The German word 'urig' is truly unique - it describes a blend of tradition, cosiness and a certain charming roughness. As well as ‘cosy’, it could also be translated as ‘quaint’ or ‘rustic’.

The accommodation where we’ve spent the last few days hiking can only be described as 'urig'. This stag wearing welding goggles is the centrepiece of the living room.

The day before yesterday, we took a quick look around the area near our holiday accommodation on Lake Eder. I must take a few photos one of these days in the small, secluded village where we’re staying. If you walk from the village to the Sengelsberg - a mountain hardly anyone knows, I guess - you pass these two trees. In principle, nothing spectacular. Unless, that is, the sun is directly behind them and you get to see these magnificent shadows.

But taking the time to linger, to wait deliberately … that’s no longer possible in the age of the smartphone.

Shortly after the World War II, the sculptor Kurt Lehmann used his own children at play as the model for this #sculpture. It was exhibited at the very first documenta and was later purchased by the City of #Hannover.

Fun fact: His son, depicted here, later became director of the Hannover State Opera and, long before his career took off, already had his own #monument in the form of this sculpture.

Courage.

Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann was a Göttingen professor and a "founding father" of German parliamentarianism. In 1837, he led the Göttingen Seven - a group of professors who risked their careers to protest King Ernst August’s constitutional violations. His bronze statue now is the central part of a #monument and stands before the
#LowerSaxony State Parliament in #Hannover, symbolizing the transition from academia to principled political action.

I captured this little snapshot of everyday life in #Hannover on a side street off Limmerstraße. Limmerstraße itself is a popular hangout for local young people because of its many bars and restaurants. One “limmert” here.

When Caroline Mensing was laid to rest at the Neustadt Cemetery in 1850, #Hannover was a different world. No cars, no concrete, no internet. Today, her headstone looks out upon the Conti Tower at the University of Hannover - a symbol of modernity that has itself grown old over the years, something she could never have imagined. A place of mourning has become a city park where life passes her by.

Inscription on the gravestone: Here sleeps peacefully our beloved sister Caroline Mensing, born on November 27, 1802, died on October 9, 1850.

Harenberger Straße, inspired by Abbey Road

I’ve had this idea in mind for a very long time. Yesterday, I stumbled across this quiet zebra crossing in the west of #Hannover and finally got round to putting the idea into practice. I wasn’t entirely satisfied at first, especially as there wasn’t enough sun and shade. So I set off again today and found another zebra crossing. But after an hour of trying – and, above all, waiting for there to be no cars – I have to admit: I much prefer yesterday’s photo.

Entschleunigung.

Slowing down means learning to wait again. Especially in an age when everything seems to be available instantly, this can be a very healing process.

This is a very distinctive, though rarely used, bus stop in #Hannover. On Sundays, you wait 15 minutes for a bus here. In the background is the Anzeiger Tower, where the news magazine "Der Spiegel" was founded in 1947 and the weekly magazine "Stern" in 1948. For younger readers: It was like social media, but only once a week or once a month, and you had to walk to the newsstand to get it.

I spent almost an hour here yesterday until I finally got the shot exactly the way I wanted it.

This is the #courtyard of the hotel directly opposite #Budapest #Keleti railway station, where I spent last night. Over the past 16 hours, I’ve managed to take lots of interesting photos in #Hungary, but this one is somehow special. I had to ask several people to help me get permission to enter the courtyard in the first place.

I took this photo with my #fisheye lens. I then removed the typical barrel distortion. Today’s #PhotoSuggestion asks for perspective distortion – which is why I think this photo fits quite well.

Flying city rats (also known as pigeons) are true survivalists. In environments created by and for humans, hardly any thought has ever been given to even the most minimal safety measures for any animal. Day after day, most of them manage not to get run over by buses, not to die from electric shocks, not to sit on barbed wire on window sills... and in the end, they even survive on a diet that would make any nutritionist break out in a cold sweat.

This particular specimen was sufficiently irritated by my language skills in Paris. That's why she spent a few seconds giving me that exact look. But how do you say ‘putt, putt, putt’ in French?

This marvel of technology hangs in the GDR Museum in the Harz Mountains – an analogue telephone. One that had to be ordered years in advance. It probably hung in a police station or a Stasi office.

In principle, the museum in the town of Thale is worth a visit, even if you didn't spend your childhood in this country. As someone who did, I can say that what is on display there was really our everyday life.

Atlas.

The western side of Benther Berg in #Hannover is one of the westernmost points of the city. And, as in Greek mythology, there is also a titan here who supports the vault of heaven. However, it was extremely cold that day, and he only managed to hold out for a short time 🙃.

There was a time when I walked past here almost every day for many months. I like trees like this and enjoy looking for new angles and new ideas to showcase them.

I found this remnant of a stream dam in my hometown of Chemnitz when I was out walking with my father years ago. My idea for the chim project was only a few days old at the time. And the #PhotoSuggestion “with help” is exaggerated - even with a great deal of force, nothing turned here.
