This door in Viana do Castelo is dark paneled wood and almost plain. Everything happens above it. A gilded crest of acanthus scrolls and carved rosebuds sits over the lintel, the brass escutcheons below pick up the same gold, and blue and white azulejos frame the base of the wall on either side.

Three pointed arches, three cast-iron urns, and a tiny arched opening at the base of one door. In Ponte de Lima, the iron fanlights are the best-kept part of this facade.

The granite in Braga is hard enough to ruin a chisel, and somebody carved this arch from it anyway. Rosettes climb both jambs, a rope molding curls around the opening, and a small shield sits at the keystone. The wooden doors underneath benefits from the surrounding decorations, don't you think?

Ornate #Doorsday in #Görlitz 💅

On Saturday I'm doing three separate tours of the Bauhaus in my hometown, Dessau. It was my birthday wish because I've lived in Dessau for 18 years without ever properly visiting the Bauhaus. I hope to get a few decent photos out of it too. A lace curtain hangs in the window next to this cottage door, the kind you'd find hand-worked at a market stall down the coast. The wall's painted a solid blue for the bottom stretch, and the number 3 is brushed straight onto the plaster, no house sign required.

A hand-forged iron cross bars the window of this cobalt door against a wall the color of egg yolk. Someone still polishes the brass knocker. The house number is painted on an azulejo tile, in case the color scheme wasn't already doing enough work.
