Knowing that some good friends and colleagues still rate Mastodon, and with Meta's social media sites only getting worse, I figure it's time to start posting here again.

To kick things off, here's some recent #paleoart of the iconic #sauropod Cetiosaurus in a Jurassic landscape. All the plant recons are based on work by @Palaeojules. The composition is heavily indebted to a famous (non-palaeo) artwork.

🦆 NEW: Three biologists attempt to classify #Gonzo from The Muppet Show using real evolutionary #biology.

One sees an #ibis, another sees a pre-modern #theropod #dinosaur, and the third says it depends on whether his head tuft is #hair or #feathers. His #nose remains a mystery to all of them.

"Among the discoveries are the oldest #tick known to science, a #lacewing larva that camouflaged itself with plant debris, and a fly preserved mid-meal with #pollen from an extinct gymnosperm group clumped on its body — direct evidence of #pollination before flowering plants took over that ecological role. Theropod #dinosaur feathers have also turned up"

🦖 NEW: A team of paleontologists discovered the first known trackway from an adult T. rex in #NorthDakota’s #HellCreek Formation.

The four three-toed prints span approximately 7 m (23 ft) with a 4 m (13 ft) stride, suggesting the #dinosaur walked at about 7 km/h (4.5 mph). The finding, dated to 66.5 million years ago, provides rare behavioral evidence of how the apex predator moved across landscapes.

Hoevelaken mega thread 3000 continues.

As I finished my book tonight I'm on a stroll in the suburban part of Hoevelaken.

Just passed this excellent #dinosaur standing outside a farm.

🦖🦴 Scientists are debating whether T. rex arms shrunk to avoid being bitten by other hunters, or to allow for a more massive skull.

The small limbs might have been a biological tradeoff that provided the #dinosaur with a more powerful bite and stronger neck muscles.

The results of groundbreaking new research provide insight into the sounds of the Jurassic and the Cretaceous! The sounds of dinosaur flatulence have been reconstructed by Dr Christine Bagenal and her colleagues, beginning the journey of mapping an unknown territory of dinosaur biology. 🦖🦴 Paleontologists just identified a new #dinosaur in #China that looked unlike anything we’ve seen before. Haolong dongi was covered in hollow, skin-based spikes – much like a modern #porcupine. The #fossil is so well-preserved that scientists could see its individual skin cells under a microscope after 125 million years.

I'm currently working on a fantasy story with dinosaurs—dragons have become too boring for me. There's one type of dinosaur I definitely want to include in my story: a Nanuqsaur (a kind of T-Rex/polar bear hybrid). I've been thinking for a long time about what to call this dinosaur in my story, and my first idea is "Hrym."

"An exceptionally well-preserved #fossil from China reveals the true appearance and possible defence strategies of iguanodontian #dinosaurs. The new species #Haolong dongi preserves skin at cellular level and bears strange spikes never seen before in dinosaurs."

🦖👣 Identifying #dinosaur footprints has always been a bit like the "Cinderella" story – trying to find the right foot to match the stone slipper. Now, scientists have launched a free app called #DinoTracker that uses #AI to analyze 200 million-year-old tracks.
