She is my favorite fishing vessel in the port, and not just because she is new. The Janneke has a presence. She sits lower and broader than the older vessels around her, with a hull shape that is visibly different from anything built more than a few years ago. She was completed in 2024, made her first fishing trip in March 2025, and the fisherman who waved hello from her deck when I was taking these photographs made the whole morning.

What She Is

The Janneke Z-575 is a 28-metre multipurpose stern trawler, Belgian-flagged, built by Werft Shipbuilding in Urk, Netherlands, and designed by the naval architecture firm Marimecs. She is owned by Jelle Hakvoort of Rederij De Toekomst, a Dutch fishing family from Urk, and named after his daughter. The Z-575 registration is Zeebrugge, Belgium, her official home port.

What makes her unusual is the combination of three things: a hybrid hull design that nobody had quite tried in this configuration before, an engine chosen specifically for repairability and low operating cost rather than raw power, and the ability to switch between three different fishing methods depending on the season and the ground. She is not the largest or fastest or most powerful vessel in the Belgian fishing fleet. She is the most thoughtfully designed.

The Hull – A New Shape for a Changing Fishery

Marimecs describes the Janneke’s hull as a hybrid between a modern MDV (Multi-Purpose Deck Vessel) and a traditional beam trawler. The two hull types make different trade-offs: beam trawlers are built wide and stable for deploying heavy gear from both sides, with a large deck area and substantial towing power relative to length; MDV hulls prioritize efficiency, reduced drag, and range. The Janneke’s hull was developed using CFD – Computational Fluid Dynamics – optimization, meaning the shape was iteratively refined in simulation before it was ever built. The result is a vessel that achieves the seakeeping and deck space of a beam trawler with significantly lower resistance through the water.

The practical consequence is fuel consumption. Janneke’s Yanmar 6N21AW delivers 736 kW at 800 rpm, approximately half the engine power of a traditional large Dutch beam trawler. At 10 knots and 21 tonnes of towing capacity, the hull shape is doing what a larger, less efficient hull would need a bigger engine to achieve. Jelle Hakvoort made the calculation explicit: the vessel was designed around cost per fishing day, not maximum capability.

The Yanmar 6N21AW – Why This Engine

Hakvoort’s reasoning for the Yanmar engine is worth quoting directly: low rpm, large displacement, economical fuel consumption, and, critically, a mechanical engine on which the crew can perform much of the maintenance themselves, with minimal electronics that can fail at sea. There is a large Yanmar parts depot in Almere, 45 minutes from Urk. Norwegian and Scottish fishermen have been choosing Yanmar for years and that, Hakvoort noted, says a lot.

The 6N21AW runs through a ZF W10220 gearbox coupling, stepping the 800 rpm engine speed down to 97 rpm at the propeller. The 3.40-metre propeller diameter at that low shaft speed generates the slow, high-torque thrust that trawling requires: sustained pull against resistance, not speed. At 800 rpm the engine runs far below its rated maximum, a conservative operating point that extends service intervals and engine life.

Three Fishing Methods – One Vessel

The Janneke was designed from the start to switch between three different fishing configurations depending on the season, the target species, and the character of the seabed. This flexibility is the core of what makes her “multipurpose” rather than just a general-purpose label.

Beam Tr

The traditional beam trawl deploys a rigid steel beam, typically 4 to 12 meters wide, that holds the net mouth open as it is dragged across the seabed. Tickler chains ahead of the net disturb flatfish, sole, plaice, turbot, from the sediment, sending them into the net. Beam trawling is the historical backbone of the Belgian and Dutch flatfish fleet, particularly effective on the sandy and muddy North Sea bottoms. It is also the most fuel-intensive method, which is part of why the fleet has been moving toward alternatives.

Stone-Mat Gear (Winter)

Stone-mat gear replaces the tickler chains with a mat of rubber or other flexible material that contacts the seabed with far less force. The mat can work over harder, rougher, and more structured ground, rocky patches, gravel beds, areas with irregular relief, where tickler chains would snag and damage the gear, or damage the seabed itself. In winter, when sole move into deeper and more structured ground, stone-mat allows the Janneke to follow them to places a conventional beam trawler cannot work. The reduced seabed contact compared to traditional beam trawling also means less disturbance to benthic habitat.

Twin-Rig (Summer)

Twin-rig trawling deploys two cone-shaped nets side by side from a single vessel, held open by otter boards rather than a rigid beam. The two nets sweep a wide area simultaneously with a large mesh size, typically 120 to 140 mm, which selects for larger flatfish and results in low bycatch of undersized fish. In summer, when plaice move into the northern North Sea and langoustine are targeted in the English Channel and Irish Sea, twin-rigging is the efficient method. The technique requires less engine power than beam trawling for a given swept area, another factor in the Janneke’s fuel economy.

Why Belgium? The Flag Decision

Jelle Hakvoort is Dutch, from Urk. His previous vessel operated under the Belgian flag. The Janneke continues that choice, and the reasoning is practical rather than sentimental. Belgian-flagged fishing vessels have access to a broader set of fishing grounds than Dutch-flagged vessels: the North Sea, the English Channel, the Irish Sea, and the Bay of Biscay. Post-Brexit fishing rights arrangements have made the Channel and Irish Sea grounds harder to access under Dutch registration. Belgian registration keeps all of those waters available.

