Context for new followers: I took this photo in September during the salmon run on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This bear was keeping an eye on salmon going up a stream, hoping to catch a few of them. As you can judge from its body shape, it is very successful. 😁

Note that I do not approach bears, I use a telephoto lens. I practice ethical photography.

On a recent photo tour, we had a surprise visit from a sea otter that decided to get its dinner in front of our cameras in a sheltered cove. It grabbed several crabs and clams and used tools to open the clams. We could hear it crush the shells with its teeth.

I plan to go back there as soon as I can.

A hermit crab in the palm of my hand; a little over the width of one finger. He's in a bluish shell, opening upward; he's holding both chelipeds in the opening and there's also one leg visible, up against the edge. The rest is hidden. GrainyHand hermits choose shells into which they can retreat completely, showing no sign of occupancy, so this one is already feeling more confident. The chelipeds are brown, with closely-packed pale blue raised dots. On the outside of the shell, on the left, there's a limpet.

Belted kingfishers are notoriously difficult to photograph. We were lucky enough to witness three of them chasing each other in circles. They were very vocal during their acrobatics.
I interpreted that behaviour as two young kingfishers harassing their parent for food. They were at that stage when they have fledged and are learning to forage for themselves.

Text of the sign: The Elk River Valley provides a good variety of habitats for the Roosevelt elk. Clearings such as the river flats and hydro lines are rich in the small trees, shrubs, ferns and grasses that make up the majority of their diet. The nearby forest provides shelter from predators and severe winter storms. The resident elk herd is made up mostly of females, yearlings and calves. The adult males come down from their summer range in the high mountain passes in time for the fall rut. Look For These Elk Signs: 1. Tracks and scat (droppings) are clear evidence that elk have been here. 2. Many shrubs growing here have signs of elk browse. They appear misshapen, with many short branches.

I recently had the privilege to witness a black bear nursing her cub in the wild on Vancouver Island. She knew that I was there but because I kept a safe and respectful distance from them, she felt comfortable to feed her cub.

Note that I used a telephoto lens and the photo is cropped.

A view of a rustic road, curving off to the left; two stony ruts and weeds in the centre. It comes out from under the shade of overhead branches into full sunlight. Shrubs at both sides of the road out there are bright yellow, bearing brown, dried flower heads gone to seed. Beyond the shrubs (hardhack) is a pond; this end is in deep shade, and the marsh horsetail growing in the water is vivid green. Overhead branches are red alder and cedar. On the far side of the pond, the forest resumes, but there's light beyond.

A sunlit path through the 100-year forest.
The North Georgia Plain was once a “loggers paradise.“ Large swaths of even-aged Douglas Fir stood where a large wildfire had raged in the 1600s. By 1940, the larger portion of this “paradise” was felled, yarded, boomed, and towed to mills on the Fraser River. Cleared of stumps and slash that paradise made way for farms. Wherever the forest returned, it was being cut a second time once it reached 50+ years. Only in small corners, or in strips along creeks or at the edge of farm fields, and the rare park, is the 100-year forest becoming itself.
These trees lie in one of those farm strips. A small salmon-bearing creek runs through it. A local elementary school created this trail. In the later fall, when the summer drought is washed away by the rains, teachers bring their classes here. They might learn how the forest and the salmon nourish each other.

A tree, long "dead", dried out, fallen down a hill leaving its roots in the air, grows a new crop of greenery; moss coats the top, bright green in the sunlight. The part of the root we see looks sort of like a face, looking upward to the left, eye half closed, mouth open, calling to its mates. (Or singing a summer song?) Background; shady evergreen forest, tall standing trunks.

Green on green; near the stem end of a big leaf, a small, green tree frog rests. He's almost all green, with a brown stripe from his mouth, past the eye, back to his shoulder. And he has long, brown toes. His eye is yellow. The tree is a red-osier dogwood, Cornus sericea; it has red stems. The leaves are long, up to 10 cm., like this one. Veins run from the main centre vein, curving out, then inward toward the tip; between them, the leaf billows out, making long, gathered cushions.

Green on green; near the stem end of a big leaf, a small, green tree frog rests. He's almost all green, with a brown stripe from his mouth, past the eye, back to his shoulder. And he has long, brown toes. His eye is yellow. The tree is a red-osier dogwood, Cornus sericea; it has red stems. The leaves are long, up to 10 cm., like this one. Veins run from the main centre vein, curving out, then inward toward the tip; between them, the leaf billows out, making long, gathered cushions.

A black fly with orange patches on the upper end of the wings, and a very hairy butt. It's facing away from us, but some of its yellow face is visible. The flowers are pearly everlastings; white with yellow centres, growing on pale green stalks, several to each main stem. The many, layered, sharp-pointed white bracts make up the bulk of the inflorescence; the disc florets in the centre are yellow. Background; the greens and browns of a mixed forest.
