Eye contact is whenever there is at least one eye anywhere in the image. No matter where it is. No matter how small the eye and how big the image is.

Ask autistic people, and they'll likely confirm. And they'll also likely confirm that it triggers them.

In fact, eye contact is even when you, as a neurotypical person, cannot even see the eye because it's less then a pixel.

Imagine an image of 20 megapixels. Now imagine there's a person somewhere in the image, only four pixels high and about one pixel wide. This means the head is half a pixel high and a third of a pixel wide.

Even if the person is looking directly at the camera, this still means that each individual eye is 1/15 of a pixel wide and maybe 1/30 of a pixel high. That's 1/450 or a bit over 0.2% of a pixel. That's about 1/9,000,000,000 or a bit over 0.000,000,01% of the whole image. If the person is looking directly at the camera.

Nonetheless, this may trigger some autistic people even if the person is not even looking into the general direction of the camera.

It doesn't even have to be a person. It may just as well be an animal or a fantasy creature or a robot or a sculpture or a stylised face or even only a single stylised eye.

I've actually had all this confirmed by @Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한🦣 who knows enough actually diagnosed autistic people to know.

So it doesn't matter how big or infinitely small the eye is. It doesn't matter where it's looking. If there's at least one eye in your image, it counts as eye contact.

If you, as the user who posts the image, know for certain that there is at least one eye in the image, you're obliged to

• have the image automatically blanked or blurred
• make sure that Mastodon will blank the image, too
• add the content warning "CW: eye contact" to your post
• add the hashtags #EyeContact and #CWEyeContact to your post, especially the former which some people out there may have filtered

You're only excused not to do so if you yourself honestly don't know that there is at least one eye in the image.

Abandonar las redes sociales privativas es el primer paso, pero no el más difícil. El verdadero reto comienza cuando cruzamos la frontera hacia Mastodon, Pixelfed o PeerTube, etc. Muchos huyen de los algoritmos que premian el odio y del sesgo que silencia la diferencia, buscando un aire más limpio en las redes federadas. Sin embargo, la descentralización no nos hace mágicamente mejores personas. Si traemos con nosotros la intolerancia, el juicio rápido y la incapacidad de escuchar al que piensa distinto o tiene otras preferencias, tradiciones o identidad de género, solo estaremos construyendo una jaula nueva con materiales más bonitos.

La libertad del Fediverso conlleva la responsabilidad de la convivencia. Ser inclusivos y practicar la aceptación no es un eslogan de marketing aquí, porque no hay una corporación que nos obligue a "portarnos bien". Es una decisión ética individual. Los X-Men no son solo una fantasía de ciencia ficción; son la metáfora más potente que el noveno arte ha creado sobre la discriminación. Desde su origen, los mutantes han representado a "el otro": aquel que es perseguido no por lo que hace, sino por lo que es. El miedo que inspiran en la población civil y la creación de los Centinelas —máquinas diseñadas para el exterminio sistemático— no son muy diferentes de las purgas raciales o la persecución histórica de las comunidades LGBTQ+. Es la institucionalización del odio hacia lo que no encaja en la norma, disfrazada de "seguridad nacional".

Dentro de este universo, las posturas ante el rechazo son dolorosamente reales. Por un lado, tenemos el idealismo de Charles Xavier, que busca la integración y la tolerancia, una visión que recuerda a los movimientos de derechos civiles que apuestan por la educación y la coexistencia. Por otro, está Magneto, un sobreviviente del Holocausto que entiende que el miedo humano suele terminar en genocidio y decide que la mejor defensa es el ataque. Los X-Men nos enseñan que ser diferente tiene un costo y que la verdadera lucha no es contra los poderes de otros, sino contra el sistema que nos obliga a esconder nuestra verdadera identidad para poder sobrevivir.

Sit-rep (never said that before but felt right).
Sat on a much delayed but not cancelled train, heading back towards London from Birmingham having attended 'Business Without Barriers' (free huge event about inclusive businesses and experiences) at the NEC (giant exhibition centre).
Whilst I am now feeling tired, have a migraine, and the London underground in my near future, I am also happy.
Every coloured hair I have ever seen was on show.
Wheelchairs (of every colour and customisation) had right of way, and were everywhere (including 2 having an amazing drag race on the way from the station)
Sunflower Lanyards everywhere.
People, so often hiding, proudly being themselves in the light, with scarred arms and mental bruises all on show.
I feel privaleged to have had todays experience, and seen empowered people coming together to celebrate and network without stigma.
Highly recommend.
My favorite quote from a speaker:
"Never forget the value you bring to your job, family and friends. That comes from your lived experience. Your lived experience has a value, and others are better for learning from it"

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out to the #Mastodon community for some advice and support. Here in South Africa, many blind individuals, including myself, face a significant barrier in the job market. Despite having the right qualifications and experience, many companies still hesitate to trust our capabilities. It's frustrating to see that a lot of companies still believe blind people can't use computers, even though we have tools like JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver at our disposal.

The most amazing thing is that even if you have the experience and qualifications to prove that you indeed qualify to work at this job or even at the company, they don’t care. The only thing they care about is the amount of sight you have at your disposal.

For example.
I have been contracted at the South African Broadcasting Corporation, our national public broadcaster (similar to the BBC in the UK or NBC in the United States). Although my contract officially ends at the end of March this year, I was told to stop working in May last year because they said there was “no further work” I could do. Recently, I received a letter confirming that my contract is now ending. Last year, when I returned to Cape Town due to my mother’s illness, I applied for a call centre position just to sustain myself. I passed the assessment test, but I was not hired because they said they did not have tools to accommodate me — even though I brought my own USB with NVDA to use as my screen reader. The real issue was not tools. It was trust.