Belgian-flagged vessels landing at Ostend and Zeebrugge participate in the Belgian fish auction system. The catches from the Janneke’s first months in service, sole, plaice, squid, pass through the Zeebrugge or Ostend auction depending on where she is landing that week. When she was photographed in the Visserijdok at Ostend, she was between trips.

Built on Urk – A Community Milestone

The Janneke was the first large fishing vessel built on Urk in over 24 years. Urk is a former island in the IJsselmeer, now connected to the Flevoland polder, that has maintained Europe’s largest flatfish fleet for decades and remains the fishing community with the highest number of active fishermen per capita in the Netherlands. But the cutter shipbuilding industry that once built and repaired that fleet had largely disappeared, with construction moving to other Dutch yards and abroad.

Werft Shipbuilding, the yard that built the Janneke, was founded specifically to return that capability to Urk. For the Janneke build, Werft assembled a consortium of local companies: VCU-TCD for hull construction, Piet Brouwer Elektrotechniek for electrical systems, De Flux for carpentry, De Boer Marine for electronics, Straalbedrijf Flevoland for blasting and painting, and ITech for pipework and cooling. Marimecs handled the engineering. Almost every element of the vessel was produced within the Urk maritime cluster. The Yanmar 6N21AW was the first Yanmar main engine delivered to a Dutch client in the fishing sector, a milestone for both companies.

Zeebrugge – Industrial Port, Abandoned Streets & Remarkable Vessels: A First Visit by Kusttram

I’d been curious about Zeebrugge for a while. You can’t spend time in Ostend and look at the map of the Belgian coast without noticing it, the large port complex to the northeast, the place where the big ships go, the name that appears on ferry timetables and maritime news. It felt like it deserved a proper visit.

I went on a Thursday in January, starting early: Ostend train station at 7am, the Kusttram heading northeast along the coast. The plan was to stop at Knokke first, a city I’d never visited either, then continue to Zeebrugge. What I found at each stop was about as different as two places on the same coastline can be.

First Stop: Knokke – The Monaco of Belgium

Knokke has a reputation, known in Belgium as the Monaco of the coast, a place of wealth, luxury apartments, and the kind of quiet elegance that comes with serious money deciding to holiday in one location consistently enough to transform it. Stepping off the Kusttram, the reputation was immediately confirmed: the street in front of me had a Bentley, a Porsche, a Maserati, and a Rolls-Royce parked within eyeshot of each other on a January Thursday morning.

I walked to the beach. January in Knokke has an additional quality: nothing is open. The bars, cafes, and restaurants that presumably fill with the summer crowd were shuttered. The promenade was empty. After some searching I found Simz, a cafe that was open, had good coffee, a decent slice of cake, reasonable prices, and genuinely friendly staff. In the context of a town that felt designed for high-season consumption, it stood out precisely for being normal.

Simz – Knokke

I’ve started calling Knokke “Knoki”, the way Berliners call Kottbusser Tor “Kotti.” It felt like the right scale of affectionate shorthand for a place I admired aesthetically but didn’t fully connect with. The apartments are extraordinary. The cars are extraordinary. The January silence is total. I’ll go back in season and see what it becomes.

After an hour I got back on the Kusttram and headed to Zeebrugge.

Arriving in Zeebrugge – A Different World Entirely

The contrast is immediate and total. Where Knokke is composed, expensive, and quiet, Zeebrugge is industrial, raw, and operating on a scale that Knokke’s residential streets give no preparation for. This is Belgium’s largest seaport, one of the major container and Ro-Ro ports of Northern Europe, handling millions of tonnes of cargo annually. The infrastructure is proportionate: vast terminal areas, enormous cranes on the horizon, the kind of heavy engineering that only makes sense at the scale of continental trade.

What I hadn’t expected was the coexistence of that industrial scale with something much quieter and stranger, the remnants of a residential community that the port has partially absorbed and partially left behind. Streets of empty houses. A small village area that feels suspended in time. The contrast between an active, world-scale port on one side and abandoned domestic architecture on the other gives Zeebrugge a quality I haven’t encountered in many other places.

The Nature Reserve – Vlaams Natuurreservaat De Baai van Heist

My first attempt was to walk along the Vlaams Natuurreservaat De Baai van Heist, the Heist Bay nature reserve on the eastern edge of Zeebrugge. This is a significant coastal reserve, a protected area of beach, dune, and shallow intertidal habitat that sits in direct adjacency to one of Europe’s busiest ports. The juxtaposition is characteristic of the whole area.

I was heading toward Henri Viktor Wolvensstraat, hoping to access the reserve from that direction. The path was blocked by a checkpoint: trucks only. Pedestrians not permitted. I turned back and headed into the port area instead, which ultimately led to more interesting discoveries than the nature walk would have.

The West-Hinder – A 1950 Lightship Turned Museum Vessel

Walking into the port area, one of the first things I found was the West-Hinder, a historic lightship with a distinctively red hull, built in 1950. Lightships were the predecessors of modern automated buoys: crewed vessels anchored at fixed positions to mark dangerous sandbanks and shoals for shipping, their lights visible for miles in dark or fog. The West-Hinder took its name from the West Hinder sandbank in the southern North Sea, one of the hazards it was positioned to mark.

