#Linux is the red pill.

You wake up. You see how deep the #RabbitHole goes.

At first, it is terrifying. The #terminal stares at you like Darth Vader asking if you know the power of the #CommandLine. You type one wrong character and feel like you accidentally launched nuclear missiles.

But then something changes. You realize your #computer actually belongs to you.

No ads in the Start Menu. No #AI assistant spying harder than a reality TV producer.

No mysterious background process eating half your #RAM like Pac-Man after three energy drinks.

You choose what gets installed. You choose when #updates happen. You choose what your #desktop looks like.

You are Neo.

Windows #users are still sitting in their pods, downloading the latest mandatory #update called KB-Whatever-Again, wondering why their printer suddenly speaks ancient Sumerian.

Linux is not perfect. Sometimes Wi-Fi drivers behave like a side quest in Dark Souls.

Sometimes you spend two hours fixing a problem just to feel smarter than everyone else.

But that is the point. The red pill was never about comfort. It was about #freedom.

And freedom means occasionally reading a forum post written by a Finnish guy in 2007 who solved your #problem and vanished forever like a #Jedi master.

Dieser #Aprilscherz über #Linux geistert schon seit Jahren durch das Netz und abgesehen von einigen Lachern offenbart er eine tiefere #Wahrheit über den #Fehler in unserem #System und der #Gesellschaft D:

Es ist mal tatsächlich der Quellcode von Windows geleacked worden damals und sofort haben sich alle sorgen gemacht über Exploits. Es gab dann auch einige auf peinliche Fehler in der Grafikverarbeitung. Siehe: heise.de/news/Windows-Luecke-n…

Windows ist also nur sicher wenn der Quellcode geheim bleibt. Microsoft arbeitet rein kapitalistisch und den Quellcode nach Fehlern zu überprüfen kostet Geld. Deswegen ist das immer eine wirtschaftliche Abwägung und dass Software niemals fehlerfrei ist und man da nichts machen kann, hat uns Microsoft alle mehr oder minder schmerzhaft beigebracht. Wer hat noch nie Daten verloren weil Microsoft-Office unerwartet abgestürzt ist?

Anders ist es beim Linux-Kernel. Er ist sicher obwohl der Quellcode öffentlich ist. Tausende Entwickler weltweit überprüfen unentgeltlich den Quellcode, finden Fehler und beheben diese. Selbst als man bei Linux eine Hintertür einschmuggeln wollte, wurde diese gefunden weil der Quellcode sichtbar und überprüfbar war. Ohne den Quellcode hätte man niemals die Komponente mit der Hintertür ermitteln können und wäre wahrscheinlich von einem normalen Fehler ausgegangen, der schon irgendwann behoben wird. Wie immer bei der proprietären Softwareentwicklung, wo man nur hoffen kann, dass sich jemand darum kümmert und der Bug nicht zum Feature erklärt wird.

Kapitalismus liefert zwar manchmal aber er kann uns niemals das Beste liefern, weil die Profitgier dies diametral verhindert.

Warum immer mehr Menschen auf Linux umsteigen und deswegen am 22. März auf dem Campus Steilshoop eine Linux-Installations-Party stattfindet. 🐧

Seit den Enthüllungen von Edward #Snowden wissen wir: Unsere digitalen Spuren sind wertvoll. Viele große Unternehmen sammeln Informationen – oft mehr, als uns bewusst ist. Spätestens seitdem stellen sich immer mehr Menschen eine Frage: Wer kontrolliert eigentlich meinen #Computer? Werden wir zu gläsernen Bürgern ohne #Privatsphäre für mächtige globale Konzerne oder Schlimmeres?

Jetzt stelle man sich vor, keine nervigen Zwangs-Updates. Keine #KI mit nahmen #Copilot, die einen ausspioniert und überwacht. Zusätzlich zu den ohnehin erhobenen Telemetriedaten, was nur ein anderer Name für Massenüberwachung ist. Keine versteckten Abo-Gebühren oder andere Kosten. Kling zu schön, um wahr zu sein aber genau darum geht es bei Linux. Gewinne die Kontrolle zurück über den eigenen Computer. Sperre unsichtbare Datensammler aus mit Linux.

