I just wanted to cancel an important appointment because the extreme #heat makes me unable to go outside into that oven. Their answering machine was at the limit.

They called me back: Yes, everybody wanted to cancel today but your appointment is tomorrow. It will be a little bit cooler then. If not, just call again tomorrow how you feel.

This is what the heat does to brains, answering machines, and appointments.

"Climate activists are sometimes depicted as dangerous radicals, but the truly dangerous radicals are countries that are increasing production of fossil fuels."

I joined NPR affiliate WOSU Public Media All Sides with Amy Juravich this morning to discuss extreme heat and heat resilience - timely, as Ohio experienced a record-breaking heatwave last month.

Yesterday I said that I had written three good essays this week, and published two of them. Today, I'm publishing the third. This one is not at all cheerful.

"So: given the data above, and the projected map above, the 'everyone dies' event projected by the Meteorological Office covers the triangle bounded by Plymouth-Norwich-Glasgow — and yes, that includes us here in Auchencairn."

The "long tail" of heatwaves:

"In public health we talk about #ExtremeHeat having a "long tail" in a statistical sense. The number of excess deaths spikes during and immediately after the #heatwave, but death rates don't drop back to zero straight away. Organ damage is a likely cause.

Clearly it's time for other hot countries to ramp up their own heat wave preparations."

Alright friends, we worked to get this out today at what is for most of you the beginning of one of the hottest weeks in your region. We're used to living through temperatures sometimes as high as 126 F and often over 110 -- and we've learned a lot. Not a single one of these tips involves running your air conditioner or making expensive alterations to your home, because we understand that all of us are living through climate change with whatever resources we currently hold and nothing more.

Stay cool and hydrated, friends!

After the #extremeHeat in France, the danger of #wildfires is enormous. #Heatwave and #soil #dryness didn't change much for the plants this week - with "cool" 30°C and full sunshine.

#Trees try to resist by getting "dried" #leaves. At a certain heat temp., the process starts at the exterieur like burnings. Then the green vanishes to the centre until #photosynthesis is stopped. If the plant can't get soon enough rain to regenerate, it can die. Food crops die before trees.

Uncharted territory: Ocean surface temperatures hit a record high for June

"As a result, the oceans are warming at an accelerating rate. In 2020, the amount of heat being added to the oceans was equivalent to about five Hiroshima bombs a second. Last year, it was closer to 11 Hiroshima explosions a second. The UN’s secretary general, António Guterres, has warned “Earth is being pushed beyond its limits”. >>>

ICYMI: Heat waves worldwide are becoming more harsh and frequent because of human-caused warming from fossil fuel pollution.

The record-shattering heat waves across the world are two recent examples.

We need to make oil, coal and gas corporations pay their fair share for the damage they cause!

This is NOT ‘just a hot summer.’

It is Big Oil and Gas’s business model made visible in sweat, burned crops and packed emergency rooms.

Polluters KNEW, they LIED, they PROFITED.

Now it is time to make them pay and fund real climate solutions.

@t3rcermillenium @koen_hufkens well, as @ketan wrote on Bluesky this morning, also the BBC...

"Watching BBC News and they just did 5 minutes with a doctor about how this heatwave is life threatening and the interviewer closed it with "well, it's just an opportunity to have ice cream for breakfast!!".

Amazing clip of how the BBC seems just blissfully unaware of what is happening."

👨‍⚕️: "Heat strokes particularly, are life threatening."

👨: "Might be a chance for ice cream at breakfast."

Climate litigation - Trapped by floods and fearing death in the heat: the Australians taking legal action over the climate crisis

"The complaint is exploratory. It argues the government is violating the claimants’ human rights by continuing to support coal and gas developments that fuel climate extremes."

"... A “glaring inconsistency” in climate policy: that the country is taking steps to cut domestic emissions as it expands support for fossil fuel exports. The stories of these claimants show climate change is not an abstract future threat... Australia has a “huge amount of liability and exposure” given the scale of its fossil fuel exports." >>

Traffic jams? Consider underground tunnels to ease congestion on the hot roads

Elon Musk "really profits from a kind of terra nullius environment, where there’s as few regulations as possible, and he can quickly move into a relatively empty space and dominate it,” Slobodian says. Just as he achieved that with SpaceX’s rockets and Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites, so Musk doubtless saw the underground realm as territory for the taking."

We urgently need an uncongested tunnel underneath Hyde St in car-dependent #Bellingen >>
