Hola folks. I've been on Mastodon since 2022, new on this server as my old one is closing down. I’m a London based children’s author and graphic novelist. 🦇 NEW: A recent #Nature study analyzed #genomes from 103 bat species across all 21 living families, plus physical traits from dozens of species and #fossils.

The results place bat origins in #Europe around 65 million years ago, with later spread to #Africa, #Asia, the Americas and #Australia. The timeline for #echolocation’s emergence is still unsolved.

☄️ NEW: About 66 mil. years ago a #space #rock struck near #Mexico’s #Yucatán Peninsula, leaving a thin global clay layer as its only trace.

High-precision #nickel #isotope measurements identify the impactor as a #CO #chondrite, an unusually rare carbonaceous #meteorite. Its low #sulfur content suggests airborne fine debris, not sulfur, may have caused the #extinction.

🦖 NEW: A team of paleontologists discovered the first known trackway from an adult T. rex in #NorthDakota’s #HellCreek Formation.

The four three-toed prints span approximately 7 m (23 ft) with a 4 m (13 ft) stride, suggesting the #dinosaur walked at about 7 km/h (4.5 mph). The finding, dated to 66.5 million years ago, provides rare behavioral evidence of how the apex predator moved across landscapes.

“An exceptionally preserved fossilized tooth belonging to an ancient Pacific mastodon (Mammut pacificus) was recently discovered in a Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) preserve in San Mateo County.

The fossil was discovered in a creek bed by geomorphologist Brigid Lynch. What initially appeared to be an oddly shaped rock was later confirmed by palaeontologists to be an intact, adult Pacific mastodon molar.”

🪶 NEW: A cherry-sized nodule found in #Montana’s #HellCreek Formation held a 66-million-year-old feather, the best ever preserved from the age of #dinosaurs.

Researchers concluded it came from an aquatic diving bird, likely eaten by a large #predator whose fossilized dung encased it along with #fish scales and bone fragments. The team says #feather insulation may have helped some #birds survive the #asteroid impact.

‘A pioneering fossil hunter who was one of the first women to be employed by the Natural History Museum has been recognised with a national blue plaque.

Dorothea Bate, who died in 1951 aged 72, "transformed our understanding of prehistoric animals and ancient environments" through her research, Historic England said.’

🦗 NEW: Scientists reconstructed likely calls from 20 fossilized #insects representing nine #Jurassic species found in Inner #Mongolia and #China.

Most produced low-frequency #sounds similar to modern #crickets, while Sigmaboilus peregrinus may have chirped at 20-22 kHz. The #findings suggest ultrasonic #communication existed before #bats and may have evolved in response to several #predators.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦗🪐 A 324-million-year-old fossil from West #Texas, collected in 1985 and shelved in a #museum drawer for decades, was recently reexamined under polarized light and identified as "Chosha praecursor", an #insect ancestor with 24 legs. Nine pairs of paddle-like limbs may have helped it swim or scuttle through shallow seas.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦪⏳ Over two decades, scientists #carbon-dated over 7,500 #marine fossils from #ocean beds around the world.

The shared #data showed which environmental factor drives time averaging – the mixing of #fossils from different periods in a single sediment layer. The results show that #sedimentation rate matters most, setting limits on what fossil data can tell us about the past.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 💩🌊 Scientists at #Flinders University and #Germany’s #Karlsruhe Institute of #Technology argue fossilized feces, or #coprolites, helped fuel the #Cambrian Explosion 540 million years ago.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐸🦴 Spea labreae is a newly named spadefoot toad from La Brea Tar Pits, the first extinct Ice Age amphibian found there.

Paleoecologist Alberto Cruz spotted its unusual #bones while reviewing a collection untouched for nearly 30 years. The team also found a toad whose closest living relatives now live 2,400 km (1,500 mi) away, a clue to how #LosAngeles’s #climate changed at the end of the last #iceage.

With its massive horns and beak-shaped mouth, Triceratops is one of the Museum’s most recognizable dinosaurs. The skull of this 65-million-year-old ceratopsian measures about 8 ft (2.4 m) long—almost a third of its body length. Yet it was much lighter than it looks. In its beak-shaped mouth, Triceratops had between 144 and 160 teeth, which it replaced completely between two and four times over its lifetime.