It now serves as a museum vessel in Zeebrugge, open to visitors who want to understand what crewing a lightship actually involved, the isolation, the maintenance routines, the specific experience of living aboard a vessel permanently anchored in open sea that never went anywhere. It’s a piece of maritime history that the age of GPS and uncrewed navigation aids has made obsolete, and preserving one here, in an active working port, is the right context for it.

The Vessels — From the Smallest Boats to the Remarkable

The real pleasure of walking Zeebrugge’s harbor area is the sheer range of vessels present at any given moment. Small fishing boats alongside enormous container feeders. Offshore supply ships, survey vessels, ferries, working tugs. The scale variation is extraordinary, you can look from a small traditional fishing boat to a vessel five times its length moored twenty meters away.

On this visit I came across two vessels that became subjects of their own dedicated posts.

The Aerofleet Aero 48 — a Belgian-designed zero-emission ocean catamaran commissioned by a Swiss doctor seeking to circumnavigate the globe without fossil fuels. Built with solar panels, wind turbines, hydro-generators, and a 20-metre mast on a 14.62-metre hull. Finding it quietly moored among far more utilitarian neighbors was a genuine surprise.

The RV Belgica 2 — Belgium’s oceanographic research vessel, at that point nearing the end of nearly two years of forced inactivity due to a legal dispute with its French operator Genavir. It was moved to Antwerp ahead of a March 2026 relaunch. I caught it just in time.

The Abandoned Village – Zeebrugge’s Other Face

The comparison I keep coming back to is Detroit, not in scale, but in the specific quality of industrial expansion that has left residential fabric behind it. Zeebrugge’s port has grown over decades in a way that has gradually enclosed and partially emptied the community that existed alongside it. The result is streets of abandoned houses standing directly adjacent to active industrial infrastructure. Docks that no longer handle cargo, now housing a Kringwinkel second-hand shop. A Kerk van de Heilige Apostelen, the Church of the Holy Apostles, with an empty square in front of it and boarded buildings visible across the road.

I sat on a wooden bench near the church for a while. According to Google Maps the buildings around me are occupied. Google Street View captured them intact in 2013. In January 2026 they were empty, windows dark, no signs of habitation, no people. I didn’t cross paths with a single person in that part of Zeebrugge. The atmosphere was not threatening, it was strangely calm. A deserted village in the shadow of one of Europe’s busiest ports.

I found a K-Way jacket and a decent sweatshirt at the Kringwinkel, the appropriate souvenir for the day. I also stopped at Food & Co for some provisions. These small details, the second-hand shop in a former dock, the one open cafe, the food shop, are the traces of ordinary life that persist in a place otherwise largely given over to industry.

The WE CAN DANCE Area and What Blocked the Way

One area I wanted to reach was the Westerdam, accessible through the zone where the WE CAN DANCE festival is held each year. Zeebrugge has a history as a site for large outdoor events, its industrial landscape providing an unlikely but appropriate backdrop for electronic music that seems to seek out exactly these environments. The locked metal gates I found at the perimeter were a straightforward barrier, and not the right day to push further.

That’s a reason to return with better planning, knowing which areas are accessible and which require different access or different days. Zeebrugge rewards patience and multiple visits more than most places, because its geography is genuinely complicated by the port infrastructure and the varying access conditions around it.

Getting to Zeebrugge – Practical Information

The Kusttram, the coastal tram running the full length of the Belgian coast from De Panne to Knokke, is the simplest way to reach Zeebrugge from Ostend or anywhere else on the coast. The tram stops at the center of the small village area, within walking distance of the West-Hinder, the harbor, and the church square. From Ostend the journey takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, passing through Bredene, De Haan, Blankenberge, and Heist before reaching Zeebrugge.

A few practical notes for a first visit:

• Go mid-week for quiet, the village area is already calm, but weekdays feel appropriately atmospheric for exploration
• Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bag you can carry for hours, the port area involves a lot of walking on uneven surfaces
• Bring food and water, catering options are limited. The Food & Co shop near the church square is useful
• Check what’s accessible before going, some areas are port-restricted and some paths are truck-only
• For photography: the port infrastructure, harbor vessels, and abandoned residential streets are all worthwhile. Winter light is excellent, low, even, without summer haze

I’ll Be Back

I left Zeebrugge exhausted, I hadn’t slept since Wednesday morning, I’d been carrying a 10–12 kg backpack since 4:30am, and by 4pm my body had made its position on the matter very clear. But the visit produced more than I’d expected: two vessel discoveries that became their own full posts, a lightship museum, a ghost village in the middle of a working port, and the specific visual quality of an industrial landscape that hasn’t been tidied for tourism.

Zeebrugge is not the Belgian coast for people who want beach cafes and ice cream. It’s the Belgian coast for people who want to understand what the sea actually does for this country, economically, industrially, historically. It’s raw, complicated, and worth more than one morning. I’ll go back for the urbex photography, for the Westerdam, for the vessels, and for whatever else I missed the first time.

