La Escalinata Jeroglífica es el monumento más asombroso del parque arqueológico de Copán en Honduras. El gobernante número 13 de la ciudad, un rey muy famoso llamado Waxaklajuun Ub'aah K'awiil (a quien muchos conocen de cariño como 18 Conejo), mandó labrar los primeros 12 escalones de esta imponente obra de arte en el año 710 d.C., a principios del siglo VIII. Esta gran escalera es considerada el texto grabado en piedra más largo de toda América y cuenta la maravillosa historia de los reyes mayas.

A finales del siglo XIX, expediciones arqueológicas financiadas por la Universidad de Harvard trabajaron en el lugar y, tras un polémico acuerdo con el gobierno de esa época, se llevaron varias piezas originales de la estructura. Entre esos tesoros se encuentra un escalón bellamente labrado y una de las grandes estatuas que adornaban la escalinata. Lamentablemente, esta pieza tan valiosa para el patrimonio cultural no está en su país de origen, sino guardada lejos de casa en los exhibidores del Museo Peabody de Arqueología y Etnología en Estados Unidos.

At least 177 people were killed last year for defending the environment, according to new figures, with a fifth of killings taking place in the Amazon #rainforest.
Murdered by organised crime groups and land invaders, environmental defenders were killed at a rate of one every other day in 2022, figures from the NGO Global Witness show. Colombia was the most deadly country, recording 60 murders.
#Indigenous communities were disproportionately represented in the figures, making up 34% of all murders, despite representing about 5% of the world’s population. The new figures mean that at least 1,910 environmental defenders have been killed between 2012 and 2022, according to Global Witness, with most of the murders going unpunished.