Linux ist ein Betriebssystem. So wie Microsoft Windows oder macOS. Nur Linux kann sich keine große Reklame leisten und ist deswegen nicht so bekannt. Ein Betriebssystem ist das Grundprogramm des Computers. Es sorgt dafür, dass Programme laufen, Dateien gespeichert und der Bildschirm etwas anzeigt. Linux ist aber anders, da es das größte nicht kommerzielle Gemeinschaftsprojekt der Welt ist. Es ist frei und kostenlos. Jeder darf es nutzen. Jeder darf es verändern. Das klingt unspektakulär. Ist es aber nicht.

Jetzt gerade ist Linux in aller Munde weil im Oktober 2025 Microsoft das Ende von Windows 10 bekannt gegeben hat. Strengere Hardware-Anforderungen von Windows 11 haben sehr viele Computer unbrauchbar gemacht. Dies sind rein kommerzielle Anforderungen, die den Profit von Microsoft steigern sollen auf Kosten der Allgemeinheit und der Umwelt. Der Planet bezahlt für die schillernde neue Taskleiste von Windows 11. Das Ende von Windows 10 muss aber nicht das Ende des eigenen alten Computers bedeuten.

Linux muss keinen Profit erwirtschaften. Es ist der Allgemeinheit und keinen amerikanischen Konzernzielen verpflichtet. Darüber hinaus läuft es erstaunlich flott auf alten Computern. Linux bietet daher eine Alternative. Ohne Konto-Zwang. Ohne eingebaute Werbung. Ohne versteckte Datensammlung und das Ganze auch noch kostenlos. Vorurteile aus vergangene Zeiten gegen Linux sind längst ausgeräumt. Viele Aufgaben sind genauso einfach wie bei Windows oder Mac. E-Mails schreiben. Surfen. Online-Banking. Fotos verwalten. Filme streamen. Alles kein Problem. Linux ist aber längst kein reines Büro-System mehr. Es ist sogar mitten in der Computer-Spiele-Welt angekommen. Linux ist somit ein Statement für Freiheit, Privatsphäre, Umwelt, Nachhaltigkeit, Kontrolle und gegen den Zwang mächtiger globaler Konzerne. Nur durch einen Wechsel auf Linux kann diesen Konzernen die Macht entzogen werden und diese somit zum Umdenken. Digitaler Widerstand kann mit einem Klick beginnen. Dein Computer, deine Regeln, deine Interessen sollten im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Welches Linux man als Neueinsteigender wählen sollte:

Linux ist streng genommen nur der Kernel, der Kern des Betriebssystems. Damit daraus ein Betriebssystem wird braucht es noch eine reihe weiterer Programme und das Ganze nennt sich dann Distribution. Die Distributionen heißen Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Manjaro, usw.

• Wer einen aktuellen Rechner hat und nur Surfen, Textverarbeitung und Filme schauen möchte ist am besten aufgehoben bei: Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), Ubuntu, Fedora und macOS-Umsteiger fühlen sich bei Elementary-Linux zu Hause.
• Bei Rechnern die älter als 10 Jahre sind eignen sich je nach Hardware: FunOS, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, MX-Linux und Puppy-Linux
• Selbst sehr alte Rechner kann man noch nutzen mit: antiX, Slitaz oder Tiny Core
• Gamer bevorzugen für ihre Computerspiele: CachyOS, Nobara oder Bazzite

Linux ist längst im Alltag angekommen. Es läuft auf Millionen Rechnern. Auf Servern. Auf Supercomputern. Sogar auf vielen Smartphones. Warum nicht auch bei dir? Warum also nicht ausprobieren?

Genau hierfür hat sich „End of 10“ (Ende von Windows 10) gegründet. Ein Zusammenschluss aus ehrenamtlichen Computer-Intressierten, die gerne bei der Installation von Linux unterstützen. Sie treffen sich das nächste mal am 22. März ab 15 Uhr bei der #AGDAZ auf dem Campus Steilshoop. Jeder kann seinen #Laptop mitbringen. Allerdings wird um eine Vorherige Sicherung der Daten gebeten. Wer sich nur informieren möchte bekommt einen USB-Stick mit Linux gratis (solange Vorrat reicht). Damit kann man zu Hause Linux selber ausprobieren und ganz leicht installieren. Alle sind willkommen und man muss kein Computer-Experte sein für Linux. Wer sich mit Linux schon auskennt ist ebenfalls herzlich eingeladen für einen Austausch und eventuelle mithilfe.

