Today in Labor History August 25, 1921, the Battle of Blair Mountain began in Logan County, West Virginia. It was the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War, and the largest labor uprising in U.S. history. 10,000-15,000 coal miners battled 3,000 cops, private cops and vigilantes, who were backed by the coal bosses. Up to 100 miners died in the fighting, along with 10-30 Baldwin-Felts detectives and three national guards. Nearly 1,000 people were arrested. One million rounds were fired. And the government bombed striking coal miners by air, using homemade bombs and poison gas left over from World War I. This was the second time the government had used planes to bomb its own citizens within the U.S. (the first was against African American during the racist Tulsa pogrom, earlier that same year).

The Battle of Matewan had occurred just a year before. Baldwin-Felt private police tried to arrest Sheriff Sid Hatfield, who supported the miners, using a bogus arrest warrant. Unbeknownst to the detectives, armed miners had surrounded them. No one knows who shot first, but when the smoke had cleared, there were seven dead detectives, including Albert and Lee Felts, and four dead townspeople, including the mayor. On August 1, 1921, surviving members of Baldwin-Felts assassinated Hatfield in broad daylight, on the steps of Welch County courthouse, as his wife watched in horror. As news of his death spread, miners began arming themselves and threatened to march to the anti-union stronghold of Logan County to overthrow Sheriff Dan Chaffin, the coal company tyrant who murdered miners with impunity. Fearing a bloodbath, Mother Jones tried to dissuade them from marching. Many accused her of losing her nerve. The march led to all-out war, as the authorities sent in police, private cops, and deputized vigilantes to battle the miners.

Today in Labor History August 23, 1927: Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian immigrant anarchists living in the U.S., were executed murder during a botched robbery in Boston. However, there was no evidence linking them to the crime. They both had alibis, too, including an official at the Italian consulate. Their trial was rife with racism and political bias. The judge, Webster Thayer, said the following about Vanzetti: "This man, although he may not have actually committed the crime attributed to him, is nevertheless morally culpable, because he is the enemy of our existing institutions." The jury foreman, who was a former cop, said he didn’t care if they were innocent: "Damn them. They ought to hang anyway."

The author, John Dos Passos, who came to Boston to cover the trial as a journalist, was arrested at a solidarity protest along with writer Dorothy Parker. Einstein, H.G. Wells, and Bernard Shaw all appealed for Sacco and Vanzetti lives. The IWW called for a 3-day nationwide General Strike, which was heeded by 1,132 out of the 1,167 miners in Colorado’s Walsenburg coal district, leading to the Colorado coal strike of 1927. The day after their execution, there were violent demonstrations around the world, including in Tokyo, Geneva, London, and Paris. In South America, wildcat solidarity strikes completely shut down many factories. In Germany, 3 protesters were shot dead. In Boston, over 200,000 came to the funeral procession. Upton Sinclair’s novel, “Boston,” explores the trial, and Vanzetti's life. Woody Guthrie recorded a series of songs known as the Ballads of Sacco & Vanzetti. In 1971, Joan Baez recorded her song "Here's to You," with music composed by Ennio Morricone, a tribute to Sacco & Vanzetti that went on to become a symbol for the human rights movement of the 1970s.

Today in Labor History August 18, 1920: The Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. This guaranteed women's right to vote. Congress first introduced a women's suffrage amendment in 1878. Before 1776, women were allowed to vote in several of the colonies, but by 1807 all the state constitutions had denied them this right. In 1848, the Seneca Falls convention adopted the Declaration of Sentiments, calling for equality between the sexes and the right to vote. The Nineteenth Amendment enfranchised 26 million American women just before the 1920 U.S. presidential election. Newly enfranchised women prioritized a reform agenda, including the Sheppard–Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act of 1921, which expanded maternity care during the 1920s. This was the first federal social security law and was huge until Congress let it lapse in 1929.

In 1920, only 36% of eligible women voted (compared with 68% of men). This was due to barriers like literacy tests, long residency requirements, and poll taxes. By 1960, women were voting in greater numbers than men. However, 3 million women south of the Mason–Dixon line remained disenfranchised. Election officials regularly utilized fraud, intimidation, poll taxes, and state violence to block their access to the polls. In 1926, officials in Birmingham, Alabama beat African American women who were trying to register to vote. These practices continued until the 24th Amendment, in 1962, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And they continue today with a host of new voting restrictions being imposed in mostly Republican states.

Today in Labor History, July 23, 1944: Madeleine Riffaud, 19, got off her bicycle, pulled out a gun, and assassinated a Nazi military officer as he took a stroll over the river Seine. She was pursued by French collaborators with the Nazis, beaten, tortured and imprisoned in a concentration camp. She escaped, but was later caught, eventually being released in a prisoner swap. She then joined the armed uprising against the Nazis. She had said she wanted to murder a Nazi in broad daylight to encourage the demoralized population. At the age of 18, she worked as a midwife in a Grenoble sanitarium, where she also helped hide Jews and Resistance Fighters, and helped operate a clandestine printing press.

