As Aric Sleeper reported in his July 30 - Aug 5 cover story in the Monterey County Weekly,
The Bicycling Monterey URL "has served as an information hub for all things bicycle-related in the county since 2009 and runs entirely on donations and elbow grease.” montereycountynow.com/news/cov…

Our gratitude to faithful Pedal Pusher @Weather_Rock_Wx for her Aug 5 donation in support of Bicycling Monterey’s general operating expenses. So appreciated!

"South Carolina is now one of a dozen states with a statewide safety stop law. The details vary, but the basic principle has spread across red and blue states alike: people on bikes must slow down, yield to anyone with the right of way, and stop whenever safety requires it. Some states apply the rule only to stop signs; others also let riders proceed through red lights after stopping and yielding.” And in #SouthCarolina the bike friendliness extends further: "Right turns on red require slowing and yielding but not a complete stop.”

Thanks to the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike for their helpful chart, which includes:
Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Idaho
Minnesota
New Mexico
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Oregon
South Carolina
Utah
Washington
Also, Anchorage, Alaska and Washington, D.C.

#BikeNite A7 For some —but unfortunately not all types of— reflective pant cuff /ankle band straps, using 2 connected may solve issue of 1 being too small for calf of many people. #AllBodiesOnBikes #BikeEquity For example, these distributed free by California Highway Patrol really oughta be longer than 14 inches.

In the new Look Both Ways episode, Wes and I talked about cars stopping in bike lanes "for just a minute."

It's a bigger problem than many many realize. Beyond being dangerous, blocking bike lanes deters people (esp women) from biking in the first place.

Our gratitude to @JohnMcCarthyEsq for his generous donation today in support of Bicycling Monterey’s advocacy projects. This week our advocacy work has ranged from statewide advocacy efforts as Monterey County’s local #CalBike partner to communications with journalists to teaching bike-friendly driver’s ed, and more. Having John and other donors value this work is not only essential on a practical level, it also boosts our spirits, fueling us in continuing to do all we can as a bicycling advocate. bikemonterey.org/about/financi…

John has also had our back in another way—as a volunteer: He’s researched California law and confirmed that our understanding was accurate about an issue sometimes wrongly reported by media.

John’s professional focus is motorcycle wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases in Northern California: californiasmotorcyclelawfirm.c…

After providing introductory bike-friendly drivers training today—to all youth at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center—we made our typical rounds in our county’s seat and largest city. Today that included Acosta Plaza and two local bike shops on our route.

We also stopped to snap photos of some of our favorite infrastructure (short of bikeways with a physical barrier): Bike boxes at intersections, like this one on West Alisal Street at Lincoln Avenue, Salinas.

We’ve truly been wondering how in the world we’re gonna be able to keep up this bike advocacy work on such a meager budget. Then Life stepped in with a big surprise today: A very generous donation from local bike commuter and faithful community volunteer Frank Henderson.

It meant even more because Frank has been a Monterey County bike hero in our heart since 2011, when we were seeking volunteers to help with a community bike fair in Seaside.

In 2012 he took on the role of bike tech instructor when we founded the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center bike ed program, which he continues to volunteer for in 2026.

We were also heartened by Frank's encouraging words today, which accompanied his donation: "Thank you for all you have done and will do in the future!”

Californians, learn why the California Bicycle Coalition (#CalBike), #BicyclingMonterey and so many other CalBike partners support the following proposed legislation. bikemonterey.org/calbike-coali…

AB 2168 (Wicks): ATP Reform. This is the bill to expand the definition of Safe Routes to Transit, require strong accountability for agencies not delivering projects, and advancing leveraging of STIP funds for ATP networks.

SB 569 (Blakespear): Bike Lane Integrity: This bill aims to prevent local removal of installed bikeway projects due to concerns over lost parking and traffic congestion.

Day 4 #biking in Piemonte 🇮🇹: Colle della Fauniera (Colle dei Morti, Col Cuneo). One of the nicest passes I’ve ridden so far. The way up from Valgrana has very little motorized traffic. There’s a monastery on the way up and a Pantani statue on top.

Day two #biking Piemont 🇮🇹 from Susa on to Colle delle Finestre and then on Strada dell’ Assietta. Fine #gravel, boneshaking gravel and a shortcut that turned out to be rather a MTB trail.

We haven’t been doing much night riding lately. After biking in to town to pick up a Father's Day card for two special dads, we have a fresh memory of one of our favorite things about night riding: There are usually far fewer cars on the roads!

Another favorite thing: Being prepared to easily take theft-prone items in with us when we went inside the card store, thanks to having an Ortlieb Vario Lite hybrid backpack-bicycle bag. Having that terrific bag is only because of the kind generosity of Jeff Scully, Ortlieb USA LLC, who donated it in 2025 as part of a thoughtful care package of Ortlieb products, in support of our direct outreach by bike. bikemonterey.org/about/financi…

Another favorite thing: The card store employee who welcomed us to bring our bike indoors. That’s especially appreciated because there’s no bike rack or well-lit, line-of-sight place to lock up.

Today’s bike ride followed an afternoon of #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, then reviewing AB 2168 (ATP Reform) and SB 569 (Bike Lane Integrity), and other office tasks. Evening was garden work until dark. Outdoors is definitely our favorite place to be, no matter what we’re up to. (And yes, took our laptop outdoors for the meeting too.)

Thank you, dear earth, for renewing us without fail!

No town errands today, so our ride was simply in our rural area. We saw only one other person biking—a young man wearing a Salinas High School Cowboys Racing MTB team jersey. Had a nice chat, including about some spots where bIke lockers are needed. See some Cowboys history here: bikemonterey.org/category/chil….

Such a beautiful day. Despite our doubts last eve (after hours of garden labor), we had a wonderful ride in to Monterey today for Bluegrass Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.

A special joy was meeting @NoRomBasic and his spouse, who came for Bike Chat (bikemonterey.org/bike-to-blueg…) in the Jay Bartow Memorial Garden (bikemonterey.org/rest-stop-tip…).

A caller this morning, asking about Bicycling Monterey’s May 31 Bike Month event bikemonterey.org/bike-to-blueg…, is from Pacific Grove. He plans to bike to our Monterey destination in time for the optional free pancake breakfast, served 10-11am. He asked about the bike train pick-up stations, e.g., Monterey Peninsula College. Please give us a call bikemonterey.org/contact-me to let us know if you want to bike with us, or have questions.

Okay bike nerd friends - tell me your thoughts on wireless shifters. I'm not too excited about the idea of keeping firmware updated on the drivetrain for an otherwise acoustic vehicle.

1/2 We biked in to First Presbyterian Church in Monterey today for the ordination ceremony for Cory Pina, Curator for Spiritual Life at All Saints Day School in Carmel Valley. Cory has volunteered many hours to boost Bicycling Monterey’s WordPress skills.

A big highlight of today’s ride came from our swinging by #CaliRoots to see how packed the bike valet station was today (surprise—not full at all). But the joy of that stop was meeting Carlos (pictured), who was doing Cali Roots volunteering nearby. He does road and mountain biking and is a bike-to-work commuter, using the Monterey-Salinas Transit bike-and-ride option to get to work from his Soledad home. We had a great chat about e-bikes, e-motos, and more, and we hope to rope this cool guy in as a bike advocacy voice for Salinas Valley residents, e.g., on TAMC’s bike-ped committee. bikemonterey.org/monthly-meeti…