I encountered this one twice in the same two days, which felt like the coast making a point. The first time was during a winter sunset walk on Ostend beach, a small crab, moving deliberately across wet sand in the low light, utterly unbothered. The second was more surprising: a tiny specimen hiding inside a plastic bag when I got home from the Vistrap with my fish. It had apparently hitched a ride.

Both were Carcinus maenas, the European green crab, or shore crab, one of the most common crustaceans on the Belgian and North Atlantic coast, and simultaneously one of the most ecologically destructive invasive species on the planet. The paradox is the point: in Ostend, this crab is background. Everywhere it has been accidentally introduced, it is catastrophe.

Identifying Carcinus maenas – Not Always Green

The name European green crab is mildly misleading, the species is highly variable in colour and can appear olive green, brown, grey, orange, or brick red depending on age, moult stage, and local environmental conditions. Older individuals often run more towards orange and red on the underside. The common name refers to a tendency rather than a reliable feature.

The reliable identification features are structural. The carapace (shell) is broadly fan-shaped, wider than it is long, and the front edge behind each eye carries five short, sharp teeth on each side, a consistent feature that distinguishes Carcinus maenas from similar species. Between the eyes, there are three rounded lobes rather than the pointed projections found on some other shore crabs. Fully grown adults reach around 6–8 cm across the carapace, though most individuals encountered on beaches are smaller.

The legs are flattened and the last pair is only slightly modified, unlike swimming crabs, Carcinus maenas is a walker rather than a swimmer, moving across the substrate and through rock pools and weed beds rather than through open water.

Native Range – Where It Belongs

Carcinus maenas is native to the coastlines of Europe and North Africa, from Norway and Iceland in the north down to Mauritania in the south, including the entire North Sea and Baltic Sea coastline. The Belgian coast is well within the heart of its native range, this is a species that has lived on these shores for as long as there have been shores to live on.

In its native habitat it occupies the intertidal and shallow subtidal zones: rocky shores, sandy beaches, estuaries, salt marshes, seagrass beds, and harbor walls. It is extraordinarily tolerant of environmental variation, able to survive in water temperatures from near freezing to around 33°C, and in salinities ranging from nearly fresh water to full oceanic salt. This physiological flexibility is a large part of what makes it such a successful colonizer when it arrives somewhere new.

On the Belgian coast and in Ostend harbour specifically, shore crabs are a constant presence. They move up and down the beach with the tide, feeding through the intertidal zone at high water and retreating to damp cover, under rocks, in weed beds, inside harbored boats, when the tide drops. The individual hiding in the Vistrap fish bag had presumably made its way in with the catch, a reminder that the boundary between sea and shore market is less fixed than it appears.

Biology and Behaviour – An Effective Predator

Diet

Carcinus maenas is primarily carnivorous, feeding on molluscs, mussels, cockles, periwinkles, and small clams, as well as worms, small crustaceans, and whatever carrion it can find. It is a powerful crusher: the claws are strong relative to body size, capable of breaking open shellfish that other predators cannot access. This feeding ability is a key part of why it competes so effectively with native species wherever it is introduced, it exploits food sources other crabs cannot reach.

Moulting and Growth

Like all crustaceans, Carcinus maenas grows by moulting, shedding its hard carapace to expand, then hardening a new, larger shell. During the moult period, the crab is soft, vulnerable, and typically hides. It is precisely during this brief soft-shell window that the most prized culinary preparations are made, more on that below.

Tidal Activity Patterns

Shore crabs are active feeders in the intertidal zone at high water, when the tide covers the rocks and sand and prey becomes accessible. As the tide drops, they move with it or retreat to shelter. The winter sunset encounter on Ostend beach was at low to mid tide, the crab was working the wet sand zone, which is typical foraging behavior for the species.

A Global Invader – The Same Crab, Different Consequences

Outside its native European and North African range, Carcinus maenas is considered one of the world’s most harmful invasive marine species. It has established itself on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, the coasts of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South America, all via accidental introduction in ballast water or on ship hulls, beginning in the 19th century and accelerating through the 20th.

In these invaded regions, the same qualities that make it unremarkable in Ostend make it destructive elsewhere: broad environmental tolerance, powerful predation, aggressive competition for food and habitat, and few natural predators that have evolved to suppress its numbers. The specific documented impacts include the predation of juvenile king crab and juvenile salmon, the destruction of eelgrass beds that larval fish use as nursery habitat, and the displacement of native crab species, particularly Dungeness crab on the North American Pacific coast, through direct food competition.

The lesson Carcinus maenas teaches is a general one: ecological impact is not an intrinsic property of a species but a relationship between the species and its context. On the Belgian shore, it is native fauna, part of the system, held in balance by predators and competitors that evolved alongside it. On the coast of Maine or Western Australia, the same animal is an uncontrolled disruptor, because the ecosystem it enters has no prior relationship with it and no evolved mechanisms for managing it.

Eating Green Crab – From Soup to Venetian Soft-Shell Delicacy

In its European native range, Carcinus maenas is edible and eaten, though not widely celebrated as a food source in the way that larger crab species are. The flesh yield per animal is modest, and the effort of picking it is significant. In Belgium and the Netherlands, shore crabs occasionally appear in fish soups and bisques, where their shells contribute flavor to the stock. They are not a market item in the way that brown crab (Cancer pagurus) is.