After the war, she was inspired and encouraged to write by the surrealist poet, Paul Eluard. She became a journalist for the communist newspaper L'Humanité, and other left-wing publications, reporting on anti-colonial rebellions in Algeria and Vietnam. She saw her reporting as a continuation of her anti-fascist fighting, writing that "a people who oppress another can never be a free people." In another quote, she said: “I didn't want France to do elsewhere what the Nazis wanted to do here.” She also wrote poetry and a memoir: On l'appelait Rainer (Called Rainer). Her first poetry collection was published in 1945, with a preface by Eluard, and a portrait of herself on the cover, drawn by Pablo Picasso. In 1974, after working in a Paris hospital, she wrote her best-seller “Les Linges de la nuit” exposing the poor working conditions of hospital workers in France. She died, at the age of 100, in 2024.

Today in Labor History June 30, 1839: The Amistad left the Havana harbor to deliver 53 enslaved Mende people to a sugar plantation. Portuguese slave traders had illegally transported the Mende from west Africa to Cuba, in violation of European treaties against the slave trade. On July 1, Joseph Cinque led a revolt. Armed with machete-like cane knives, they killed the captain and several crew members, but spared the two slave owners so they could direct the ship back to Africa. The crew tricked them and sailed up the Atlantic coast, presuming they would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy, which captured the ship near Montauk, Long Island. President Martin Van Buren wanted to send the prisoners back to Spanish authorities in Cuba to stand trial for mutiny. Abolitionists raised funds for the mutineers’ defense. Former President John Quincy Adams represented them in court. Adams was one of the few early U.S. presidents to not own slaves, to support the abolitionist movement, and to oppose the war with Mexico. In 1841, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the mutineers had been illegally enslaved and had rebelled in self-defense and ordered them freed. In November, 1841, 35 of the Amistad mutineers were sent back to what is now known as Sierra Leone.

Today in Labor History June 6, 1894: Colorado’s governor sent in the state militia to support the Cripple Creek miners' strike, the only time in history that a state militia was used to help a workers’ struggle, rather than to suppress it. The mine owners were demanding a 10-hour day without an increase in pay. In response, the miners went on strike. There was considerable violence from both sides during the strike, led by the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). On March 16, some miners ambushed, shot and beat some sheriff’s deputies. The judge, a WFM member, let the miners off, but charged the deputies with carrying concealed weapons. Furious, the Sheriff arrested 20 union leaders. Meanwhile, the mine owners conspired to bring in hundreds of scabs and deputized vigilantes. When the new deputies marched on the strikers’ camp, the miners blew up several mine structures, forcing the deputies to flee. The mine owners hired hundreds more vigilantes for their army. When he heard about the size of the miner owners’ force, the governor declared the deputies illegal and sent in state troops to defend the miners.

On June 5, the day before the state troops arrived, the mine owners’ army began cutting telegraph lines and arresting and beating reporters and hundreds of town residents, including many who weren’t miners. When the state troops arrived, there were already gun battles going on between the vigilante army and the miners. However, the state troops gained control of the town relatively quickly and the mine owners disbanded their army and sent them home. 300 miners were arrested, but only four were convicted. And the populist governor pardoned them all. The WFM won, keeping the 8-hour day and their $3/day wages. And, they were so popular because of their victory, that they easily organized most of the other industries in the region (e.g., waitresses, laundry workers, bartenders, newsboys) into 54 new locals.

The Cripple Creek strike was a prelude for the Colorado Labor Wars (1903-1904), led by future IWW cofounded Big Bill Haywood, and the Colorado Coalfield War (1913-1914), which historian Thomas G. Andrews called the “deadliest strike in the history of the United States” and which included the Ludlow Massacre. Hundreds were killed in the Coalfield War. During the Labar Wars of 1903-1904, James McParland ran the Pinkerton agency in Denver. He had served as an agent provocateur in the Pennsylvania miners’ union in the 1870s. The state convicted and executed 20 innocent Irish coal miners because of his testimony. (I have depicted that story in my novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill.”) Like he did in Pennsylvania, McParlan tried to sabotage the WFM by placing spies and agents provocateur within the union.

