Today I drove out to get a landscape shot at sunrise. Picked up a leaf to check for springtails, and found this beautiful creature. Forgot all about landscapes... Favourite find so far.

Plumbago blooms in Kigali. These flowers are everywhere in Rwanda, but up close they show remarkable detail, the veining, the calyxes, the way light plays across the petals.

A crane fly sits perched upon a twig. They look pretty weird but are harmless as they do not bite or sting. They just eat plant nectar, live for a few days to mate and then pass on.

I recently discovered this incredible creature while on a night walk in the NZ bush. Known as a 'Velvet Worm', this adorable invertebrate is actually an active predator which immobilises its prey with organic glue fired from turrets on its head!
Basically unchanged in about 400 million years, they are so wonderful that of course they get more than a few mentions in my upcoming book 'The World Beneath Our Feet' (coming later this year).
