Oh, I know living here would have its challenges, but when you're in it...the land, the sea, the sky...this most magnificent part of California makes the rest of the coast seem like a shadow of the real thing.

Taken in Shelter Cove one summer's eve: "Not all those who wander are lost...".

The Distant Current – A lone juniper clings to the canyon's edge, high above the Canadian River. I shot this on a hike back in December 2022 with a Lumix DC-GX9 (borrowed from my husband, as my own camera at the time was...not doing well). #NewMexico #river #CanadianRiver #americanwest #americansouthwest #nature #landscape #outdoors #hiking #winter #canyon #tree #juniper #Panasonic #Lumix #micro43

If you lived in Pacific Palisades and gazed out to Malibu...after years of having been deprived, a sight like this feels like coming home, only it's somehow better than what you remembered.

Strange, isn't it, how all the best places for this ancient Japanese art are on the Pacific Rim, though they may be separated by great distances...

A view that would remind many an artist across the sea of home, if only in a small way: "Aerial Perspective".

"Take my breath away" is what I dubbed this one, for what other reaction is there to a sight like this, when you look down from Aprez-Vous summit to the Jackson valley, and up at an atmospheric river from parts unknown, bringing what we desire most of all: fresh powder. It's past equinox; it won't be long now...

There's a special magic to places like this, when the clock nears midnight, and the moon rises on the pounding surf below the cliff. No wonder every light in the house is on: for here at the end of the world, "Not all who wander are lost".

Taken by me in Shelter Cove, California one clear summer's night.

Life pro tip: if you loved the billowing skies back east but the blue-dome skies of the southwest bore you, try the *northwest* instead. Warm dry days still, but with a *lot* more cloudscapes: I see stuff like this almost every summer day I've gone. There's a *reason* rich people love it out there, and it's not just because they pay less taxes...

I've cursed LA a lot lately, but looking back on that fateful first visit, I'm struck by how there's no feeling quite like discovering that yes, every flicker onto the silver screen that defined your childhood is *real*. Even if only in lonesome glimpses of atmosphere...

Captured by me one February, looking northwestward from Santa Monica: "Malibu Fading".

We get a full-fledged outer band from a tropical storm here in Southern California, and what does it look like? More marine-layer-esque stratiform, of course. Give me more of this, please...I witnessed these beauties on the road in Wyoming last November (yes, In *winter*...the High Plains are something else...).

A photo I call "Chasing the Storm"...

Eleven Mile Reservoir with Spinney Mountain and more-distant peaks. I had gone up into the mountains to try to escape some very hot weather, but despite being at an elevation of about 8600 ft (2620 m), it was still quite hot up there (88° F/31°C)– and the sun's intensity seemed greater at that altitude. - Eleven Mile State Park, Colorado, USA #Colorado #lake #americanwest #nature #landscape #outdoors #hiking #summer #mountains #RockyMountains #Fujifilm #Tamron

The most uninhabitable shirt-sleeve environment in the solar system...and you don't have to go as far as Artemis II to visit it. In fact, it's within a day's drive of Los Angeles. But beware: you might not come out the same as you went in.

Like many things Pacific Northwest few outsiders are aware of it, but wine country extends into *Idaho*, courtesy of the gorges of the Columbia and Snake River systems that place you in a realm evocative of an alien planet.

A capture of that vibe one summer evening in far western Idaho: "Golden Hour in Wine Country".

A scene you can *easily* picture the silhouette of a horseman strutting into. Haunted? Supernatural? A "mere" legendary gunslinger? Or perhaps just your everyday cowgirl out to see the stars when the clouds part and the moon shines...

They lie down a road seldom traveled, but it's perhaps the most beautiful grassland in the world: the Palouse Hills. When the fields bloom and the long, warm days of summer hit them just right, it does something for the soul...

"Black Sand, Kiss Me Home". Iceland? Nope! California...but a part of the state so remote they call it "The Lost Coast", for the main roads don't go there. Thinking of the light of the sun, the unique sound of that surf, the spectacular beauty of the landscape...I have to go back. Some day...

People who say the California coast is soooo crowded must not have ever left Los Angeles; just a few hours north, it gets really remote, really fast...remote enough to see the stars as surely as in the desert, but with a marine quality to the atmosphere all its own.

Taken by me one summer on the central coast: "Big Sky over Big Sur".

The iconic, giant cross of Groom, Texas. It stands at 190 feet tall (58 m) and is positioned just off historic Route 66 and modern Interstate 40. I did NOT wake up to witness/shoot the eclipse at 5 am the other day, but instead, I got several moonrise shots the previous evening near Groom. I actually didn't get my planned shot, because clouds low on the eastern horizon prevented it, but I got several hectic consolation shots, of which this was one. Because it is still *that* time of the year: when the snow flies, the landscape has that blanket of champagne white, and the air itself is sharp as the pine needles around you. OK, I know not the best poetry, but I really do love this picture I took at Jackson Hole: "Winter Wonderland" (I'm not the best skier, but I know a fun slope when I see one).