Today in Labor History March 23, 1871: Far left workers proclaimed communes in Lyon and Marseilles. The Paris Commune began March 18. Workers, including Cluseret and Mikhail Bakunin and other anarchists and left socialists of the International Workingmen’s Association, had tried to create a commune in Lyon in 1870, as well. Prior to this, Cluseret fought the bourgeois moderates during the 1848 Paris uprising. And in 1860, he joined Garabaldi in his fight for Italian independence. In 1860, when William Sewell made a plea for European generals, he joined Union army with letters of support from Garibaldi, serving as a colonel, commanding troops in Shenandoah Valley. He eventually rose to the rank of general, but eventually quit when he was accused of insubordination for complaining about the abuse of civilians by Union troops. After that, he joined the Irish Republican cause, managing to escape a death sentence by the British. During the Paris Commune, Cluseret served as Minister of War. However, when he refused to arrest Monsignior Darboy, Archbishop of Paris, he was arrested for collusion with the enemy.

Cluseret once said, “the U.S. presents that strange anomaly of enslaved labor in a free nation. Politically free, the worker is socially the capitalists’ serf.”

Marx called him an opportunist and an overambitious babbler.

Today in Labor History May 21, 1979: The White Night Riot occurred in San Francisco, California, the day before Harvey Milk’s birthday. On November 10, 1978, ex-cop and former city supervisor, Dan White, murdered Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, and the popular progressive mayor, George Moscone. His murder trial concluded on May 21. The jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter. However, the prosecutor had asked for a finding of first-degree murder. It was, after all, premeditated. This verdict was likely influenced by the absurd Twinkie Defense, in which his lawyer argued that it could not have been premeditated due to his diminished capacity and depression, a symptom of which was his recent shift from a healthy diet to a junk food diet. A similar defense had failed repeatedly to get students excused from exams and school detentions.

Needless to say, the public was outraged. However, there had been decades of police harassment and physical abuse of San Francisco’s LGBTQ community lead up to this miscarriage of justice. Tensions were already high. And this ruling, which virtually absolved White of his homophobic crime, was the torch to the powder keg. Things began with a peaceful march through the Castro district. But when the crowd arrived at City Hall, violence began. People attacked the windows of City Hall. When the cops tried to protect the building, people hurled rocks and bottles at them, forcing them to run inside. Where ever the cops showed up, people threw rocks at them. At least a dozen cop cars were torched. They busted windows in the financial district and in government buildings.

Many people were injured. The riot caused hundreds of thousands of dollars-worth of property damage to City Hall. And when the riot was finally subdued, the cops made a retaliatory raid on the Elephant Bar, in the Castro District. Cops in riot gear beat patrons. They arrested 24 people.

Furthermore, the double assassination of Moscone and Milk dramatically altered the political landscape of San Francisco. Under Moscone and Milk, the city was moving in a progressive, pro-neighborhood direction. With the new mayor, Diane Feinstein, city politics returned to the traditional, conservative, pro-Chamber of Commerce, law and order framework that had preceded Moscone and Milk, and the followed after them to this day.

Today in Labor History May 18, 1979: An Oklahoma jury ruled in favor of the estate of atomic worker Karen Silkwood. Kerr-McGee Nuclear Company was ordered to pay $505,000 in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages for negligence leading to Silkwood’s plutonium contamination. On appeal, the court reduced the settlement to a pitiful $5,000, the estimated value of her property losses. In 1984, the Supreme Court restored the original verdict, but Kerr-McGee again threatened to appeal. Ultimately, Silkwood’s family settled out of court for $1.38 million and the company never had to admit any wrongdoing.

Silkwood first started working at Kerr-McGee in 1972. She joined the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers union and participated in a strike. After the strike, her comrades elected her to the union’s bargaining committee. She was the first woman to attain that status at Kerr-McGee. In this role, one of her duties was to investigate health and safety issues. Not surprisingly, she discovered numerous violations, including exposure of workers to radioactive contamination. The union accused Kerr-McGee of falsifying inspection records, manufacturing faulty fuel rods and other safety violations. After testifying to the Atomic Energy Commission, Silkwood discovered that her own body and home were contaminated with radiation. Her body contained 400 times the legal limit for plutonium contamination and she was expelling contaminated air from her lungs. Her house was so contaminated they had to destroy much of her personal property.

Later, she decided to go public with documentation proving the company’s negligence. She left a meeting with union officials in order to meet a New York Times journalist. She brought a binder and packet of documents supporting her allegations with her. However, she never made it, dying in a suspicious car crash. The documents were never found. Some journalists believe she was rammed from behind by another vehicle. Investigators noted damage to the rear of her car that would be consistent with this hypothesis. She had also received death threats shortly before her death. However, no one has yet substantiated the claims of foul play.

