I am happy to announce our latest paper! "Surprising cryptic cavefish diversity in a long-studied karst cave ecosystem of northern Alabama"

I absolutely love our name for it too, an entire new genus, not just species: Demogorgonichthys arcanus

:OpenAccess: rdcu.be/fsgWT

Why did it take so long to find, in a highly monitored cave? Well just take a look at the mud with water channels and low ceilings, and we cannot typically even get into the water because of other protected and highly endangered species. So visual surveying is difficult, and limited.

UU. #peces #fish

Look at this gorgeous thing! I think it’s something like a shark vertebrae? Found on the Dutch coast (near Katwijk). Can anyone help identify this? Boosts very much appreciated, I’m so in love with this pretty little thing.

📷Wayne y Pam Osborn #peces #fish

Many #seabirds are starving to death as a marine #heatwave lingers off #California and #fish seek deeper, cooler waters, scientists say. Scientists fear the die-off of #birds could worsen with #ElNino warming of parts of #Pacific. Die-offs are becoming more frequent as planet warms and #oceans heat up.
As cold-water species move deeper and farther north, the marine heat wave coupled with El Nino could further disrupt #foodwebs for sea life from gray whales to seabirds.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: This magnificent #Roman #fish-shaped flask was found during the excavation of a storeroom in the ancient city of Begram/Afghanistan.
It was probably made in a workshop at Alexandria/Egypt, dating 1st/2nd century AD. Begram was a major trading city at the Silk Road, the flask was found in one of two storerooms of a merchant, filled with luxury good.
