Seen edge-on from Earth, its distinctive shape and dust lane give it its appetizing nickname. This distant spiral reaches its annual culmination at astronomical midnight in early March, making it a prime target for northern hemisphere observers during spring evenings.

Five clear nights during an unusually long stretch of good weather yielded my deepest and highest-quality image of Messier 101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, to date. Three sessions used the UHC filter on the RGB sensor, with two more marking the first light of my new ultra-narrowband H-alpha filter.

A frosty path to a rising moon and a miky way
🇬🇧 My plan to photograph the rising comet C/2025 R3 in the early morning was thwarted by heavy fog in the east. Instead, I looked south and found the rising moon between the trees.
🇩🇪 Eigentlich wollte ich ja den aufgehenden Kometen C/2025 R3 fotografieren, aber dichter Nebel zog im Osten auf, sodass ich nicht einmal mehr die Sterne gesehen habe. Im Süden ging derweil der Mond auf, sodass ich meine Pläne über Bord warf und ihn zwischen den Bäumen in Verbindung mit der Milchstraße fotografierte.

Eine nächtliche Szene am Thunersee, aufgenommen von Hilterfingen aus, zeigt die beleuchtete Uferlinie und die dahinterliegenden Berner Alpen. Der Sternenhimmel spannt sich über die markanten Gipfel von Niesen und Stockhorn, deren Spitzen leicht beleuchtet sind, während eine scheinbar leuchtende Boje im Vordergrund das ruhige Wasser akzentuiert. Standing outside at #night watching the night #sky as one does, I heard #geese flying overhead. They were actually incredibly illuminated by the town’s light. I scamper inside the house and grab my camera and tripod. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get sharp captures of them because of the low light conditions but that wasn’t my goal. I wanted their formation blurred across a somewhat crisp night sky. These geese are making their migratory journey hundreds of miles north to their breeding grounds.
An allegory of the fast paced #life we live under a somewhat slow moving, almost stationary portrait of the rest of the cosmos. Sometimes we need to rest and just wonder.
I included multiple shots and edit styles I was toying with. #Pleiades (the seven sisters) can be seen on the top of the picture. The green streak is a satellite.

While in Arizona, we wanted to take advantage of the Dark Sky certified areas for night photography. I've never tried this before, but I had so much fun and want to learn more. In this first attempt, it appears that I captured a galaxy. Any expert night photographers that can confirm? It's half way down from the top, closer to the right side.