Today in Labor History May 15, 1969: Police fought students in the Battle for People's Park at the University of California Berkeley, California. The battle was over a small strip of land that the students had claimed as community commons. Governor Ronald Reagan sent in National Guards to reclaim the Park. Police gunfire killed a bystander, James Rector, and wounded 60 others, including Alan Blanchard, who was blinded for life. Street fighting continued for 17 days. Another 150 demonstrators would be shot and wounded. The battle for the park has continued ever since, with the university continuing to claim ownership and threatening to turn the park into everything from units of student housing to a parking lot. The defenders of the park have done numerous direct actions over the past 55 years to defend the park, provide mutual aid, provide free food and clothes to unhoused folks, and offer community classes. In 1992, cops shot and killed Park Defender Rosebud Denovo, after she broke into the basement of the residence of UC Berkeley Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien. As recently as 2024, the cops have attacked, beaten, and/or arrested park defenders. Also in that year, the California Supreme Court sided with the University and its plans to build student housing on the park. In 2025, the university announced that the new housing would be named after Disability Rights activist Judy Heumann.

Meanwhile, we've got the big unions cutting sellout deals with the bosses, telling members there's no other choice but to pay ever increasing amounts of our paychecks for healthcare premiums, that we're lucky to get 1-2% raises, far below the rate of inflation, when others are getting canned or taking pay cuts.

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we remember the Orangeburg Massacre, which occurred on February 8, 1968 in South Carolina, when highway patrolmen opened fire on black student protesters from South Carolina State, who were trying to integrate a bowling alley. They killed 3 African American students and wounded 33. These were the first student demonstrators killed by the police in the 1960s. 2 days prior, students held a sit-in at the bowling alley. When the police arrested them, hundreds of students arrived from Claflin College and South Carolina State to protest the arrests. As tensions grew, the governor called out the National Guard and Highway Patrol to “keep the order.” 9 cops were charged with deprivation of rights under color of law, but all were acquitted. But one of the student protestors, Cleveland Sellers, was convicted of several riot charges. In 1960, students and others marched through Orangeberg to protest segregation. Police and firefighters attacked them. They arrested 400 and imprisoned them in outdoors in a cattle stockade.

Today in Labor History February 8, 1943: Lepa Svetozara Radić, a 17-year-old communist, anti-fascist fighter from Bosnia, was executed by the Nazis for shooting at German troops. As they fastened the noose around her neck, they offered her amnesty if she would reveal her comrades' and leaders' names. She responded that she was not a traitor and that they would reveal themselves when they avenged her death. She also cried out: "Long live the Communist Party, and partisans! Fight, people, for your freedom! Do not surrender to the evildoers! I will be killed, but there are those who will avenge me!" Lepa had been a member of the Communist Party since she was 15. Around that same time, her family had been arrested by the Ustaše, a Croatian fascist and ultranationalist organization. Lepa and her sister, Dara, escaped. She then joined the 7th partisan company of the 2nd Krajiški Detachment. She was captured by the Nazis in February, 1943, after using up all of her ammunition, during a fierce gunbattle. She and her comrades continued to fight with their bare hands, until they were overpowered by blows by German rifle butts.

Today in honor of Black History Month, we celebrate the life of Frederick Douglass, who was born on February 7, 1817, in Tuckahoe, Maryland. After escaping slavery in 1838, he became a national leader of the abolition movement. He also supported the women’s suffrage movement and ran for vice president as running mate to Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket. He opposed colonialism and imperialism, including the U.S. war with Mexico. In addition to being a brilliant orator, writer and social justice activist, Douglass was also the most photographed man of the 19th century. He sat for over 160 portraits, always taking a dignified pose. He considered photography a tool for creating a positive image of black men.

Douglass wrote that "experience demonstrates that there may be a slavery of wages only a little less galling and crushing in its effects than chattel slavery, and that this slavery of wages must go down with the other." In 1869, along with Isaac Meyers, he organized the First U.S. National Colored Convention and the Colored National Labor Union. At the time, white unions routinely refused to accept African American members or to show solidarity with black workers. Additionally, employers often hired black scabs during strikes by white unions, while the KKK often recruited within white unions, exacerbating mistrust. Over time, the union became more and more political (much like most modern unions), until it became a de facto branch of the Republican Party (which in those days was known as the party of abolition).

Today in Labor History September 27, 1936: The Battle of Holbeck Moor, between fascists and antifascists, took place in Leeds, England. British fascist, Oswald Mosely, tried to lead a march of his British Union of Fascists through the Leylands, a working-class Jewish neighborhood. The city government banned them from marching there, fearing riots, so they chose an alternate route, in Holbeck Moor. Antifascists, led by the Communist Party of Great Britain began organizing workers and community members to resist the fascists. The Labour Party refused to work with the Communists. The night before the march, fascists painted swastikas throughout the Leylands and attacked Jewish community members. On September 27, the fascists marched to Holbeck Moor, but were met by 30,000 antifascists. Police protected the fascists as Mosely attempted to speak, who was drowned out by booing and jeering. Antifascists began throwing rocks and objects at the fascists, giving Mosely a gash beneath his eye. Realizing they were vastly outnumbered, the fascists retreated.
