Several of these #NeoNazis live less than 30 minutes from me. We have a few neo Nazi groups who are active around #VictoriaBC #VancouverIsland. The #Nazis in BC & in pockets around #Canada are emboldened by Trump, his #fascist peons/ICE, seeing attacks on immigrants without due process & no accountability. A few of these bigots in BC are nasty #WhiteSupremacist people who worked with kids too. All NeoNazis should be doxxed - their employers should know what kind of person they are employing & fire any Nazis on payroll.

It's raining on Vancouver Island. What I like about this part of Canada is that rain does not stop people from going outside.

I took this photo earlier this week.

Hey, it's #WildlifeWednesday ! To celebrate, here's an American mink (Neovison vison). I often see them on the shore where they forage for fish and crustaceans.

Ceci est un vison d'Amérique. Je les vois souvent sur la côte lorsqu'ils sont à la recherche de poissons et de crustacés.

Your daily bear photo, courtesy of yours truly.

Context for new followers: I took this photo in September during the salmon run on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This bear was keeping an eye on salmon going up a stream, hoping to catch a few of them. As you can judge from its body shape, it is very successful. 😁

Note that I do not approach bears, I use a telephoto lens. I practice ethical photography.

Current situation on Vancouver Island: rain and wind, fog at night and in early morning.

Photo taken on the traditional and unceded territory of the K'ómoks First Nation, near Kelsey Bay.

#FungiFriday - Found this beauty during my Fall Colours on Vancouver Island photo workshop earlier this month. I took my guests to a trail that I call ''Mushroom Alley''. You can't walk 2 metres without spotting mushrooms of all sizes, shapes and colours.

I love hiking in the autumn, so much green comes back after a dry summer. The water was too low to catch the salmon spawning, though. Even in beauty the horrors persist.

Today I sorted hundreds of photos taken in the past 2 months of black bears during the salmon run, which is not over yet by the way. So this is kind of a warning that I am going to post a lot of bear photos in the coming days... 😁

I really like this one.

Photo recently taken of a small plant that managed to grow on a mossy rock surrounded by rushing water in the Big Qualicum River. Proof that life can thrive in challenging environment... in case you needed some encouragement today. 💚

Book a photo tour with me on Vancouver Island by December 31 and save CAD 100. Not only you will experience unique photo opportunities but you also support a small business during the shoulder season and I'd be super grateful for that.

If you're not convinced, here are five reasons to book a tour this fall and winter: catherinebabault.com/blog/2025…

On a recent photo tour, we had a surprise visit from a sea otter that decided to get its dinner in front of our cameras in a sheltered cove. It grabbed several crabs and clams and used tools to open the clams. We could hear it crush the shells with its teeth.

I plan to go back there as soon as I can.

Everything comes to an end eventually. I've run out of good hermit photos, so I'm pausing the Daily Hermit posts for now. (Just in time for Arachtober.) Here's a GrainyHand, deciding whether it's safe to come out of the shell. He's halfway there; GrainyHands, feeling threatened, retreat deep inside, out of sight. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit

Bears are in hyperphagia at the moment. This one ate three salmon in a row.

Photo taken with a telephoto lens and cropped in post-processing.

Belted kingfishers are notoriously difficult to photograph. We were lucky enough to witness three of them chasing each other in circles. They were very vocal during their acrobatics.
I interpreted that behaviour as two young kingfishers harassing their parent for food. They were at that stage when they have fledged and are learning to forage for themselves.

When Mama bear is done with nursing her cub and the cub is not happy about it.
No worries, it was a brief argument and nothing bad happened. She just had enough.

We interrupt your regular program for this important announcement: I've finally managed to photograph a Pacific chorus frog aka Pacific tree frog (Pseudacris Hyla regilla). It was hiding in a large patch of salal, which by the way produce delicious berries full of antioxidant.

This young Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) seemed very proud of its find. It hoped around us and looked at us with the rusty leaf in its beak as if it were saying: ''Look what I've found!''

I recently had the privilege to witness a black bear nursing her cub in the wild on Vancouver Island. She knew that I was there but because I kept a safe and respectful distance from them, she felt comfortable to feed her cub.

Note that I used a telephoto lens and the photo is cropped.

Respect wildlife, keep a safe distance!

A sunlit path through the 100-year forest.
The North Georgia Plain was once a “loggers paradise.“ Large swaths of even-aged Douglas Fir stood where a large wildfire had raged in the 1600s. By 1940, the larger portion of this “paradise” was felled, yarded, boomed, and towed to mills on the Fraser River. Cleared of stumps and slash that paradise made way for farms. Wherever the forest returned, it was being cut a second time once it reached 50+ years. Only in small corners, or in strips along creeks or at the edge of farm fields, and the rare park, is the 100-year forest becoming itself.
These trees lie in one of those farm strips. A small salmon-bearing creek runs through it. A local elementary school created this trail. In the later fall, when the summer drought is washed away by the rains, teachers bring their classes here. They might learn how the forest and the salmon nourish each other.
