DiscogsDienstag: Crime & The City Solution – Room Of Lights

Die Band Crime & The City Solution ist wie Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds aus der australischen Post-Punk-Band The Birthday Party hervorgegangen. Sänger Simon Bonney gründete die Band und brachte Musiker wie Mick Harvey und Rowland S. Howard mit, die vorher bei The Birthday Party gespielt hatten. Harvey war sogar bis 2009 ebenfalls bei Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds tätig. 1986 erschien bei Mute Records das erste Studioalbum von Crime & The City Solution, aufgenommen in Berlin (Hansa Tonstudios) und London.

Das Album namens Room of Lights klingt düster und gefühlvoll. Die Musik ist langsam, manchmal fast traurig, aber sehr ausdrucksstark. Die Texte sind oft nachdenklich und erzählen von Einsamkeit, Sehnsucht und innerer Unruhe. Mir drängt sich ein Vergleich der beiden Sänger Simon Bonney und Nick Cave auf, sie haben beide eine tiefe, eindringliche Stimme und eine ähnliche, erzählende Gesangsweise. Bonney singt dabei etwas zurückhaltender, Cave meist dramatischer – aber klanglich und stilistisch sind sie sich durchaus nah.

Ein Höhepunkt der Bandgeschichte ist ihr Auftritt im Film Der Himmel über Berlin von Wim Wenders. Dort spielen sie den Song „Six Bells Chime“ live – eine Szene, die vielen Fans im Gedächtnis geblieben ist und der Band internationale Aufmerksamkeit brachte. (Das erinnert mich daran, dass ich mal ein GothDiscoInferno-Special mit Filmmusik machen möchte.)

„Room of Lights“ ist ein Album für Menschys, die Musik mit Tiefe schätzen. Der Einstieg mag nicht leicht sein, doch wer sich darauf einlässt, entdeckt eine Band, die Gefühle auf besondere Weise in Klang verwandelt. Tanzbar ist diese Musik größtenteils nicht – vielmehr wirkt sie wie der Soundtrack für einen romantisch-melancholischen Abend: getragen, gefühlvoll und voller dunkler Schönheit. Mein Favorit ist der Opener „Right Man, Wrong Man“ mit der wunderschönen Textzeile:

I build it up with one hand
Yeah and I pulled it down
Well I build it up I pulled it down

Right man – wrong man

Den Text schrieb Simon Bonney mit seiner Frau Bronwyn Adams, die auch das Cover gestaltet und bei „The Brother Song“ Geige gespielt hat. Insgesamt hat sie bei sechs von acht Liedern lyrisch mitgewirkt.
