I'm using vim with a texinfo plugin to write texinfo files.

This is the first time that I'm writing info files (texinfo > info), so I need the texinfo reference file to look at,

When I first looked at info files, years ago, I didn't like them - I thought thet they should be just like html files; I assumed that they were written before the web existed.

Recently though, because I need to organise a whole bundel of notes covering a wide range of topics, I've realised that html wouldn't do the job, but info would --- note, texinfo, as well creating info files, can also create html files as well.

The standaone info reader can split the screen which is handy when reading docs, but it is also more flexible by allowing including files and traversing to other documents and returning, searching and many other things which I didn't realise until recently.

Of course it isn't well knon or popular, but it is alive well --- as you can see by the mailing list:

The plugin looks the same as the stand alone info reader BUT you navigate using commands for each step.
So though it looks the same and you can move the cursor down to a menu item, when you hit enter nothing happens - you have to enter the :Menu menuitem command.

Emacs has a special mode for reading info documentation - but it can't split the screen - or so I have read.

Through a set of happy coincidences, I managed to get a job at Red Hat in the desktop team, and because accessibility was in the times of the reorg an important thing, a tools and accessibility team actually was created. It is quite a small team, and the majority of people on it do not have work time to do anything with accessibility (we're maintaining some of the Gnome apps, we do RHEL packaging, testing etc.).

However, I am working on the accessibility related things every day, so don't be afraid to ask something, mention your issues, and such.

Personally, in terms of distributions, I use GNome on Arch (personal laptop) and Fedora (work laptop), so I have the most experience with these setups, but I definitely used Mate, and tried Kde for some time as well.

And, that's it for now. "

So, a small team, that barely has time to do what the team is about. This is really sad. This is what people with disabilities get from one of the biggest Linux companies there is.

How We Volunteered for Digital Slavery

Once upon a time, software was free — not in the “free trial” sense, but actually free.
It lived in the halls of universities, passed between curious minds on floppy disks, shared in the spirit of collaboration and discovery. Hardware was the business; software was the art.

Then came a young man named Bill Gates. Fueled by BASIC and caffeine, he learned to code thanks to that culture of openness — and then, he turned freedom into monopoly. Gates dropped out of Harvard, founded Microsoft, and declared that software would no longer be shared; it would be sold. The age of commercial code had begun.

Microsoft’s first weapon was MS-DOS, a text-based operating system that quietly took over the newborn PC world through IBM’s early machines. Then came Windows, the glossy illusion — a friendly graphical interface that promised empowerment while locking users into Microsoft’s walled garden.

Like a corporate version of The Godfather, Microsoft “made offers” competitors couldn’t refuse. DR-DOS? Made intentionally incompatible. Linux? Targeted in internal memos. Internet Explorer? Forced onto every desktop “for your convenience.” The result: a near-total monopoly achieved not by innovation alone, but by control, coercion, and corporate muscle.

Fast forward to today. Microsoft’s empire no longer needs to hide its power — it runs your computer, your documents, your identity. Telemetry, the friendly name for mass surveillance, quietly records how you use your device. With Windows 11, you can’t even log in without a Microsoft account — the digital equivalent of Big Brother’s stamp of approval. Imagine Orwell’s 1984 rewritten for the 21st century: Winston Smith doesn’t fear the telescreen anymore. He bought it, installed it, and clicked “I agree.” Even students are being tracked through Microsoft Office. Their learning curves analyzed. Their data stored. Their digital lives quantified — all under the illusion of “productivity.”

Steve Ballmer once called Linux “a cancer.” But history, ever fond of irony, flipped the metaphor: Microsoft became the cancer instead — feeding on the open-source world it once despised. Today, Windows happily integrates Linux as a feature, commodifying the very freedom it tried to destroy. Microsoft didn’t defeat open source; it absorbed it. Like the Borg. Like the Matrix. Like capitalism always does.

Meanwhile, the cost of this corporate control extends far beyond money. Windows 11’s unnecessary hardware requirements have already forced millions of functional computers into landfills — a quiet environmental catastrophe disguised as an “upgrade.” The planet pays for your shiny new taskbar.

The illusion of control doesn’t stop at your desktop. As Edward Snowden revealed, Microsoft has shared user data with the NSA — turning your operating system into a global surveillance node. When the International Criminal Court made decisions the U.S. didn’t like, its staff found their Microsoft email access revoked. That’s not science fiction. That’s administrative reality. And it could happen to anyone. We once feared governments might use technology to control us. Instead, we let corporations do it — and we pay a monthly subscription for the privilege.

But not all hope is lost. There’s still the red pill — Linux. It’s not perfect, but it’s free, open, and community-driven. No forced logins, no corporate backdoors, no hidden surveillance. Just software built by people, for people. Switching to Linux isn’t rebellion for rebellion’s sake. It’s a vote — for transparency, for sustainability, for democracy. The blue screen of illusion can still be escaped.

All it takes is the courage to press “uninstall.”

I have something else to be thankful for today. At this moment in time I am busy restoring functionality on systems so that I will be able to resume important remote tasks, which shall enable me to restore the level that I am used to, when it comes down to actual value of goods

This work is highly specialized and needs a set of computing systems, communication systems which use GSM messaging systems and other means of signalling, in order to properly Act, monitor react and deploy the remote systems, of which a set of those are managed deployed monitored and configured through Proxmox.

@gyptazy has made incredibly wonderful contributions to the community of Open Source and I'm specifically highlighting his work in for example the great Proxmox load balancer.

Through the Work Of Him and other hundreds to thousands nameless Open Source coders, programmers en hackers am I able to do this work.

I am fortunate enough to have virtually met him here on the FediVerse through a beautiful forward that @stefano has made.

Without the work of this incredible people none of this would have been possible. I would be sitting watching this beautiful scenery that I would have made myself with props

There would not be any Open Source Operating System driving the displays.