The culinary tradition of greatest interest, however, concerns not Carcinus maenas itself but its close Mediterranean relative, Carcinus aestuarii, and specifically the Venetian practice of harvesting soft-shell crabs at the moult.

Moeche and Moleche, the Venetian Soft-Shell Tradition

In the Venetian lagoon, specialist fishermen known as moecanti have for centuries monitored and harvested Carcinus aestuarii during the brief soft-shell window that follows each moult. The practice requires intimate knowledge of the crab’s moult cycle, the fishermen can identify crabs about to moult by subtle changes in the colour of their legs, and these pre-moult crabs are separated into holding tanks, where they are watched closely until they shed their shell.

In the hours immediately after moulting, before the new shell begins to harden, the entire crab, body, legs, claws, is edible whole. These soft-shell crabs are called moeche in Venetian dialect (moleche in standard Italian), and they are a seasonal luxury, typically available only in spring and autumn when moulting activity peaks. They are eaten fried, traditionally dipped in beaten egg before cooking, and they are one of the most characterful foods of the Venetian kitchen, delicate, sweet, slightly briny, and available for only a few weeks of the year.

Hard-shell Carcinus aestuarii females are also harvested for their roe under the name masinette, a separate product from a different stage of the same animal’s life cycle. The moecanti tradition is recognized as part of Venice’s intangible cultural heritage and is under pressure from declining lagoon water quality and the shrinking number of practitioners who carry the knowledge.

A Common Crab Worth Looking At Properly

The European green crab is so ordinary on the Belgian coast that it barely registers. Walk any beach in Ostend at low tide and you’ll see them, in the wrack line, in rock pools, on wet sand, occasionally in your fish bag. Familiarity can make things invisible.

But look at what this animal actually is: a species with a global ecological footprint, a 200-million-year crustacean lineage behind it, a sophisticated predatory toolkit, a complex moult cycle that humans have turned into one of Italy’s most prized seasonal foods, and a presence on this specific stretch of North Sea coast that predates everything else I’ve written about on this blog by an enormous margin. The tram came in 1885. The fishing harbor was built and rebuilt over centuries. Carcinus maenas has been on this beach since long before any of it.

Part of OMH — Ostend Music Hunt / Oostek Aan Zee LP

The video above is a preview of a track currently in production for the Oostek Aan Zee LP, the full-length techno album at the center of the OMH – Ostend Music Hunt project. The source of inspiration for this particular piece is Oosteroever, the neighborhood directly across the harbor from Ostend’s city center and an isolated beach where I found wild oysters that I named “Oysters Bay”.

Every track on Oostek Aan Zee has a specific geographic and atmospheric origin. This one comes from a place that is visually unlike anything else on the Belgian coast.

The Place

During my long walks in and around Ostend, sometimes in cold that makes the hands ache and the mind go quiet, I found a small beach scattered with rocks where wild oysters have established themselves. A quiet place, away from the city center and the main tourist areas. I stayed there one Sunday morning, watching these strange molluscs: motionless, dark against the rock, individually unremarkable, collectively forming something that felt like a community.

I found a few empty shells and brought them back to the studio. They sit on my desk now. They remind me every day that I cannot stay away from the sea for too long, from nature, from the Ostend vibe where I feel completely at home, even without yet speaking the local language well. Dutch is hard to memorize and hard for me to pronounce. But I keep learning, step by step, and I am confident that soon I will be able to start a real conversation. My real language, for now, is music.

Wild Oyster – Shell 01

Do Oysters Actually Make Sound?

The premise of the track is not fantasy. Oysters and other bivalves produce acoustic signals, and the underwater acoustic environment around oyster beds is measurably different from bare substrate. The sounds are not conversation in any anthropomorphic sense, but they are real, documented, and biologically meaningful.

Oyster larvae, the free-swimming stage before the animal settles permanently on a surface, respond to acoustic cues when selecting settlement sites. Research in marine bioacoustics has demonstrated that oyster reef habitats produce specific low-frequency sound signatures from the snapping, clicking, and water movement of the biological community living there, and that larvae orient toward these sounds during settlement. A reef that sounds active is a reef that a larva interprets as healthy and worth joining. The acoustic environment is part of the reef’s biological recruitment mechanism.

Adult oysters produce sounds too: valve clicks as the shells open and close, water movement through the mantle cavity during feeding and respiration, and the low-frequency structural resonance of dense shell clusters under wave action. None of this is audible from above the surface. It is a subsurface acoustic world that exists continuously beneath the waterline of every oyster bed, entirely invisible to anyone standing on the shore looking at what appears to be inert rock.

Wild oysters nearly disappeared from the Belgian coast. They are making a cautious return. What the recovering population sounds like underwater, what frequencies a healthy but fragile community of Ostrea edulis produces as it re-establishes itself on the rocks of a North Sea harbor, is a question that science has begun to answer, and that music can ask differently.

FM Synthesis and Reaktor 6 – The Technical Approach

Oysters Bay was built in Native Instruments Reaktor 6 using FM synthesis as the primary sound generation method. FM – frequency modulation synthesis works by using one oscillator (the modulator) to modulate the frequency of another (the carrier), producing complex, harmonically rich spectra from simple mathematical relationships between the two frequencies. The ratio between carrier and modulator determines the harmonic character of the result: integer ratios produce harmonic, pitched sounds; non-integer ratios produce inharmonic, metallic, or glassy textures.

