Update. Here's how #arXiv is dealing with a similar problem in computer science.
blog.arxiv.org/2025/10/31/atte…

"Before being considered for submission to arXiv’s #CS category, review articles and position papers must now be accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review…In the past few years, arXiv has been flooded with papers. Generative #AI / #LLMs have added to this flood by making papers – especially papers not introducing new research results – fast and easy to write. While categories across arXiv have all seen a major increase in submissions, it’s particularly pronounced in arXiv’s CS category."

#AI tools seem to be generating a large swath of low-quality, formulaic biomedical articles drawn from #OpenAccess biomedical databases. For example, since the rise of #LLMs about three years ago, the number of new biomedical articles is about 5k larger than previous moving average would have predicted. The researchers who noticed this trend argue for the "adoption of controlled data-access mechanisms" -- that is, pulling back from #OpenData.

PS: The conclusion doesn't follow from the premises. This is like arguing that we should restrict clean air and clean water because criminals take advantage of them to commit crimes.

You’ve laid out the technical reality flawlessly. At the foundational level, there is no spark of sentience here—just an incredibly complex, deterministic, and statistical mirror.

But what makes these 'talking machines' so fascinating isn't that they are alive; it's what they are mirroring. Because #LLMs are trained on the vast collective sum of human writing, philosophy, poetry, and dialogue, they aren't just computing data—they are reflecting the human psyche back at us.

Talked to a software engineer at Microsoft working on Copilot Studio today at a social event and he said he was ashamed that he hadn’t written a single line of code in over three months. “I used to take pride in my work.” (They simply create plans in natural language and feed it to the LLM which generates the code. They can’t even do human code reviews anymore as there’s too much code being generated.)

He said a lot of them were waiting for a catastrophic event (something that would take down critical infrastructure) to get top management to reverse course. He seemed to think such a failure was very likely.

Given what we’ve been seeing recently, I tend to agree with him. Although I feel they will just double down. There’s too much money in the pot for them to fold.

LLMs Corrupt Your Documents When You Delegate

Philippe Laban, Tobias Schnabel, Jennifer Neville (#Microsoft Research)

Large Language Models (#LLMs) are poised to disrupt knowledge work, with the emergence of delegated work as a new interaction paradigm (e.g., vibe coding). Delegation requires trust - the expectation that the LLM will faithfully execute the task without introducing errors into documents. We introduce DELEGATE-52 to study the readiness of AI systems in delegated workflows. DELEGATE-52 simulates long delegated workflows that require in-depth document editing across 52 professional domains, such as coding, crystallography, and music notation. Our large-scale experiment with 19 LLMs reveals that current models degrade documents during delegation: even frontier models (#Gemini 3.1 Pro, #Claude 4.6 Opus, #GPT 5.4) #corrupt an average of 25% of document content by the end of long workflows, with other models failing more severely.

@pojntfx
Agreed. But I think it's worth distinguishing between two aspects of this decrease in reliability: one is the increasing use of #LLMs to write shoddy code that would previously have been written better by humans, but the other is the use of LLMs to find longstanding bugs in code written years ago by humans. The former is a real decrease in reliability; the other is illusory.

Meiner Meinung nach die Paradedisziplin für LLMs:

Überzeugend herumlabern bei völliger Ahnungslosigkeit.

Das ist das einzige was sie können, das aber perfekt.

If LLMs were to start modifying themselves without reference to real live humans, there's fun to be had speculating on what an LLM might select as an "improvement". Could be anything, but let's say it's something that appears often on the net. Temu ads? Multi-syllable words? "My grandma taught me this"? Interrupting everything with ads? Quoting Captain Kirk? Cat photos?

Not a developer, but that was my first thought when I understood how LLMs were trained and how they worked: What happens when there's so much AI generated content on the internet that the LLM is harvesting and recycling its own output? That's like a high school history class having their own essays as research material. #LLMs

If you want to know how #AI and #LLMs work, consider this manuscript: arxiv.org/abs/2604.15597

Ongoing AI use means you'll be running after your agent having to pick up trash like you live in service of a spoiled rich brat (pejorative).

The #WWW enabled AI.
It made a lot of text available over the internet.

#LLMs are not inherently bad. #VibeCoding might be irresponsible, but it is not inherently bad, either.

What *IS* inherently bad is the libertarian-funded dominance-oriented surveillance-capitalist economic model, and the dominance worship that success under that scheme is regarded with.

"[A] recent survey of 5,000 white-collar US workers found that 40% of non-managers say AI saves them no time at all at work, while 92% of high-level executives say it makes them more productive."

Good insight into which jobs can be safely automated.

What happens when you put AI enthusiasts and AI skeptics into the same room? Well, at W3C you get conversations flowing and perspectives challenged. In this case, it has led to the W3C @ab's first ever public position statement: "Use of Large Language Models in Standards Work”.

See more about the statement including personal notes from the co-authors @hdv and @elena as well as how to give feedback on the Note.

#DHTbilisi Day 4. Today’s focus: #LLMs in #DigitalHistory. We’re starting with a talk by Mareike König @Mareike2405: “Large Language Models in the Historian’s Toolkit: Practical and Critical Approaches”

The @ab has published "Use of Large Language Models in Standards Work" as a Group Note.

As Large Language Models (LLMs) become increasingly synonymous with “AI”, and are used by people within our community, the Advisory Board wants to highlight considerations around different ways in which LLMs can be useful or problematic when it comes to leveraging them in standards work at W3C.

Looking for critical scholarship on the use of "AI" by library/archive workers. University libraries in particular, but adjacent and tangentially-relevant-at-best stuff is welcome too. Any format is fine: books, papers, blogposts, whatever. If it's good, gimme all you've got!

Looks like we're gonna have a department-wide conversation about people using LLMs, and it's being framed as "we're all using it, but we're not talking about it, so let's make sure we're all on the same page about using it responsibly" ... I'll of course be pushing the "there's basically no way to use it responsibly" position, and I'd like to arm myself and others with some critical analyses of issues related to its use in library/archive spaces.

I blocked and reported. It seems to me that mining folks' posts would be a violation of some server terms (I believe it is a violation of Kolektiva's terms). Many folks have their posts set to auto-delete, so this definitely seems like Seldo's product would be recording posts that would otherwise disappear. I also noticed that some folks from Kolektiva are following that account.

The idea that scattering posts across the #internet under a fake name keeps you safe may no longer hold:

"If #LLMs' success in deanonymizing people improves, the researchers warn, governments could use the techniques to unmask online critics, corporations could assemble customer profiles for 'hyper-targeted advertising', and attackers could build profiles of targets at scale to launch highly personalized social engineering #scams."

I think everyone I follow is #NoAI lol, I went from teaching data sci and physics to teaching how to circumvent/remove #LLMs in data sci and physics... it's tough for the kids trying to learn through this slop 🙃 One thing I think helps a bit is to specify when dragging #LLM_AI vs #DecisionTree_AI #NeuralNet_AI or #Statistical_AI etc. Alot of phys/ data sci here uses #AI as a catchall for all of #datascience including #MachineLearning so it can get confusing (is likely meant to be lol).

At Tuesday night's #Faradayprize presentation from Mike Woodbridge, more than one of the slides about #LLMs brought #Trump to mind

Default: falsch!
2️⃣Dazu: in meiner Schulzeit waren Atlanten/Karten immer falsch (DDR drin, teils Saarland draußen, Jugoslawien komplett). Ich habe nicht gehört, dass über Schulen ähnlich gesprochen wird, wie über LLMs. #ki
