Edit: if you’re on Ravelry feel free to share your profile link if you’re comfortable doing so!
My first "finished" project for #FinishOrFrogAlong ! I gave all my heritage breed sampler spins from #TourDeFleece2026 a wash and a good thwacking, then hung them out to dry. I'm still impressed by the variability in wool fibers AND how they turned out regardless.
They are "wet finished" but I still need to re-measure yardage and wind them into cakes so I can knit swatches.
Details on each in following posts: 🧵
Hello everyone! Welcome to the first poll of this year’s #FinishOrFrogAlong. Fun to see how answers change over time!
How many WIPs (works in progress) do you have?
Answer however you think of it - primary craft / all crafts / whatever you thought of when you read it.
Comment with your WIP philosophy - how do you think about your number of WIPs?

Spun the first braid, from the fold. And in my usual not too tidy way of filling a bobbin.
When I start a new bobbin I usually pay attention and slide the hook regularly along to fill it evenly. But when the bobbin is about half full the moving has to happen less frequently and I get in the zone, only realizing how much I've spun when the uptake gets weak. Which is way too late for a nicely filled bobbin.
First thing to decide: how do I want to spin this. The way the fiber is structured, it is best suited for worsted spinning, fine singles and then ply them.
But that is my default spin - it gets a bit boring.
So I'm going to try two different approaches here. The purple-turquoise one I will spin from the fold, the other one with a low ratio and a rather high uptake just end-to-end. Both will be a 2-ply. Let's see, how the yarns differ.
Next spinning projects.
Last year on vacation I visited a wonderful fiber arts shop that has a great selection of spinning fiber. Among other things they have John Arbon - and of course I had to get some.
Two braids of Appledore in the color ways Spicy Pippin and Bitter Ellis, 100 g each (I forgot to take a picture before starting to spin off over of them)
Let's see what they will turn into
@handspinning @fiberarts #handspinning #fiberarts
The shop was Stiel Wolwerkplaats near Almelo, NL
First bobbin filled. The fiber consists of two layers - one is silk or a silk-merino blend, the other just merino. This is the first layer, spun very finely. I'll spin the second layer onto another bobbin and then ply both together.
Tour de Fleece has officially ended, but I'm still in the mood for spinning, so I searched through my fiber stash and found another two of the the tops, that I've spun up here troet.cafe/@FanCityKnits/11676…
This time I'm going to ply the two layers of each top together.
All three braids are spun and I plied the first two. I didn't spin as consistently as I thought, the first one is about 165 m pre washing, the other one is about 195 m - if I did my counting correctly.
And now I need a way how to chain ply without cutting into my finger. My left pointer finger has a tiny cut from pulling the loop back against the tension on lazy Kate and wheel.
First bobbin of singles filled, first braid spun up.
It's surprising how much faster a bobbin fills when you don't try to spin as done as possible (which is my default most of the time).
The fiber drafts like a dream - BFL is a great breed.
Tour de fleece part 3
3 braids of Bluefaced Leicester, I'm spinning it a bit thicker than usual and then chain ply to keep the color sequences.
At least that's the plan.

was jonesing for a proper bouclé spin after yesterday's whoopsie, so I pulled out a trash batt and made sixty yards of sheepy silliness.
I'll make something pretty tomorrow.
I forgot to take pictures during the spinning (mostly because I usually spun in the evenings when there's horrible light), and now it's already plied and off the bobbin.
Looks like a mess at this stage, because one of the singles is spun in ply direction so it's heavily overplied and thus making all those curls and pigtails. It's insanely springy yarn.
Let's see how it behaves after washing and a good thwacking
Next #tourDeFleece2026 project - sock yarn
This braid is 70% corriedale and 30% viscose. I want to make a 3-ply yarn with two of the singles spun in S and one in Z and then everything plied Z. I've used this technique many years ago and quite like the result
After unbraiding I wanted to split lengthwise into 3 parts - very not easy to get 3 pieces that are more or less the same weight. But it has dye sequences that allow to split it in 3 equal pieces
#goodmorning it's #tourDeFleece2026 .
It's the first time I participate, because it's such a busy time of the year.
My goal is to work every day on Lillis one year fleece and turn it into three ply sock yarn.
All singles spun. The first picture shows both singles from each spiral next to each other, the second picture are mix and match between all colors.
I'm not sure about plying yet.
1. Chain ply each bobbin, leaving me with six distinct skeins, everyone about 50 g and probably (light) fingering weight
2. 2ply the "matching" singles - 3 skeins, each about 100 g, lace weight
3. Mix and match 2ply - creating a sort of fade
And another one finished
This is the silk merino layer from the top spiral from the past above.
Colors aren't accurate but I love the light at this time of day.
It's so hot these days I stay most of the day inside because there is an AC and outside it's close to 40° C. There are trees and shade but that only helps that much. At least it's not too humid so there's that.
Anyway: lots of time to spin.
Having fun sampling the Schwarznase lamb fleece. Quite a different beast than the Border Leicester I'm also working on. High micron but very silky and super long staple. Easy to comb except when there's wind, so I moved inside after one pass. Still think it may work for socks. Perhaps too prickly.

I got back to spinning on my espinner (Zeniba, an Daedalus Starling) and knocked out a project pretty quickly due to relentless focus on getting it done over the last few days. The colors are Indulgent Eton Mess (the pink one) and Rhubarb Crumble (white with speckles of pink, purple, orange). I did “intuitive” spinning with it for whatever weight it wanted to be, and it turned out roughly worsted/Aran weight in a two ply. No idea what I’ll make with it. #HandSpinning #textilearts #fiberarts
If anyone is interested: this was the fiber the yarn is spun from.
Corriedale in natural grey, kettle dyed with lots of teal and a bit of rust. The yarn was not braided for the dying process, only afterwards. Spun end to end and then chain plied. It actually has quite some variation between thick and thin - between fingering and heavy sportweight, I'd guess.
This is an image of my current project in hank form but before finishing. It is a Corriedale, merino, silk, tweed blend #handspinning #fiberarts
(Edited to correct terminology)
I’m in the process of finishing up another spinning project. It’s soaking and then will have a snap and dry. It’s 300 loops @ 2 yds right now. I’m curious how much shrinkage there will be. What should I do to check the new yardage? (See first comment for photo)
- Skein it up fresh and count the new # of loops (100%, 7 votes)
- Unwind one loop and measure its new length (0%, 0 votes)
- Something else (please comment) (0%, 0 votes)
It’s so hideous, I love it 😁

Question: I want more (fiber)arts and beauty in my timeline as a counterweight to all the sad and bad stuff. Currently I follow quite a few hashtags, but not enough. Any recommendations for more?

Look what came in the mail! New fiber from a stash trade with @madgeface
She sent me this rainbow box of (40% Merino / 40% Rayon / 15% Cultivated Silk / 5% Tussah Silk) from The Fiberists and this huuuuuge bag of (80% Merino / 20% Cultivated Silk) from Lambspun
I already have project ideas 😍
I got my fiber advent a few days ago (late, since I didn’t order until Dec 1) and I’ve been desperately spinning to try to catch up with the real date. This is from Blue Savannah in Idaho and is a blend of Haunui wool and Mulberry Silk. It’s fun to spin and the sheen is fantastic. 20 g each day. Plan is to spin it up as singles one right after another and chain ply.
This is days 1 and 2.