For a track imagining the acoustic world of oysters, FM synthesis is the right tool for several reasons. The frequencies that bivalves produce and respond to tend to be low, complex, and not cleanly pitched, they sit in the territory between tone and texture that FM handles naturally. The modulator-to-carrier relationships that produce slightly inharmonic, resonant sounds also happen to evoke the physical character of hard shell surfaces vibrating in water: not quite metallic, not quite organic, something in between.

Reaktor 6’s FM architecture allows precise control over modulation ratios, modulation depth, and the envelope shapes applied to each operator, the combination that determines whether an FM sound breathes slowly like deep water or flickers like a valve click. The layering of multiple FM voices at different rates and depths builds the underwater texture that the track inhabits: a space that has the stillness of a seabed but is acoustically alive in the way that any living community is, even when it appears motionless from above.

The melancholy in the track is intentional and specific. It reflects the fact that the oysters in this place, wild Ostrea edulis on the rocks near Ostend, are a recovering population, not a thriving one. The acoustic space of the track is quiet in the way that a community coming back from the edge of absence is quiet: present, cautious, not yet sure of itself.

First Track of the OMH Project

Oysters Bay is the first track in the broader series of projects that will become the Oostek Aan Zee LP the album at the center of the Ostend Music Hunt (OMH). The OMH project hides the album physically in Ostend using NFC technology; readers of this blog hold clues to finding it.

That the series begins with oysters is not arbitrary. The wild oysters on the rocks near Ostend are one of the first things I found on returning to the city, a species making a cautious return to a coast it once covered, in a place I was returning to myself. The parallel is not a metaphor I constructed afterwards. It was simply there, on a Sunday morning, on a cold rocky beach, before I had made anything.

The track drifts between ambient, IDM, and experimental territories. It is not techno. It is not club music. It is the sound of a specific place, imagined from the inside of that place, made on the last day of one year as a way of beginning the next one.

It is not Miami. It is not Pattaya, or Ibiza, or any of the places the word “sea” might conjure when people reach for warmth and ease. It is the North Sea, in winter, before the light has properly arrived. Your hands freeze inside ten minutes. Your ears burn. Every breath is cold enough to make itself known.

This is what I call my paradise.

Early morning winter walks along the Belgian coast are demanding in a way that feels honest. There is nothing comfortable about them and nothing trying to be. The North Sea in January is not performing for anyone. It is simply itself, grey, heavy, immense, indifferent and being present in it, on foot, before the rest of the world has started moving, produces a specific quality of attention that I cannot find anywhere else.

These photographs were taken in Nieuwpoort, the fishing port at the mouth of the IJzer river, about fifteen kilometres west of Ostend along the coast. I went early. The harbour was already working: fishing vessels coming in from the night, engines idling down, the specific sounds of a boat being made fast after a hard crossing. Larger ships in the outer roads, waiting for tide or weather, their navigation lights still visible in the remaining dark.

Sometimes seals are in the water here, or resting on the beach nearby. That morning there were none. There was just the harbour, the cold, the returning boats, and the memorial.

The Fishermen’s Memorial in Nieuwpoort stands at the harbour entrance, where the working boats pass close by on every departure and every return. It commemorates the men of Nieuwpoort’s fishing fleet who went to sea and did not come back, names listed on stone, date after date, year after year, across the full span of the town’s fishing history.

The North Sea is genuinely dangerous. It is shallow in many places and subject to sudden severe weather, with wave patterns that become chaotic and steep when tide and wind run against each other. Fog is common and can arrive quickly. The sandbanks shift. The traffic separation schemes that keep the enormous commercial shipping lanes ordered are a permanent hazard for smaller vessels. North Sea fishermen have always known that the sea is not a place that makes guarantees.

The memorial is not dramatic or theatrical. It is exact: names, dates, vessels. The kind of record that resists sentiment while producing it anyway, because each name is a person who left from this harbour and did not return to it. Families who waited. A community that absorbed the loss and kept fishing, because the sea was what Nieuwpoort was built on and what it still depends on.

Standing at it in the early morning, with the working boats coming in past it, is one of those experiences that reorganises your sense of proportion. The fishing we see at the Vistrap in Ostend, the grey shrimps on the table, the catches at the quay, all of it has this behind it. The scale of what the North Sea has taken from these communities over centuries is written on that stone.

Early Hours – A Track Dedicated to Those the Sea Kept

The track on this post, an extract from “Early Hours” by Dimitri Pike, was made in response to this morning and this memorial. It is part of the OMH project, the work that is building toward the Oostek Aan Zee LP.

Many seamen have died at sea, fishermen and sailors, with no distinction between them. The sea makes no distinction either. This track is dedicated to those who lived by it and died by it. Not as tragedy, though it is that. As something closer to what the memorial itself represents: a precise and honest acknowledgement that this is what the sea is, that people have always known it, and that they went out anyway. That is the value, the dignity, and the respect the dedication refers to.

I would call it an aesthetic, too. Not in a detached or aesthetic-ist sense. But in the sense that the specific beauty of the North Sea at that hour, its colour, its weight, its total indifference and the specific gravity of a list of names on a memorial at the water’s edge, are the same kind of thing. Both are honest. Both are real. Both make demands on attention that are worth meeting.

