I am so 100% serious about this: putting little streamers on my bike handlebars has made drivers approximately a million times less asshole. They wait behind me when I’m going up a hill. They let me turn left. They give me space when passing. It’s genuinely bonkers how much nicer it’s made my experience of urban cycling.

Second ride in of the week today despite my watch telling me I am not recovering well. Because reasons.
Felt fine actually and it was nice and sunny! Not as sprightly as Monday but still fairly swift and don’t feel too bad as a consequence. I woke up before my 0430 alarm (unlike Monday where it took a few minutes for me to respond to a buzzing wrist) and was out of the door before 5. It’s actually better to leave after 5 to avoid peak traffic outside Leeds but I was up and ready.
I’ll be interested to see what my watch thinks tomorrow as right now I feel fine!
Train home!
This morning I am departing on another bike&train trip through Northern Europe. I will let my followers discover where I go, but this will include three Scandinavian countries and also about three weeks of pure cycling (except for a few ferries).
The aim of the 🧵 is of course to show that 🚲 and 🚂 can well be used together for international travel, despite some complexities and plenty of space for improvement.

Biking builds trust. Great bike streets build friendships.
In another city, this cluster of six middle-aged guys might each be driving their own SUV to the pub or the grocery store.
On bikes in #Utrecht NL these guys can relax, talk, and get to know each other.
Some days of bikepacking in eastern and northern Germany with some friends. We found some nice spots for hanging out and spending the night. Though, when cycling at slow pace (15 km/h) for two days, I realized that I might have to change my Fediverse handle (UEB meaning “Ultra Endurance Bummeln” meaning strolling around or taking it slow). Actually, I’m not that slow and I prefer to cycle at a pace of 20 to 30 km/h. Also, I don’t like to take breaks for longer than one hour.
What does “taking it slow” when cycling mean for you? Do you think that I should reframe my motto and/or change my social media handle?

I've been tinkering with the brakes on a friend's bike and I can't tell if I'm missing something or if they're Just That Bad™. I can barely get the rear wheel to skid if I apply all my hand strength to the lever, most of the time it just slips through the brakes.
They're long-reach center pull calipers, which I usually consider dubious, but at least they're cast aluminum and not stamped steel.
I tried replacing the pads with newer ones, since the old ones seemed like they might have hardened.
The original levers were for long pull brakes, which seemed wrong to me so I tried a short pull lever and it made only a slight improvement.
The braking surface of the rims was painted black. As a last resort, I sanded the paint back to bare aluminum on one wheel, thinking that might be more grippy than high-gloss paint.
Nothing has made sufficient improvement. Suggestions welcome.

For the past five days, I have bicycled along the river Main in Germany with my Brompton. I started in Frankfurt/Main and worked my way along the winding river upstream towards east. The distance was about 380 kilometers. I have not decided how to continue this trip. I am still heavily checking the weather forecast for the coming days. Let's see.
I keep forgetting that if I want to find _real_ bike campervans I need to use German while searching. Granted, my vocabulary is about 20 words, but 'fahrradwohnwagen' and 'fahrradwohnmobil'' takes you far.
