This is a Common Murre, also known as a Guillemot. It is a regular sight here along the Redwood Coast in northern California. We have a lot of rocky coastline that creates great areas for flocks to perch.
I will admit this bird was new to me, having just moved to the region a year ago. When I went to draw it, it seemed like a weird cross between a seagull and a penguin... Maybe that's just in my head, but wow I can see similarities to both species!
All of my birds are done by hand in Procreate on my iPad Pro. I do not use any generative AI assistance nonsense--I don't believe in it and I'm adamantly opposed to it. I use my art to put on my own greeting cards which I print at my own studio and sell locally. I don't mass-manufacture them, and endeavor to make everything I do as "Handmade, Human-Made, Humboldt Made" as I can.