Nieuwpoort – A Fishing Port Worth Knowing

Nieuwpoort sits at the mouth of the IJzer, the river that became one of the decisive geographical features of the First World War, when the deliberate flooding of the IJzer plain in 1914 halted the German advance along the coast and held the last unoccupied corner of Belgium. The town was almost entirely destroyed during the war and rebuilt afterwards. The fishing port that exists today is post-war construction on medieval foundations.

The modern harbour is divided between a commercial fishing port on the east bank and a large yacht harbour, one of the largest on the Belgian coast on the west. The fishing activity is concentrated and serious: beam trawlers, shrimp boats, and smaller vessels working the North Sea grounds. The Vistrap, the fish market has a Nieuwpoort location as well as the more famous one in Ostend. Early morning at the quay, before the tourist-facing parts of the harbour open, is the real Nieuwpoort: fish, diesel, salt water, cold air.

The Kusttram stops here on its 67-kilometre coastal run from De Panne to Knokke, which makes Nieuwpoort easy to reach from Ostend without a car. The journey takes about twenty minutes. Leave early enough and you arrive in darkness, which is exactly when the harbour is most itself.

The Luxury of Loneliness at Sea

There is a post on this blog about the luxury of loneliness, the specific, chosen quality of solitude that early mornings on the North Sea coast make possible. I look out toward the horizon, or back at a city still slowly waking up. I watch fishing vessels returning from a hard night. I watch larger ships head out for days.

It is a moment with everything and entirely with myself at the same time. The scale of the sea, the specific gravity of what the memorial represents, the sound of a boat engine at idle in a cold harbour all of it is present, and none of it requires anything from me except attention.

The inshore fishermen work differently from the large industrial trawlers: smaller vessels, closer to shore, more selective gear, shorter trips. The North Sea they fish is the same one I record sounds beside, the same water that comes into the harbor, moves the mooring ropes, and carries the distant engine noise across the dock at night.

EU fishing policy sets quotas for how much of each species can be caught, in what areas, and with what gear. For large industrial fleets with dedicated compliance teams and the resources to navigate complex bureaucracy, this is manageable. For a family running one or two boats out of Ostend, the same regulations represent a significant overhead that can make the difference between a viable season and an unviable one.

The frustration expressed by small-scale fishermen, that the regulatory framework effectively advantages large industrial operators while constraining exactly the kind of low-impact, short-supply-chain fishing that EU sustainability policy claims to support, is widespread and difficult to dismiss. It’s a structural contradiction that policy has not yet adequately resolved.

It has survived the transformation of Ostend from a royal resort town to a busy working port and back to a city that is both at once. It opens every morning at 7am, closes at 6pm, and has only two guaranteed closures in the calendar year: Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If the sea is too rough for fishing, it closes then too; but that is the sea’s decision, not the market’s.

What You’ll Find at the Vistrap

The Vistrap is not a fixed supermarket layout with consistent stock. What’s available depends on what came in that morning, which varies with the season, the weather, and which boats went out. That variability is part of what makes it worth visiting repeatedly, it reflects the actual reality of North Sea fishing rather than a curated retail selection.

That said, certain things are reliably present across most of the year. Grey shrimps, Crangon crangon, the small North Sea shrimp that is essentially the emblem of Belgian coastal cuisine, are the Vistrap’s most iconic product, sold cooked and ready to peel by the half-kilo or kilo. Flatfish are almost always available: plaice, sole, and turbot are the North Sea staples. Depending on the season you’ll find sea bass, cod, ray, whiting, and whatever else the fleet brought in. Shellfish, mussels, oysters, occasionally crab, appear when conditions allow.

The number of open stalls varies by day and season. On a busy summer Saturday the full market is bustling; on a winter weekday you might find one or two sellers. I visited on a Friday in late January and only one stall was open, but the selection was wide, the fish was fresh, and the experience was arguably better for the quiet.

What €5 Gets You at the Vistrap

I want to tell this story properly because it captures something essential about the Vistrap.

I arrived at the market with five euros in cash, all I had on me, having not thought to stop at a cash machine beforehand. The stall I found didn’t accept bank cards. I asked, slightly embarrassed, whether it would be possible to buy some fish for five euros. The vendor didn’t hesitate. What I received was a portion that I can only describe as genuinely stunning, generous in a way that supermarket fish counters, with their precise 200-gram portions and plastic trays, are simply not equipped to be.

This is not charity. It is a different economy: one where the scale of transactions is human rather than corporate, where the seller knows the value of what they’re selling because they’re connected to where it came from, and where a returning customer is worth more than the marginal difference in weight on a single sale. Five euros at a supermarket fish counter gets you something measured to the gram. Five euros at the Vistrapgets you a meal and a reason to come back.

Bring cash. There is no ATM on the Visserskaai itself, so stop at one on the way, there are several near the train station and along the main shopping streets. The exact cash policy varies by stall; some may accept cards, but it’s not something to rely on.