Linux ist keine radikale Abkehr. Es ist eine Einladung. Eine Einladung, Technik bewusster zu nutzen. Mehr Kontrolle zu haben. Und vielleicht ein kleines Stück digitale Selbstbestimmung zurückzugewinnen.

As we establish our co-op, we bring with us our philosophy of technology. Our approach is based upon principles of privacy and sustainability.

The best way to show off our style in the early days of our co-op is to generate a hypothetical scenario (based on upon experiences with clients).

In the future, we’ll hopefully have permission to illustrate actual client makeovers so we can take some nice photos of their setups. Early days!

Hypothetical client

Jamie, 57 is a unionised postie for Royal Mail who hates how our lives have become dominated by U.S. tech corporations.

They own an ancient Android phone that isn’t supported with security updates any more (and has a slightly cracked screen) which they mostly use to stay in touch with friends and family via Signal messenger.

They also have an old slow Windows 10 (also no longer supported) laptop with a terrible keyboard and a dead battery that they use around the house for surfing the web, writing emails and internet. Jamie dreads taking the laptop to union meetings because it weighs a ton and shuts down if the power cable is accidentally unplugged.

Jamie also has a huge TV running Android that has a bunch of crapware and annoying ads on it. YouTube videos play with ads every few minutes and there isn’t an app for ITVX installed, which is where some international football matches are streamed. Jamie finds typing into search bars using their TV remote incredibly frustrating.

Jamie has saved up some money to overhaul their tech but doesn’t know where to start so reaches out to Tech Care Co-op for help and we communicated via Signal voice message to discover what Jamie’s needs were.

Laptop

We recommend using second hand business grade laptops. They tend to be cheap, robust and easy to repair.

Generally our preferred brand is Lenovo Thinkpad. They can be expensive when new but rapidly drop into the sub £400 price range after new models are released and circulated into corporate usage.

With a laptop, it’s best to go light and small. As soon as you have to carry it via backup, you will regret getting that chunky laptop. For Jamie, we would chose a Thinkpad X1 Carbon.

Our preferred Operating System is Linux which is open source meaning it can be audited to make sure it doesn’t have any components that are harmful to our privacy. It can be installed on a wide range of hardware and often costs nothing to buy (though many open source projects invite donations).

Though we are happy to support any variety of Linux, we are currently enjoying Project Bluefin (based upon Fedora) as it self updating and easy to maintain.

We take care of sourcing the laptop for you, installing Bluefin and the applications that meet your needs and migrating your old data.

Mobile phone

Our preferred mobile operating system is Graphene OS which is an Android based alterative.

What we like about Graphene OS is that it has a ton of great privacy features that work behind the scenes to keep you safe but works just as well as normal Android.

For example, although Graphene OS doesn’t come with the Google Play Store (perfect for avoiding big tech), it is easily installed with one click. We also recommend the F-Droid app store for the best privacy preserving apps.

Graphene OS at time of writing is only available for the Pixel smartphones. The newest Pixels at time of writing are supported for security updates for 5 years which is great for a phone.

We would take care of sourcing a device for you and install Graphene OS.

TV

We love to re-use old hardware. It’s exponentially more sustainable that buying new electronics. We also hate invasive ads and tracking.

We recommend replacing the hard drive in old computers with a new Solid State Drive (SSD), which in this case, we also would install Bluefin Linux onto.

We would then stash the old laptop behind Jamie’s large TV in their lounge, connected to the TV via HMDI.

We would then install the KDEconnect app on Jamie’s phone to easily control the old laptop using it’s virtual touchpad, keyboard and media controls over WiFi.

We also added the uBlockOrigin extension to Firefox web browser on the laptop to block YouTube ads. Jamie can now watch iPlayer, ITV and YouTube on their TV without interferences.

Our hypothetical client, Jamie is now living the hi-tech life. All their devices are fast, user friendly and sustainably sourced.

They are protected from tracking, ads and have a setup that will last at least five years for less than the cost of an decent new laptop.

Jamie is also able to ask for extra support from us as and when they need it if they get stuck with anything. The entire project cost less than a brand new laptop or phone.