The worst part of it all is that many blind people begin to believe the problem is their qualifications. So what do they do? They go back to school and complete another degree in a different field, thinking it will improve their chances of getting hired more quickly—only to face the very same barrier again. I know someone who holds four different degrees in completely separate fields, including Marketing, HR, and Social Science, just to name a few. Yet he is still unemployed.

So tell me, What can one do in situations like this, where qualifications, experience, and solutions are not enough because employers simply do not trust blind professionals?

This account, this corner of the fediverse, has become one of the places I let those questions be noisy in public. What does healing mean when the conditions that harmed you are not gone, only rearranged into more respectable shapes? What actually happens inside a counselling relationship when disability or neurodivergence is present but unnamed, or misnamed, or politely ignored? How do we begin to notice the ways power and unspoken norms travel through even the most well-intentioned helping professions? How do we hold culture as something we are constantly creating and being created by, something we may need to grieve and interrogate and occasionally celebrate, often all at once, sometimes in the space of a single conversation?

I keep circling back to the interior labour of this work. The slow, repetitive practice of building emotional regulation when your nervous system's default setting is red alert. The awkwardness of learning self-compassion when sharp self-criticism has been your most reliable survival tool. The moments that feel like failure because you find yourself reacting in an old way, when in reality this is precisely how recovery moves, looping back on itself, revisiting old ground with slightly different eyes. The way trauma and joy can sit shoulder to shoulder in the same hour, the same therapy session, the same breath, and how unnerving and holy that can feel.

Rauch and Ansari suggest that silence can be deliberate and strategic, a form of self-regulation rather than withdrawal, a boundary rather than an absence. I think about this in relation to the freeze response, to the moments in my own history when going quiet was not giving up but holding on. The body stills because there are no safe words yet. Sometimes the silence is the story. And learning to hear it as such, to receive it without rushing to fill or fix it, is one of the things I am still practising, in music and in therapy and in the ordinary, unglamorous dailiness of trying to stay present in a life that sometimes arrives all at once.

I am not arriving anywhere with a finished theory of how any of this is supposed to work. I am coming, again and again, with fragments and questions and a stubborn intention to tell the truth as I understand it in the moment I am writing. That truth is often partial, often shifting. My understanding of myself, of trauma, of disability, of care, keeps moving, and I want it to. I would rather be inconsistent and alive to new information than seamless and rigidly wrong.

If you are still reading, you are already participating in something I care about. A space that treats complexity as ordinary rather than excessive. Where being too much is not an accusation but raw material. Where intense feeling and rigorous thought are both welcome at the same table. Where healing is not a linear journey toward a fixed destination but something more like learning to live inside unresolved chords without pretending they have resolved. Where music is both metaphor and method, both a way of speaking about change and a way of practising it in the body.

True silence does not exist. What we call silence is simply what we have not yet learned to hear. The fullness of life in quieter tones. The heartbeat of thought. The whispered rhythm of resilience. The steady murmur of healing is underway. And when we learn to tune into the music between the notes and into the truth held in breath, we do more than survive. We begin to sing again. This time, in a voice that is entirely our own.

I am not here to introduce myself so much as to keep turning up alongside you. To keep writing from the middle of things, not only from the rare polished moments that look good in hindsight. To keep noticing the small, ordinary, unglamorous ways humans find their way back to themselves, even inside systems that were never set up with them in mind. If any of these threads brush against something in your own story, then you are part of the imagined audience I write towards. And maybe, in a slow, imperfect, occasionally dissonant way, part of the choir that is still learning how to hear itself.

🟥Hoy, en un supermercado, una señora muy mayor me ha pedido que le marcara el número secreto de la tarjeta en el datáfono.
Había fallado dos veces porque no veía bien.
Me lo ha dicho casi en un susurro, con esa mezcla de pudor y confianza que se te queda clavada.

Hace unos días, en un cajero, otra señora mayor intentaba hacer un ingreso.
La única persona de la sucursal la había despachado con un “eso se hace en el cajero”.
Estaba intentando meter un IBAN en casillas de números.
Cuando me acerqué le di un susto involuntario y se le cayó el bastón.
Nadie más se había parado.

Cada vez veo más escenas así.
Personas que han sido autónomas toda su vida y que de pronto se sienten torpes, fuera de lugar, solo porque todo se ha vuelto digital y nadie se toma el tiempo de explicar nada.

Me pregunto por qué, en un momento en el que hablamos —y con razón— de derechos, cuidados e inclusión, estamos construyendo una sociedad tan hostil con nuestros mayores.
Como si se nos olvidara que, en nada, seremos nosotros los que pidamos ayuda a un desconocido.

Meine Teenagerzeit war in den 90ern. Ich gehöre zur Generation Walkman oder auch “Kassettenkind”. Wie für vermutlich viele Teenager war uns Musik sehr wichtig. Stundenlang haben wir mit unseren Walkmans Musik gehört. Wir haben Kassetten gekauft, Musik aus dem Radio aufgenommen und Mixtapes zusammengestellt. Musik war (und ist) Lebensqualität, Entertainment, aber auch Identität und Zugehörigkeitsgefühl. Mit Hörgeräten ist zusammen Musikhören nicht so einfach - aber es gibt Hoffnung!