After the Vistrap – Frites at Hazegras

Fresh North Sea fish and Belgian frites are a combination that requires no justification. After picking up the fish at the Vistrap I stopped at Hazegras Afhalen & Thuislevering, a frituur located just behind the red-light district, which I’d been told by multiple people was the best in Ostend. That recommendation was correct. The frites were excellent: properly cooked, the right texture, not oily. Combined with the Vistrap fish back at the Airbnb, it was one of the better meals I’ve had in the city.

Ostend has a high density of frituurs for a city its size, the Belgian coast’s relationship with the fried potato is deep and serious. But quality varies considerably. Hazegras has a consistent local reputation and is worth the short walk from the Visserskaai.

The Vistrap and the Broader Fishing Ecosystem

The Vistrap doesn’t exist in isolation. It is the retail end of a complete ecosystem that includes the fishing fleet moored along the Visserskaai, the families who crew and maintain those boats, the harbor infrastructure that keeps the port functioning, and the North Sea itself, which provides the raw material that the whole system depends on.

Buying at the Vistrap is a direct participation in that ecosystem. The money goes to the fishermen and their families, not to a distribution company or a retail chain. The fish travels from sea to your bag in hours rather than days. The supply chain is as short as it is possible to make it for seafood in a northern European city.

That directness has become increasingly important to me since I started spending more time on the Belgian coast and understanding more about how the fishing community here actually operates, the early mornings, the regulatory pressures, the generational knowledge, the economic fragility. Buying at the Vistrap is not a political act, but it is a deliberate one.

Practical Guide – Everything You Need Before You Go

Getting There

The Vistrap is on the Visserskaai, along the fishing harbor quay on the eastern side of Ostend’s harbor. From the train station it is approximately ten minutes on foot, head towards the sea and follow the harbor. The walk takes you past the tram terminus and through the edge of the city center. There is no complicated navigation required: follow your nose toward the harbor and you’ll find it.

Opening Hours

• Daily: 7am – 6pm
• Closed: Christmas Day (25 December), New Year’s Day (1 January)
• Storm closure: When weather prevents fishing, stalls may not open, check local conditions if visiting in winter
• Best time to visit: Early morning for the widest selection and the freshest arrivals; weekends for the fullest market

Payment

Most stalls are cash only, though this may vary. Bring cash before you arrive, the nearest ATMs are near the train station and along Kapellestraat. There is no cashpoint on the Visserskaai itself.

Summer and weekends bring the fullest market with multiple stalls and the widest selection. Winter weekdays may have only one or two sellers open, particularly in rough weather. The quality is consistent regardless of how many stalls are trading; what changes is the range of species available and the general atmosphere of the market.

• Grey shrimps (grijze garnalen): the Vistrap’s signature product, sold cooked by weight, start here
• Plaice, sole, turbot: North Sea flatfish staples, almost always available
• Seasonal species: cod, sea bass, ray, whiting, ask what came in that morning

Why I Keep Coming Back

Since reconnecting seriously with Ostend, the Vistrap has become a fixed point in how I move around the city. The shift from supermarket meat to fresh Vistrap fish didn’t feel like a dietary decision so much as a consequence of geography: once you’ve bought fish that was in the sea a few hours ago, the alternative loses its appeal almost completely. The difference in freshness is not subtle.

But it’s also more than that. The Vistrap is one of the few places in Ostend, or anywhere, where the transaction is still immediate, personal, and honest. The person selling you the fish knows where it came from because they or someone they know was there when it was caught. That kind of knowledge is rare now and worth supporting.

If you’re visiting Ostend and eat fish at all, the Vistrap is not optional. Go early, bring cash, and ask what was best that morning. You won’t leave disappointed.

A Day in the Life — What Ostend Fishermen Actually Do

The working day of an Ostend fisherman does not begin at a reasonable hour. Boats typically leave in the night or before dawn, around 3 or 4am, to reach the fishing grounds at the right state of the tide and be back with a viable catch before the morning market. Sleep, when it happens, happens in fragments.

At sea, the small-scale fleet operates in the North Sea’s inshore coastal zone, deploying nets for grey shrimp (Crangon crangon) and flatfish, predominantly plaice, sole, and turbot depending on the season. The inshore fishermen work differently from the large industrial trawlers: smaller vessels, closer to shore, more selective gear, shorter trips. The North Sea they fish is the same one I record sounds beside, the same water that comes into the harbor, moves the mooring ropes, and carries the distant engine noise across the dock at night.

When the boats dock, the work continues on land. Nets are emptied and cleaned, catch is sorted and prepared. In the family operations that still dominate Ostend’s small-scale fleet, this is a collective effort, spouses, siblings, children old enough to help. The Vistrap stall is set up. The morning begins for everyone else as it’s already half over for the fishermen.

EU Quotas and the Regulatory Burden

EU fishing policy sets quotas for how much of each species can be caught, in what areas, and with what gear. For large industrial fleets with dedicated compliance teams and the resources to navigate complex bureaucracy, this is manageable. For a family running one or two boats out of Ostend, the same regulations represent a significant overhead that can make the difference between a viable season and an unviable one.

The frustration expressed by small-scale fishermen, that the regulatory framework effectively advantages large industrial operators while constraining exactly the kind of low-impact, short-supply-chain fishing that EU sustainability policy claims to support, is widespread and difficult to dismiss. It’s a structural contradiction that policy has not yet adequately resolved.
