#Australia became home to one of the world’s largest populations of Holocaust survivors outside #Israel after the second world war. The influx of #refugees fundamentally shaped the postwar multicultural fabric of Sydney and #Melbourne, importing deep, intergenerational trauma along with extraordinary stories of endurance and survival.

There are lots of photos from the Nazi years in Germany, photos showing smiling Germans standing under signs adorned with swastikas and reading, "Jews are our misfortune."
After the war, those who starred in these photos celebrating cruelty — rounding up targeted people, sending them to concentration camps and, ultimately, to be murdered — had to live with this photographic evidence.
